This document summarizes Julia Smythe's research on writing anxiety among intermediate level college freshmen. Smythe administered a questionnaire to 35 students at a rural community college. The results showed that 66% of respondents experienced current anxiety about writing, with over half feeling most anxious during prewriting. Additionally, 54% reported not liking writing. Smythe's research explores factors that can cause writing anxiety, such as a lack of self-efficacy, understanding of the writing process, and past negative writing experiences. Understanding and addressing writing anxiety is important because it can inhibit students' academic success and career prospects.
