    the infant & more comfortable
   Opening either in front or back(no fancy buttons)
   Drawstring necklines not recommended
   Rate of physical growth is rapid, extra seam allowance & hems
   Gowns and wrappers
   Shirts(soft cotton shirts of any type depending on weather)
   Diapers(should preferably have many layers)
   Slips
   Sweaters and hoods/Caps/bonnet-Slightly bigger than shirts or
    gowns
   Booties & shoes
   Bibs(absorbent & multilayered)
   Lap pads
   Baby blankets
   Crib sheet
   Towels & washed cloth
   Baby needs clothes for protection
   Best garment-overalls(long or full length, provide protection in
    knee area)
   Reinforcement in knee area of the pant legs can provide greater
    durability.
   Fasteners on the crotch of the overall save time when diaper has
    to be changed.
   Garments of firmly woven knitted fabric with appropriate seam
    finishes give good service for rough wear & launderings.
   For cold weather, mittens & hoods            are   necessary(light
    weight, wind resistant & washable fabric).
   Soft soled shoes may be needed if protection from cold is
    needed. Shoes should be ½ inch longer than toe & stocking
    should be ½ inch longer than foot.
   Training pants are often worn in which the central area is
    reinforced 3-5 times to improve the absorbency. Training pants
    are made of two-way stretch fabrics that fit snugly at the hip.
   Fabric for garments should be absorbent.
   Durable fabrics that can withstand friction especially in the knee area
    should be used.
   Garments with adjustable strap are more suitable.
   Long & loose dresses are not recommended as the child can get
    entangled & hurt.
   Provision for maximum freedom as the child is engaged is
    activities.
   Overalls are preferred with wide shoulder straps. Straps should
    be adjustable with provision for growth. They should preferably
    have openings throughout crotch area.
   The principal clothing concern in the toddler age is the selection
    of shoes. Flexible soled shoes with rough soles should be used&
    shoe should be ½ inch longer than big toe & 1/4rth inch wider
    than foot. Shoe area should be sturdy, flexible & wide enough
    because entire body weight rests on them.

   Drawstrings in neck or waist or in caps/hoods should be avoided.

Quality:
   Should be light in weight with warmth & protection.
   Color, design & texture of fabric should be suitable for age & size of
    child.
   Sturdy, soft & easy care fabrics with firm close weave are preferred.
   Underclothes should be loosely woven or knitted.

Design:
   Principles of design followed, simplicity, adequate allowance for
    self help, ease of care & comfort.
Allowance for growth:
   Allowance in height/length-deep hems, tucks at bottom &
    trousers with wide cuffs.
   Overalls with adjustable long straps.
   Yoke with crosswise tucks.
   Garments should be reinforced at places of greater wear i, e
    knees, underarms & crotch area.
Self help features-
   Long openings which are easily reachable.
   Large buttons/fastners are easier than small buttons.
   Ample armholes, sleeves & necklines.
   One piece garment is easier to put on than 2 piece.
   Front should be easily distinguishable than back.
   Mittens are easier to put on than gloves.
   Collarless dresses, shirts are easier to handle than the ones with
    collar. Avoid belts.
Ease of care-
   Easy to maintain
   Simpler styles that can withstand frequent launderings.
   Cheap buttons, poorly made buttonholes, poor stitching, inadequate
    seam allowance, hooks or snap buttons which are not securely
    fastened, decorations which are difficult to iron, poorly constructed
    openings should be avoided.
   No sharp or pointed edges, well finished seams.
Safety:
   Appropriate fabric
   Natural fibers like cotton for summers & cotswool for winter
   Avoid loose fitting garments
   Too many ruffles, loose fitting sleeves, flared skirts should be
    avoided.


Comfort features:
   Fabric should be soft & absorbent.
   Correct size garments
   Broad straps
   Light weight, smooth textures
   Seasonally appropriate clothing
   Shoes & clothing of correct size
   This period is very active, clothing plays an important role in
    social development too, as definite ideas about clothing, likes &
    dislikes are developing during this period. This is an age when
    belonging to a group, & wearing what the group wears is very
    important.
   Durable clothing must be provided that will withstand the strains
    of vigorous exercise.
   Dresses & shirts should have adequate fullness across the back;
    pleats at the centre back or yokes with fullness will provide arm
    movement without tearing the garment.
   Dresses that hang from shoulders provide more freedom than
    fitted dresses.
   The armhole of shirts & dresses should be atleast one inch below
    the armpit for comfort.
   The qualities in clothes that are most important to teen agers are
    fit & style.
   Construction is not often considered.
   Two piece outfits are preferred.
   Teen agers create new styles. This group has created &
    popularized new styles. Many fashion designers get ideas for their
    new designs from observing youth.
