This document discusses surface coverage in wireless sensor networks. It proposes a new coverage model called surface coverage to address coverage problems where the field of interest is a complex 3D surface rather than a 2D plane or full 3D space. The document analyzes two problems for surface coverage: 1) the expected coverage ratio under stochastic sensor deployment, and 2) the optimal deployment strategy to achieve full coverage with the fewest sensors, proving this problem is NP-complete. It presents three approximation algorithms for surface coverage deployment and evaluates their performance through simulation.
