Improving Workplace Safety Performance in Malaysian SMEs: The Role of Safety ...AJHSSR Journal
Â
ABSTRACT: In the Malaysian context, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) experience a significant
burden of workplace accidents. A consensus among scholars attributes a substantial portion of these incidents to
human factors, particularly unsafe behaviors. This study, conducted in Malaysia's northern region, specifically
targeted Safety and Health/Human Resource professionals within the manufacturing sector of SMEs. We
gathered a robust dataset comprising 107 responses through a meticulously designed self-administered
questionnaire. Employing advanced partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) techniques
with SmartPLS 3.2.9, we rigorously analyzed the data to scrutinize the intricate relationship between safety
behavior and safety performance. The research findings unequivocally underscore the palpable and
consequential impact of safety behavior variables, namely safety compliance and safety participation, on
improving safety performance indicators such as accidents, injuries, and property damages. These results
strongly validate research hypotheses. Consequently, this study highlights the pivotal significance of cultivating
safety behavior among employees, particularly in resource-constrained SME settings, as an essential step toward
enhancing workplace safety performance.

ABSTRACT: Although a significant amount of literature exists on Morocco's migration policies and their
successes and failures since their implementation in 2014, there is limited research on the integration of subSaharan African children into schools. This paperis part of a Ph.D. research project that aims to fill this gap. It
reports the main findings of a study conducted with migrant children enrolled in two public schools in Rabat,
Morocco, exploring how integration is defined by the children themselves and identifying the obstacles that they
have encountered thus far. The following paper uses an inductive approach and primarily focuses on the
relationships of children with their teachers and peers as a key aspect of integration for students with a migration
background. The study has led to several crucial findings. It emphasizes the significance of speaking Colloquial
Moroccan Arabic (Darija) and being part of a community for effective integration. Moreover, it reveals that the
use of Modern Standard Arabic as the language of instruction in schools is a source of frustration for students,
indicating the need for language policy reform. The study underlines the importanceof considering the
childrenâs agency when being integrated into mainstream public schools.

2. ď˝ My Objectives- I have created some objectives so that I can keep organised when creating my TV News script.
This will also allow me to identify my productivity as well as my goals. Thus, by having objectives I know
specifically what I have to do in order to succeed. I will go into more depth, to detail my objectives during the
production of my script.
ď˝ topic
ď˝ order
ď˝ number
ď˝ Length
ď˝ Props
ď˝ Setting
Below I have bullet pointed a specific running order which I am going to abide by when creating my main TV News
Script.
ď˝ 1. Title Sequence
ď˝ 2. Lead- Local Schoolâs Action To Stop Cyber Bullying (to include studio introduction, cut to on location
reporter, 3 interviews on location, supporting graphics/statistics)
ď˝ 3. Vox Pop- public opinion
ď˝ 4. Sign Off- Back to studio with Bob
ď˝ 5. Weather â Charlotte
ď˝ 6. Sign Off
3. ď˝ Paper Work- BBC News have inspired me to use paper work as a prop
for my TV News Programme, I feel that this is an ideal prop to use in
my programme as it promotes the professionalism of my News
programme. It suggests that the story is real, truthful and that the
report has been planned
ď˝ Laptop- During my script planning, I identified the laptop on the desk
during a news broadcast of Sky News. I feel that using a laptop in my
News programme will not only highlight the professionalism of my
programme but make my programme look organised and as well
prepared as it should be through the use of up to date technology.
This will make the audience feel that their needs are being met.
ď˝ Desk- I have come to the decision that it is crucial for me to have a
desk when recording my main news story as this is an expected code
and convention of the setting for a news studio. After watching this
recording of BBC World News and seeing the setting of Midlands
Today in the Mailbox, I feel that without a desk, my programme will
lack professionalism and lead the audience to perhaps mistrust the
news given.
ď˝ Costume- It is very important that my anchors are dressed in smart
work wear. This will help my target audience identify with the
seriousness of my programme so that they realise that my programme
is a reliable source of news.
ď˝ Setting- I am still currently undecided about the setting of my
programme, as I am in favour of both types of setting; a skyline of the
city and the formal inside the studio setting. I believe that both
portray a formal perspective so that my news programme will be
identified as official and reliable. The skyline of familiar iconic
images of Birmingham helps to contextualise the stories and allow the
local audience to empathise with the stories.
The props I will use in my News programme will be basic but effective. This is
to ensure that I produce a recognisable media text through use of expected
and desired codes and conventions; my programme is of the factual news
genre and therefore a reliable source.
4. ANCHOR:
Good evening. Since the overwhelming advance in digital technology
and the rapidly increasing social media industry, cyber bullying has
grown at a drastically high rate. Since the release of the first
generation smartphones in 2007, reports of cyber bullying have
increased by 50% according to West Midlands Police. This has led one
local school to undertake a controversial approach - banning the use
of mobile phones completely in order to reduce the amount of cyber
bullying situations that occur in school. However, this decision has
left some parents outraged - worried for their childâs safety. Without
a phone, parents are anxious that they would be left unable to contact
their son or daughter before, during or after school to check on their
safety or contact them in case of emergency. Our reporter Claire Jones
is at the centre of this debate, at Archbishop Ilsley School, Acocks
Green, Birmingham.
REPORTER:
Yes Bob, the measures were introduced after a reported incident of a
14 year old female student that had her photograph taken in school
by another pupil, without her knowing. The photograph was then
uploaded to various social media websites and put on several pages
which were created to âexposeâ certain students from the Archbishop
Ilsley School. Several abusive images and comments had been left on
the page, which was active for at least two weeks before an older
student notified a teacher at the school. Our report may prove to be
distressing for certain audiences.
Interview1: (Older student who finds the page):
I first came across the page when it came up on my news feed. I
didnât even have the young girl as a friend on Facebook, yet through
these pages I and any other stranger who has access to the Internet
was able to see this young girlâs images and information about her.
The page told everyone what year and band she was in, what school
she went to, as well as posting pictures of her in her school
uniformâŚwhich was how I realised this hate page was set up about a
younger student in my own school. I was amazed!
Interview 2: (Teacher at the school):
As a teacher, you are well aware of how often incidents like these actually
occur, which is quite distressing to think about. So many students donât
know the major consequences of putting personal pictures or information
on the internet for the whole world to see. In order to improve the safe
guarding of students at our school, we believe that we have taken the right
measures by excluding the two students who created these hate pages and
also we believe that introducing a ban on mobile phones throughout the
school day will also help prevent future problems.
Interview 3 (Parent opinion on the ban):
To be quite honest, I think that the school should focus more on actually
improving the education that the students get about cyber bullying and the
dangers of the internet. I donât think itâs the mobile phones that are the real
problem, as the kids will all have access to them when they go home of an
evening anyway. I bought my son a mobile phone for Christmas, spent all
that money on it and for the main reason of being able to keep in touch
throughout the day. You know, as a parent itâs reassuring to receive a text
from your child when theyâre leaving school, getting the bus home, or even
feeling ill or something and needing to speak to their parent, not a teacher.
Fact File read out by reporter over graphics on screen:
5. Reporter (Rounding off):
The banning of mobile phones has proven to be a controversial
topic amongst teachers, students and parents within the school;
however the campaign to ban them has had a lot of success so far,
and has even made an impact on other schools in Birmingham who
have proposed to do the same.
Reporters voice over:

Back to you in the studio Bob.
Anchor:
Thanks Claire. Now for the weather with Charlotte.
Charlotte (Weather girl):
Good evening. Well the weather is rather confusing as we head
through the next few days, it is very changeable, we've got some
very mild, wet and windy weather to come. Temperatures this
morning reaching 10 Celsius compared to the average high of this
time of year is just 7, which is quite pleasant for mid January as
you can see here by the pictures sent in by our weather watchers
show some beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Tonight we do have
clear skies, temperatures should hold up quite nicely as the winds
are going to start to strengthen through the later half of tonight,
so we are looking at lows of between 5 and 7. On to tomorrow
morning and we have dry and bright conditions in the East for
longer but it wont be long before the cloud and rain works its way
in from the west. Some heavy downfalls are possible, we have some
gusts from about 40 to 50 miles an hour throughout the afternoon.
Through the overnight period we keep those strong winds which
will cut across from the West and therefore result in a rather soggy
day tomorrow, more rain continuing with some heavy down pours,
make sure you have you're umbrellas at the ready.
Anchor:
(informal chat/ joke with Charlotte) And now your up to speed
with all your local news in Birmingham. Our next bulletin is at 9
o'clock with Loretta Thompson till then good night.
