STORM OVER NOLI
- He received a letter from Gov. Gen. Emilio Terrero inviting him to
Malacañang Palace.
- Ask the Jesuits to ask copy he sent them.
- Found a copy from a friend.
- Gov. Gen. Terrero read the Noli and found nothing in it and thus
he gave a bodyguard (Don Jose Taviel de Andrade)

Msgr. Pedro Payo sent a copy of the Noli to Fr. Rector Echavarria
for the examination by a committee of the faculty.
Gov. Gen. Terrero was dissatisfied with the report of the
Dominicans.

ATTACKERS OF THE NOLI
Noli took form of a virulent war of words.
Father Font printed his report and distributed copies of it to
discredit the Noli.
Fr. Jose Rodriguez published a series of eight pamphlets under
the general heading Cuestiones de Sumo Interes to blast Noli.

DEFENDERS OF NOLI
Marcelo H. Del Pilar, Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor, Graciano Lopez
Jaena, Mariano Ponce, and other Filipino reformists in foreign
lands, of course rushed to uphold the truths of the Noli.
Fr. Sanchez, Rizal’s favorite teacher at the Ateneo defended and
praised it in public.
Don Segismundo Moret, former Minister of the Crown; Dr. Miguel
Morayta, historian and statesman and professor Blumentritt.

Rev. Vicente Garcia has a brilliant defense of the Noli under the
pen name Justo Desiderio Magalang blasted the argument of Fr.
Rodriguez.
1. Rizal cannot be an ignorant man.
2. Rizal did not attack the church and Spain.
3. Fr. Rodriguez said that who read Noli commit a mortal sin,
since he had read it therefore he also committs mortal sin.

Calamba’s Agrarian Trouble
Gov. Gen. Terrero ordered a gov’t investigation of the friar
estates to remedy whatever iniquities might have been present
in connection with land taxes and with tenent relations.
Calamba’s folks solicited Rizal’s help in gathering the favtsand
listed the grievances against the hacienda management.

Farewell to Calamba
The friars exerted pressure on Malacañan Palace to eliminate
Rizal.
They asked Gov. Gen. Terrero to deport him
The alarmed parents, relatives and friends advised him to go
away, for his life eas in danger.
Gov. Gen. Terrero then advised him to leave Philippines for his
own good.

A Poem for Lipa
Shortly before Rizal left Calamba in 1888 his friend from Lipa
requested him to write a poem in commemmoration of the
town’s elevation to a villa.
Wrote a poem entitled Himno Al Trabajo to the industrious folks
of Lipa.
