3. Rizal returned to the Philippines
1. He left Rome by train for Marseilles, a French seaport
2. From seaport, he boarded the steamer Djemnah on July 3
3. There were 50 passengers in the steamer including: 4 Englishmen, 2
Germans, 3 Chinese, 2 Japanese, many French and 1 Filipino
4. The steamer was going to Asia passing the historic “Suez Canal” and
heading to Saigon, Vietnam
5. Rizal transferred to another steamer Haiphong which was bound to
Manila on July 30
6. 3 days after, the steamer left Saigon, Vietnam to Manila on August 2
7. Haiphong arrived in Manila on August 5
Trivia: Rizal was the only one among the passengers who speak many
languages, so that he acted as interpreter for his companions.
4. Rizal returned to Calamba, his hometown
1. Rizal established a medical clinic
2. His first patient is his mother, who was almost blind
3. Patients from Manila and other provinces came to Calamba
4. Doctor Uliman / Aleman – nickname for Rizal as he practice his
profession as a physician
5. Rizal earned much money as a physician
6. He build a gymnasium for young individuals and use it for sports
7. He introduce European sports like gymnastics, fencing and shooting
to discourage the cockfights and gambling.
8. Rizal also painted beautiful landscapes and translated German poems.

5. The Novel “Noli Me Tangere”
and its Effect
to Filipinos and Spaniards
in the Philippines
6. Few weeks after his arrival,
Rizal received a letter from
Governor General Emilio Terrero
requesting him to come to
Malacaňan Palace
Governor General Emilio Terrero
stated somebody told him that
Noli contained subversive ideas.
Rizal explained that he only
exposed the truth.
The Governor General
had no hate against
Rizal.
Pleased by Rizal’s
explanation, he want a
copy of Noli so he could
read it due to curiosity
But Rizal had no copy
then because the only
copy he brought home
was given to a friend
7. Rizal visited the Jesuit father to ask a copy of Noli he sent them

Fortunately, Rizal got a copy of Noli from this priest and gave it to the
Governor General.
8. Governor General Emilio Terrero
knew that Rizal’s life was in
danger from powerful friars
For security measure, he
assigned Don Jose Taviel de
Andrade as bodyguard of Rizal

wrong with it.

destroy Rizal and they
are so powerful.Don Jose Taviel de Andrade was
a Spanish lieutenant.
He belonged to a noble family,
knew painting and could speak
English, French and Spanish
9. Here came the enemies of Rizal
Aside from him, many Spanish
preist in the Philippines hated
Rizal and banned the
reproduction of Noli Me Tangere.
They wanted to hide the novel
Noli Me Tangere from the eyes
of Filipino people.

• Due to curiosity, everybody wanted to read it
• News about the great book spread among the masses
• Filipinos were able to get hold of copies of the Noli which they
read secretly at night
11. Attackers of Noli
Father Font – printed his report and distributed copies of it to discredit the
controversial novel
Father Jose Rodriguez – published pamphlets to blast Noli and other anti-Spanish writing.
The pamphlets were sold daily in church after the mass.
The controversial Noli reached Spain and it was fiercely attacked by various senators.
Vicente Barrantes – formerly occupied high government position in the Philippines,
criticized the Noli
