Early Scottish immigrants came to New Zealand for several reasons: many sought work as farmers or hoped to acquire land; others fled the potato famine in Scotland; and many settled in the South Island where the climate was similar to Scotland's. The Scottish settlers in Waipu originally went to Australia but found New Zealand a more suitable place to establish themselves. The Scottish immigrants filled New Zealand's need for farmers and brought aspects of their culture like tartan skirts and Presbyterian churches.
