Study on properties of sisal fiber reinforced concrete with different mix pro...eSAT Journals
Abstract
The present research was designed to check the workability and strength properties of sisal fiber reinforced concrete with different mix proportions and different percentage of fiber addition. The materials were chosen to improve the various strength properties of the structure to obtain sustainability and better quality structure. Short discrete vegetable fiber (sisal) was examined for its suitability for incorporation in cement concrete. The physical property of this fiber has shown no deterioration in a concrete medium. Fibers were brushed, lined up and cut to obtain 4cm length. Degree of workability of concrete mix with 0.2% super plasticizer and water cement ratio 0.45 had good workability with slump value 53mm and compaction factor 0.88, which is effective, was obtained. Materials were hand mixed with 0.5%, 1% and 1.5% addition of fiber in M20 and M25 mix design and casted in cubes and cylinders. The obtained specimens were subjected to tests aimed to check the compressive, tensile and flexural strength. An increase in compressive strength by 50.53% and tensile strength by 3.416% was observed for 1.5% addition of fiber in M20 mix design respectively. An increase in compressive strength by 52.51% and tensile strength by 3.904% was observed for 1.5% addition of fiber in M25 mix design respectively.

Abstract
Concrete is strong in compression, as aggregate efficiently carries the compression load. However, it is weak in tension as the
cement holding the aggregate in place can crack, allowing the structure to fail. This weakness had been adjusted over many
decades by using a system of reinforcing bars (rebar) to create reinforced concrete; so that concrete primarily resists compressive

Study of properties of banana fiber reinforced compositeseSAT Journals
Abstract Natural fiber composites are nowadays being used in various engineering applications to increase the strength and to optimise the weight and the cost of the product. Various natural fibres such as coir, sisal, jute, coir and banana are used as reinforcement materials. In this paper both treated and untreated banana fiber are taken for the development of the hybrid composite material. The untreated banana fiber is treated by sodium hydroxide to increase the wettability. The untreated banana fiber and sodium hydroxide treated banana fiber are used as reinforcing material for both Epoxy resin matrix and Vinyl ester resin matrix. Coconut shell powder is used along with both untreated and treated banana fiber as a reinforcing material. In this process the banana fiber is treated with 5% of sodium hydroxide for one hour and the specimen is fabricated by hand moulding process. The mould used for fabricating the hybrid composite material is made up of aluminium with a debonding agent applied on the inner side. The banana fiber content is kept constant to 30% of weight fraction of entire composite material. The variation in mechanical properties are studied and analyzed. Here, the tensile strength has calculated by universal testing machine, impact strength has calculated by pendulum impact tester and flexural strength has calculated by universal testing machine with flexural test arrangement of the specimen. Then the treated and untreated specimens are analyzed and compared through Scanning Electron Microscope to study about its adhesion between fiber and resin matrix and surface morphology. Experimental Analysis on Strength Properties of Glass Fiber Concreteijtsrd
"The current world is witnessing the construction of challenging and innovative civil engineering structures. It has been established that when fibers are added in certain percentage to the concrete improves the strength properties as well as crack resistance and ductility. Fibers impart energy absorption, toughness and impact resistance properties to fiber reinforced concrete material and these characteristics in turn improve the strength properties. In the present experimental investigation the alkali resistant glass fiber of diameter 14 micron, length 24mm, having an aspect ratio of 855 was employed in percentage varying from 0, 10 , 20 , 30 , 50 , 60 and 80 to study the effect on compressive, split tensile and flexural strength on M40 grade concrete. At early age strength, the concrete with more than 20 of glass fiber gain strength around 61 until 82 faster than normal concrete. This implies that glass fibers assist in increasing the Compressive strength of concrete. The higher the glass fiber, in the mix the compressive strength also increases. Deepak T. J. | Senyange E. Composites are engineered materials made from two or more constituents with different physical or chemical
properties, which remain separate and distinct within the finished structure. A fiber is a material, which is made into
a long filament with diameter generally in the order of 10 microns. The aspect ratio of length to diameter can be
ranging from thousands to infinity in continuous fibers. Increasing worldwide environmental awareness is
encouraging scientific research into the development of cheaper, more environmentally friendly and more
sustainable construction and packing materials. For environment concern on synthetic fiber (such as glass, carbon,
ceramic gibers etc) natural fibers (such as flax, hemp, jute, kenai) etc are widely used. Industrial hemp fiber is one
of the strongest of the natural fibers available and possesses benefits such as low cost and low production energy
requirements. The primary objective of this research is to fabricate the natural fiber composites with suitable
processing/manufacturing methods and to examine the mechanical properties when subjected to Tension, Bending
and to compare & contrast the results with the available literature. In this research work, hemp fiber reinforced
Epoxy matrix composites have been developed by hand layup method with varying process parameters, such as
coupling agent(with and without compatibilizers) and different fiber percentages (10%,20% and 30% by weight).
The developed composites were then characterized by tensile test and flexural testing. Results show that the tensile
strength and flexural properties increases with the increase in fiber percentage. However after a certain percentage
the tensile strength decreases again. Compared to untreated hemp fiber, no significant changes in the tensile strength
have been observed for treated hemp fiber reinforcement. The flexural strength / modulus of the composite were
higher compared to pure epoxy for all filler/fiber loadings.
Investigations of Mechanical Characteristics of Chicken Feather-Teak wood Dus...IJERDJOURNAL
ABSTRACT: The present research has been undertaken with an objective to explore the potential of wood dust and chicken feather as reinforcing material in epoxy composites and to investigate the mechanical behaviour of the composites. Composites of teak wood dust (450 µm size) in 10,15 and 20 percentages of weight mixed with epoxy along with 5 % of chopped chicken feather have been prepared by hand lay up technique. The metallic mould developed in house was used to cast ASTM standard specimens. All the three samples have been tested in UTM for tensile strength and it is observed that composite with 15 % teak wood dust is having highest strength of 8.93 MPa. From water absorption tests in 24 hours the weight gain is very little and negligible for all the composites. Hence these composites can perform very well in moist atmosphere

Mechanical Behaviour of Agricultural Residue Reinforced CompositesScientific Review
The increasing awareness and the quest for newer materials have given renewed interest to the development of green composites. This article focuses on the potential use of abundantly available waste agricultural residue for the preparation of composites. The mechanical properties of Rice straw fibers reinforced with Polyester resin, Vinyl ester resin and Isophthalic polyester resin are studied and compared. Hand Layup technique is used to prepare the samples on which flexural and impact studies are made. Samples are made using different volumetric compositions of fiber and resin. The results show that the Vinyl ester resin and Isophthalic resin offer good mechanical properties when compared to the polyester resin. Both these resins show similar behavior with respect fiber loading. The flexural strength decreases with increasing fiber loading for polyester resin and increasing trend is observed for both vinyl ester and isophthalic resin. Impact strength increases for the increase in fiber loading up to a certain limit and then decreases. It can be concluded from this study that the agro-waste materials are attractive reinforcements from the standpoint of their mechanical properties.

The concept of an autonomic self-healing material, where initiation of repair is integral to the material, is now being considered for engineering applications. This bio-inspired concept offers the designer an ability to incorporate secondary functional materials capable of counteracting service degradation whilst still achieving the primary, usually structural, requirement. Most materials in nature are themselves self-healing composite materials. This paper reviews the various self-healing technologies currently being developed for fiber reinforced polymeric composite materials, most of which are bioinspired; inspired by observation of nature. The most recent self-healing work has attempted to mimic natural healing using more detailed study of natural processes. A perspective on current and future self-healing approaches using this biomimetic technique is offered. The intention is to stimulate debate and reinforce the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in this exciting field.

Evaluation of mechanical and water absorption behaviour of coir and rice husk...eSAT Journals
Abstract Coconut coir and rice husk are abundantly available in nature with the very low cost, and rice husk is an agricultural waste,
which is thrown away by the industry. The development of natural fiber composites from coconut coir and rice husk powder will
reduce agriculture waste and increases its usable value. Composite specimens were prepared according to the ASTM standards
with three different weight fractions of fiber, filler, and epoxy (5:15:80, 10:10:80, and 15:5:80) and conducted some mechanical
tests such as impact test and hardness test and water absorption behaviour. From the results it was found that, the mechanical
properties of untreated coir fiber and rice husk powder composites are more as compared to treated coir fiber and rice husk
powder composites, but in the case of water absorption property.

Comparative study of mechanical and thermal characterization of glasscarbon h...eSAT Journals
Abstract In this paper, the mechanical characterization of glass-carbon fiber reinforced hybrid polymer composite with epoxy resin as the matrix was investigated. Initially the basic mechanical characterization like tensile, bending, impact and wear tests have been carried out experimentally along and across the fiber orientation for the glass-carbon hybrid composite. The specimens were prepared and tested according to ASTM Standards. Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composites have been widely used high strength, low weight structural applications as compared to their metallic counterparts. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites posses superior specific strength and modulus but have a lower failure strain and high cost. Hence, the combination of both glass and carbon fiber in polymer composite may yield optimized mechanical properties. Study of mechanical and morphological properties of glass fiber reinforced mo...eSAT Journals
Abstract Polymethylmethacrylate and Poly (acrylonitrile-co-butadiene) rubber were used to modify Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) type epoxy resin and cured with stoichiometric quantities of the hardener 4,4’ diamino dipheny methane. This modified epoxy resin was used as the matrix for the preparation of glass fiber reinforced composites. E- Glass fiber was used as fiber reinforcement. The morphology and mechanical properties of the composite analysed. Morphological analysis of the fractured surface of the composites indicated good adhesion between the matrix polymer and the glass fibers. Hence an enhancement in mechanical properties of the composite such as tensile, flexural, impact and fracture toughness has been observed as there has been an effective transfer of the load from the matrix to the fiber. Hence these composites which exhibit high toughness, strength and dimensional stability can be envisaged to provide valuable contribution to high performance structural applications. The Impact of Digital Media on the Decentralization of Power and the Erosion ...ijtsrd
The impact of digital media on the distribution of power and the weakening of traditional gatekeepers has gained considerable attention in recent years. The adoption of digital technologies and the internet has resulted in declining influence and power for traditional gatekeepers such as publishing houses and news organizations. Simultaneously, digital media has facilitated the emergence of new voices and players in the media industry. Digital medias impact on power decentralization and gatekeeper erosion is visible in several ways. One significant aspect is the democratization of information, which enables anyone with an internet connection to publish and share content globally, leading to citizen journalism and bypassing traditional gatekeepers. Another aspect is the disruption of conventional media industry business models, as traditional organizations struggle to adjust to the decrease in advertising revenue and the rise of digital platforms. Alternative business models, such as subscription models and crowdfunding, have become more prevalent, leading to the emergence of new players. Overall, the impact of digital media on the distribution of power and the weakening of traditional gatekeepers has brought about significant changes in the media landscape and the way information is shared. Further research is required to fully comprehend the implications of these changes and their impact on society. This study primarily focuses on the design of a high side buck converter using an Arduino microcontroller. The converter is specifically intended for use in DC DC applications, particularly in standalone solar PV systems where the PV output voltage exceeds the load or battery voltage. To evaluate the performance of the converter, simulation experiments are conducted using Proteus Software. These simulations provide insights into the input and output voltages, currents, powers, and efficiency under different state of charge SoC conditions of a 12V,70Ah rechargeable lead acid battery. Additionally, the hardware design of the converter is implemented, and practical data is collected through operation, monitoring, and recording. By comparing the simulation results with the practical results, the efficiency and performance of the designed converter are assessed. The findings indicate that while the buck converter is suitable for practical use in standalone PV systems, its efficiency is compromised due to a lower output current. Sustainable Energy by Paul A. Adekunte | Matthew N. O. Sadiku | Janet O. Sadikuijtsrd
Energy becomes sustainable if it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Some of the definitions of sustainable energy include the considerations of environmental aspects such as greenhouse gas emissions, social, and economic aspects such as energy poverty. Generally far more sustainable than fossil fuel are renewable energy sources such as wind, hydroelectric power, solar, and geothermal energy sources. Worthy of note is that some renewable energy projects, like the clearing of forests to produce biofuels, can cause severe environmental damage. The sustainability of nuclear power which is a low carbon source is highly debated because of concerns about radioactive waste, nuclear proliferation, and accidents. The switching from coal to natural gas has environmental benefits, including a lower climate impact, but could lead to delay in switching to more sustainable options. “Carbon capture and storage” can be built into power plants to remove the carbon dioxide CO2 emissions, but this technology is expensive and has rarely been implemented. Leading non renewable energy sources around the world is fossil fuels, coal, petroleum, and natural gas. Nuclear energy is usually considered another non renewable energy source, although nuclear energy itself is a renewable energy source, but the material used in nuclear power plants is not. The paper addresses the issue of sustainable energy, its attendant benefits to the future generation, and humanity in general. Paul A. Adekunte | Matthew N. O. Sadiku | Janet O. Concepts for Sudan Survey Act Implementations Executive Regulations and Stand...ijtsrd
This paper aims to outline the executive regulations, survey standards, and specifications required for the implementation of the Sudan Survey Act, and for regulating and organizing all surveying work activities in Sudan. The act has been discussed for more than 5 years. The Land Survey Act was initiated by the Sudan Survey Authority and all official legislations were headed by the Sudan Ministry of Justice till it was issued in 2022. The paper presents conceptual guidelines to be used for the Survey Act implementation and to regulate the survey work practice, standardizing the field surveys, processing, quality control, procedures, and the processes related to survey work carried out by the stakeholders and relevant authorities in Sudan. The conceptual guidelines are meant to improve the quality and harmonization of geospatial data and to aid decision making processes as well as geospatial information systems. The established comprehensive executive regulations will govern and regulate the implementation of the Sudan Survey Geomatics Act in all surveying and mapping practices undertaken by the Sudan Survey Authority SSA and state local survey departments for public or private sector organizations. The targeted standards and specifications include the reference frame, projection, coordinate systems, and the guidelines and specifications that must be followed in the field of survey work, processes, and mapping products. In the last few decades, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of geomatics activities and measurements on the Earths surface in space and time, together with observing and mapping the changes. In such cases, data must be captured promptly, standardized, and obtained with more accuracy and specified in much detail. Towards the Implementation of the Sudan Interpolated Geoid Model Khartoum Sta...ijtsrd
The discussions between ellipsoid and geoid have invoked many researchers during the recent decades, especially during the GNSS technology era, which had witnessed a great deal of development but still geoid undulation requires more investigations. To figure out a solution for Sudans local geoid, this research has tried to intake the possibility of determining the geoid model by following two approaches, gravimetric and geometrical geoid model determination, by making use of GNSS leveling benchmarks at Khartoum state. The Benchmarks are well distributed in the study area, in which, the horizontal coordinates and the height above the ellipsoid have been observed by GNSS while orthometric heights were carried out using precise leveling. The Global Geopotential Model GGM represented in EGM2008 has been exploited to figure out the geoid undulation at the benchmarks in the study area. This is followed by a fitting process, that has been done to suit the geoid undulation data which has been computed using GNSS leveling data and geoid undulation inspired by the EGM2008. Two geoid surfaces were created after the fitting process to ensure that they are identical and both of them could be counted for getting the same geoid undulation with an acceptable accuracy. In this respect, statistical operation played an important role in ensuring the consistency and integrity of the model by applying cross validation techniques splitting the data into training and testing datasets for building the geoid model and testing its eligibility. The geometrical solution for geoid undulation computation has been utilized by applying straightforward equations that facilitate the calculation of the geoid undulation directly through applying statistical techniques for the GNSS leveling data of the study area to get the common equation parameters values that could be utilized to calculate geoid undulation of any position in the study area within the claimed accuracy. Both systems were checked and proved eligible to be used within the study area with acceptable accuracy which may contribute to solving the geoid undulation problem in the Khartoum area, and be further generalized to determine the geoid model over the entire country, and this could be considered in the future, for regional and continental geoid model. June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Fig 1: A schematic representing healing by polymers [4]
Techniques
The self-healing capabilities are embedded in the material
system duringmanufacturingof thematerial.Thetechniques
widely used are namely
Hollow Glass Fibres
The invention of advanced fibre-reinforcedpolymers(FRPs)
to attain improvisation in performance in engineering
structures emphasizes on the exploitation of the excellent
specific strength and stiffness offered by them. On
performing impact loading, poor performance was achieved
due to planar nature of FRPs. It indicates their susceptibility
to damage which is basically in the form of delamination.
These hollow fibres offer elevated rigidity andadjustmentof
wall thickness and degree of hollowness allows for greater
tailoring of performance. Using hollow glass fibres in
composites will make it possible to achieve the required
structural changes but it will alsofacilitate areservoirforthe
containment of healing polymer. These healing polymers
would flow into the damaged location for repairing them on
applying mechanical stimuli.
Main challenges faced while creating this healing systems is
developing a practical technique for filling repair polymers
into the hollow glass fibres. All the parameters of the glass
fibres are to be considered while tackling this problem.
Problems such as diameter, wall thickness, and hollowness
of fibre are to be considered as well. Bleay et al. [4]
developed and applied a fibre filling method which involved
“vacuum assisted capillary action”. The selected glass fibre
should also be able to withstand the composite production
process without rupturing while still being able to rupture
during a damage event so that healing agent can bereleased.
Hucker et al. [5,6] in 2004, observed that elevated
compressive strength was offered by fibres of greater
diameters and also giving a large reservoir to store healing
agents. The second priority was to check the capacity of
healing system to reach the damaged site and do the healing
of the damaged site. Viscosity of the healing material and
repair processkineticsgreatlyaffectedthismechanism along
with the third parameter to optimize which was optimizing
the density of the healing fibres in the matric, their spatial
distribution and final measurements of the sample which
directly altered the mechanical characteristics of the
composite material. To attain good mechanical properties,
adequate spacing of the repair fibres inside the composite
was needed.
Though hollow glass fibres were tested and had shown
tremendous improvement in properties. In addition, it was
also reported that many times healing was multipoint
healing, which was remarkable, but were further discarded
due to their fragility and handling difficulties.
Microvascular channels
This system was invented by getting inspired from the
complex microvascular systems available to us in biological
systems. There are various examples such as leaf venation
which closely resembles to 3-D microchannel structure
systems. Because of their typical architecture, replicating
these microvascular systemsremainsatough challenge. This
system has multiple advantages over encapsulation and
hollow fibres systems. This system is capable of healing the
same location in the matrix more than once. Numerous
healing can be achieved by providing a continuous supply of
healing agent to the matrix.
Toohey et al. [7], in 2007 reported that self-healing systems
can carry out the healing of same damaged location without
any external stimulus. The reported system which bio-
inspired coating-substrate design suppliedhealingmatter in
matrix with a 3-D microvascular network was first
embedded into the substrate.Ahealingcombinationofliquid
DCPD as the healing agent and solid Grubbs catalyst to start
polymerization of DCPD was used. In the test, catalyst was
made into a 700 µm thick coating of epoxy which was
applied to the top face of microvascular substrate and 200
µm wide channels were filled with healing agent and then
sealed. Healing efficiency of 70% was achieved by this
system and was able to do repeated healingfor upto7 times.
The quantity of catalyst in the top layer did not have any
effect on average healing efficiency per cycle but it affected
the no. of cycles testing and healing could be done.
Microvascular channels in place of hollow glass fibres had
shown multi cycle healing up to 7 cycles with efficiencyup to
70% had been reported. The manufacturinghad alsobecome
easy by improvement in lithographic technique, but the
problem of blockage in channels were reported. [8,9]
Microcapsulation / Encapsulation technique
Encapsulation is the technique of preserving a material, in
this case healing material, inside of a capsule. It is achieved
by preserving the microencapsulated liquid healing agent
and solid catalytic chemical inside polymer matrix. Upon
causing damage by cracking the matrix, microcapsules
release the healing agent into the matrix. All the materials
used for this process need to be carefully chosen. The
encapsulation process should be able to withstand the
reactive healing agent and must not move out of the capsule
shell as long as it is unutilised and also wall should be
sufficiently resistant to processing conditions of hosts to
ensure walls fractures only after composite fracture. It is
usually prepared by mini-emulsion polymerization
technique. The procedure involves the polymeric material’s
well-known oil-in-water dispersion mechanism. In most of
the studies, the microcapsules are made of a urea-
formaldehyde polymer that encapsulates DCPD as healing
agent.
The microcapsules produced in this in-situ method have an
average size of 10-1000 µm in diameter with a soft internal
shell in the 160-200 nm dense range and fillmaterialof upto
83-92 percent fluid healingsolution. Themechanicalrupture
of the microcapsule is the sine non-qua condition necessary
for regeneration method. Hence it is clearly essential to
manufacture microcapsules with ideal mechanical
characteristics and wall thickness.
In 2007, the impact of microcapsule diameter and crack size
on the efficiency of self-healing products wasalsostudied by

Rule et al. [10]. They used epoxy-basedfabriccomprisingthe
catalyst components of Grubb’s catalyst particles and
microencapsulated DCPD. The liquid volume that
microcapsule was capable of carrying to the crack face was
shown to be linear with microcapsule diameter for a given
weight fraction of microcapsules. The size of microcapsules
also plays a role in the system’s performance, in terms of
composite’s toughnessandnatureof theinteraction between
microcapsule and polymer matrix. Depending on these
relationships, the size and weight fraction of microcapsules
can be rationally selected to provide ideal regeneration of a
specific fracture size.
However, as observed by Williams et al. [11], the density of
the shell wall is mainly autonomous of production
parameters and is generally between 160-200 nm. But
during the encapsulation procedure, slight adjustment can
be made to change the resulting microcapsules. The size of
microcapsule is regulated primarily by the agitation rate
during the encapsulation phase. Typical rate of agitation
reported was 200-2000 rpm [11].
Brown et al. [12] observed in 2004 that maximum
toughening of the smaller microcapsules occurs at lower
concentrations simultaneously Rule et al. [10] in 2007
observed that samples consisting of large microcapsules
shows better performance than those with small
microcapsules at the same weight fraction, assumed to be
because of quantity of healing agent present in the sample.
Later on, it was found that best healing of the composites
was achieved in a sample consisting of 10 wt.% of 385 µm
capsules which results to 4.5 mg of the healing agent being
supplied per unit area of crack. The quantityof healingagent
which can be delivered to the crack area was measured on
the basis of size of microcapsule size and wt. fraction.
Quantification of improvement
Healing of a polymeric material refers to healing of various
mechanical properties which directly or indirectly play a
significant role in deciding the functional life of the material.
Wool and O’Connor [13] described a method which
describes the extent of healing in polymeric systems for a
range of properties. This method has been most commonly
adopted and also used for comparing “healing efficiency” of
different self-healing polymeric systems. Onebasicstandard
practice to assess the healing ability of polymers is by
comparing the fracture toughness both before healing and
after healing the composites. The healing efficiency is η,
Where k(healed) is the fracture toughness of healed
specimen and k(virgin) is the fracture toughness of virgin
specimen.
Crack healing efficiency (η) can be defined as the ability of a
treated sample to recover fracture toughness [13]
Evaluation of the fatigue crack propagation behaviour was
done by following the protocols mentioned by Brown et al.
[12] who defined healing in terms of life extension factor.
Where N healed is the total number of cycles to failureforaself-
healing specimen and N control is the total number of cycles to
failure for a similar sample without healing.
As per investigations, successful healingisconsidered asone
in which lost stiffness is restored due to damage induced by
cyclic loading rather than changes in crack growth rate or
absolute fatigue life.
Limitations
The method of encapsulating healing material has one
limitation which is, once if it gets used, healing won’t take
place from the same capsule as healing material has been
exhausted by healing process and it won’t be available for
next cycle of healing. While there are other feasible options
to make healing possible in the next consecutive cycles.
Microvascular healing system is capable of healing the
material in multiple cycles but it also has a limitation of
complex manufacturing process. Repairing is a time-
consuming process and immediate healing will not happen.
Protecting coating is also at risk of getting damaged during
the repairing being done.
Scope
Material degradation occurs at the nanoscale level and then
propagating to microscopiclevelwhichultimatelyaffectsthe
strength and durability of the material. And durability
remains a topic of great importance for today’s structural
complexities and to overcome it, it will be preferable to stop
and overcome damage at nanoscale level and restoring the
mechanical characteristics which is possible by developing
material which is capable of doing healing itself atnanoscale
level.
Carbon Nanotubes (CNT) are generally preferred as an ideal
filler material for reinforcement of mechanical structures
and molecular storage device. This is because a greater
amount of interfacial area is available due to small size of
CNTs. CNTs are of great interest and promising results have
been displayed already by CNTs. But CNTs cannot be still
used as Nano reservoirs for the self-healing purpose.
Dynamic tests can be conducted to evaluate more
mechanical properties to suggest future usage of material.
Modelling of materials can be done after knowing all the
properties of microcapsules because insertion of molecules
into CNTs is a typical procedure.
