Introduction
 Solar energy is capturing the solar radiation and coverting
it into electricity.
 Presently solar panel is made up of Silicon or Gallium Arsenide
(GaAs) material which has low efficiency and high cost.
 So introduction of carbon nanotubes in solar panel
technology will help us to eliminate this problem.
 The electrical, machanical and thermal properties of
Carbon nanotubes “CNTs” are dependent on their
diameter .

Carbon Nanotubes
 Carbon annotubes were invented in 1991 by the japanese
electron microscopist “ SUMIO IIJIMAA ”.
 IIJIMA discovered Multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in
arc burned rods.
 1993 Bethune and Iijima independently discover Single walled
carbon nanotubes(SWCNT).

Continue.....
 Carbon nanotubes are made of carbon.
 Carbons are available in many allotropes form which depend on the
structure arrangement of carbon.
 Carbon nanotubes are fullerene-related structures which consist
of graphene cylinders closed at either end with caps containing
pentagonal rings.
 CNTs is important for nanotechnology, electronics, optics and other field
of technology.
1/28/2019 6
Why carbon nanotubes used?
 The solar filmed photovoltaic panels made of amorphous silicon
The production methods are complex, but less energy intensive
then crystalline solar panels.
 So introduction of carbon nanotubes in solarpanel technology by
using solar energy will help us to eliminate this problem.
 CNTs are used in the technology of solar panels to increase the
efficiency of the solar panel up to 80%.
1/28/2019 7
TYPES OF NANOTUBES
1) Single walled carbon nanotubes .
2) Multi walled carbon nanotubes .
1/28/2019 8
Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes
 A single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) is made from
single atomic layer thick sheet of graphite (called graphene)
rolled into a seamless cylinder.
1/28/2019 9
Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes
Continue...
 Most single walled (SWNT) have a diameter of close to 1 nanometer
with a tube length that can be many millions of times longer.
Single walled nanotubes are an important variety of carbon nanotubes
because they exhibit electric properties that are not shared by the multi
walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) variants.
1/28/2019 10
Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes
Multi walled nanotubes (MWNT) consist of multiple rolled
layers (Concentric tubes) of graphite.
1/28/2019 11
Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes
Continue.....
 The multi walled nanotubes can be described by the two
models.
1. Russian Doll model 2. Parchment model

Working of carbon solar panel
 Carbon nanotubes based solar panels
works on the principal of photovoltaic
effect.
PHOTOVOLTAIC EFFECT: process in
which two dissimilar materials in close
contact produce an electrical voltage when
struck by light or other radiant energy.
1/28/2019 13
Performance of CNTs
 The V-I characteristics shows the linear variation of the output
produced in the process of conversion of the light energy
into electrical energy.
1/28/2019 14
Application of CNTs
 CNTs thermal conductivity.
 CNTs energy storage.
 CNTs conductive properties
 CNTs thermal materials.
 Molecular electronics based on CNTs.
1/28/2019 15
Uses of CNTs
Tubes by the ton for more efficient electrical transmission lines.
Single wall carbon nanotubes as light harvesting media.
Carbon nanotube composites in the photoactive layer.
Carbon nanotubes as a transparent electrode.
CNTs in dye-sensitized solar cells
1/28/2019 16
Advantages
 It will be increase the efficiency.
 Extremely small and lightweight.
 Making them excellent replacements for metallic wires.
 Are resistant to temperature changes, meaning they function
almost just as well in extreme cold as they do in extreme heat.
1/28/2019 17
Disadvantages
 Despite all the research, scientists still don't understand exactly how
they work.
 Extremely small, so are difficult to work with.
 Currently, the process is relatively expensive to produce the
nanotubes.
 At the rate our technology has been becoming obsolete, it may be a
gamble to bet on this technology.
1/28/2019
Conclusion
 Carbon nanotubes are the next step in miniaturizing electronic
circuits , replacing silicon transistors and diodes , which are fast
reaching the theoretical limits of size and speed of operation.
 Using CNTs, nanochips can be made with entire circuits on it. Ideal
diodes can be made from CNTs, resulting in highly efficient
electronic circuits.

  • 17. Advantages  It will be increase the efficiency.  Extremely small and lightweight.  Making them excellent replacements for metallic wires.  Are resistant to temperature changes, meaning they function almost just as well in extreme cold as they do in extreme heat. 1/28/2019 17
  • 18. Disadvantages  Despite all the research, scientists still don't understand exactly how they work.  Extremely small, so are difficult to work with.  Currently, the process is relatively expensive to produce the nanotubes.  At the rate our technology has been becoming obsolete, it may be a gamble to bet on this technology. 1/28/2019
  • 19. Conclusion  Carbon nanotubes are the next step in miniaturizing electronic circuits , replacing silicon transistors and diodes , which are fast reaching the theoretical limits of size and speed of operation.  Using CNTs, nanochips can be made with entire circuits on it. Ideal diodes can be made from CNTs, resulting in highly efficient electronic circuits. 1/28/2019 19
