Scottish immigration to New Zealand was significant in the early 19th century. Though Scots made up only 10% of the UK population, they accounted for 30% of UK immigrants to New Zealand between 1830-1900. Over this period, around a quarter million Scots emigrated to New Zealand. Many were drawn by the promise of land and opportunity. They helped establish settlements and shape New Zealand culture, with place names and influences still seen today.
