In order to live the good life, one must eliminate all pain and live a life with
maximum pleasure. Unlike other hedonist philosophers, Epicurus evaluated pleasures
by their duration rather than their intensity, making psychological pleasures much
more desirable to physical pleasures. Epicurus, as a consequentialist thought that in
order to achieve the good life, one had to logically assess future consequences of
human actions through rational reflection and evaluation. If one were to rationally
reflect on death they would soon realise that there was nothing but oblivion after
death (de Botton 2000, p. 59).
The Leading Doctrines of Epicurean philosophy state that it is impossible to live
the pleasant life without also living sensibly, nobly and justly, and conversely it is
impossible to live sensibly, nobly and justly without living pleasantly (Epicurus,
1998b, p.53). Therefore, the good Epicurean believes in order to live virtuously,
one must adhere to a pleasurable life. For Epicureans it is impossible to live
virtuously and unpleasantly or vice versa. In addition, Epicurus describes pleasure as

consolidation. We assigned participants to one of three auditory conditions: no music,
instrumental music, or vocal music and asked them to read a word list and recall as
many words from the list as they could. Our central hypothesis was that participants
who listened to instrumental musicwould have better memory recall. However, we

Classroom
The learning environment I chose to create mirrors what my high school English
class would ideally look like if money was no object. According to the USC Rossier
School of Education, on average, students in the United Stated spend about 11,700
hours of their lives inside school buildings. I chose to design a comfortable, calm
learning space, that reflects passion based learning, with a neutral color scheme
and flexible seating arrangements to optimize my student s learning style and
environment so that in return what they learn in this space becomes part of who

their own regards, but the reason this one hit home for me was because of the

notable as early as the 19th century, and was named after Charles Ponzi in 1920

Not many people think of death as something that can be survived. After all, death is
an inescapable aspect of life for all things on Earth. There are, however, instances
where death stares one in the face and is repelled at the last moment. Whether this
