1) Rizal returned to the Philippines in 1887 after 5 years abroad to operate on his mother's eyes and help his family and country.
2) While in Calamba, he opened a medical clinic and gymnasium. However, he soon received a letter summoning him to Malacanang Palace to discuss his book Noli Me Tangere.
3) Though Rizal denied accusations of subversion, the governor general banned the book due to censorship. This increased interest in the secretly read novel and attacks against it from religious groups.
