DR JON GOLDIN - THE RISKS AND BENEFITS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE MENTAL HEALTH O...iCAADEvents
The Internet and social media now impact almost every aspect of people’s lives and have altered social interactions and ways of being. Many young people use the Internet and social media in a way that is detrimental to their mental health, with the potential of developing symptoms traditionally associated with addiction. Despite this desperation to use the Internet and social media, a recent study showed that the more time young people spend on social media, the less happy they feel about everything except their friendships. More speci cally, they felt less happy about school and school work, their appearance, their family, and life in general. It appears that girls are more a ected than boys. It is important however that we don’t blame the medium but the message. There are positive messages out there on social media, which can help young people with mental health di culties but also some very harmful messages and practices can be found online too. This talk will explore ‘The risks and bene ts of social media on the mental health of adolescents’.

A presentation intially given to the student services team of Fleming College in Peterborough Ontario. Presentation created and delivered by Jean-Paul Rains of Laurentian University and Matthew Melnyk of Brock University. This presentation was delivered by Rains Media and can also be found at http://jprains.com
This was a presentation to 9th graders to help them explore how to take control of their online persona. Examples reach back in time and project into the future when things like augmented reality amplify the information we put online.
Growing Up WIRED!
What Our Students Learn About Each Other from the Media
Mary Pat Gallagher and Marteana Davidson
It is estimated that today's teenagers (13-18) engage in nine hours of entertainment media per day and that tweens (8-12) engage in six hours. Today’s students are spending as much time learning from their media experiences as they do in their classrooms. What do our students learn about "each other" while playing video games, browsing the web, and engaged in social media?
Join media literacy educators Mary Pat Gallagher and Marteana Davidson in this media literacy workshop that sheds light on how media messages educate our students about each other.

PSEWEB: Paying your way to the top. Paid advertising on Facebook and Twitter. JP Rains, MBA
You should think that you can get to the top of the social networks organically. This should be the “right” way to get ahead. Well, it isn’t exclusively the way to get there. Advertising on Facebook and Twitter, with a budget, can yield significant results for your business goal as well as positive results for your brand.
Having spent the last 4 years advertising campaigns on Facebook and Twitter totalling in the six figures, I’d like to share insights, failures and successes.
Here’s an overview of the presentation:

Presentation given to #PSEWEB 2012. How to measure your success on Twitter.
With nearly all PSE institutions on Twitter, we’ve established that it is important to have a presence. That presence has differing levels of dedicated resources, different goals and varying measures of success. Like Ornithology, this presentation will cover the study of behaviours, effectiveness, and measurements of PSE Twitter presences.
Defining your success on Twitter can be difficult, even more difficult when trying to explain it to someone who is Twilliterate. If being on Twitter is merely a way for your organization to check a box, that’s fine. But, if you are interested in taking that check box and turning it into an easily attained performance measure, this presentation is for you.
Like any dedicated birdwatcher, we took a look at some of the more successful Canadian PSE Twitter accounts and aimed to find commonalities in their behaviours and how that translated to their successes.
Finally, after searching for ways to define success from # of followers, % breakdowns of interactions to 3rd party measurements, we take a look at the different ways (free!) for you to measure your success.
Look past your number of followers and turn that check box into a CEO friendly success story.
This presentation was given to the Sudbury Human Resources Professionals Association in November of 2011.
Rooted in providing an understand of social media, an overview of the implications within Human Resources and tools to better leverage social media within talent recruitment and others.
We have taken 10 Facebook pages of Canadian institutions, tracked their average posts per day, their users’ interactions, categorized the posts and then put a mesure of effectiveness on each of them. We all have to post those news releases that have zero interactions, but what can we do outside of those to boost our effectiveness? Having a baseline knowledge of Facebook’s edge ranking will start you off on the right foot for this presentation.
We explore the differences in ROI from uploading pictures, to videos, to photos or links – what will be the most effective way in which you can foster a link between your Likers, Friends and Followers. From guiding creation of user generated content to building your content capacity, you will leave this presentation with a strong sense of next steps.
Among other things, JP Rains is the resident social media person at Laurentian University. Last year, JP presented Risk Management on Facebook at the #pseweb conference. You can find him on Twitter and Facebook. Patrick Smoke also contributed to this presentation.
Working & Serving in an Updated World is an introduction to the Millennial (Generation-Y) generation entering the work force and the changes in technology that have shaped this generation. The presentation keeps the higher education audience in mind. This presentation was created by Rains Media and presented by Matthew Melnyk and Jean-Paul Rains

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

1Life cycle effects: Young people may be different from older people today, but theymay well become more like them tomorrow, once they themselves age.Period Effects: Major events(wars; social movements; economic downturns; medical, scientific or technological breakthroughs) affect all agegroups simultaneously, but the degree of impact may differ according to where people are located in the lifecycle.Cohort Effects: Period events and trends often leave a particularly deep impression on young adultsbecause they are still developing their core values; these imprints stay with them as they move through their lifecycle.http://pewsocialtrends.org/files/2010/10/millennials-confident-connected-open-to-change.pdf 290% of Millenials say they are close to their parents - Harvard Business Review3In the USA, Among 18-24 year olds, 39.6% was enrolled in college as of 2008.
