Science To understand nature through: Observation Finding relationships among pieces of known information ( data )
Scientific Method An organized way ( process ) to: Study Learn About the world around us
Scientific Method Involves: Asking questions / Identifying problems Finding answers
Steps of Process
Vocabulary Hypothesis : An educated guess Experiment : A way to test hypothesis Data : Information gathered in experiment
Give Evidence to Support Statements Validity : The experiment tested what it was supposed to test Reliability : If done again, the experiment results will be the same
Running an Experiment Control Group : group items receive normal treatment (helps us compare) Experimental Group : group items that are tested; they get different treatment Constant Factor ( independent variable ) : parts of the experiment that stay the same Variable Factor ( dependent variable ) : what you are testing; the one part that changes
Gathered Information (Data) Quantitative Data : involves numbers Qualitative Data : involves a description (5 senses)
What's the Difference? Hypothesis : based on a FEW observations & NO experimental evidence Theory : based on MANY observations & LOTS of experimental evidence Law : experimentally CONFIRMED & universally stands the test of time without change; used to make true predictions
