Scientific investigation follows the scientific method, which includes identifying a problem, formulating a hypothesis, designing and conducting an experiment to test the hypothesis, analyzing the results, and drawing a conclusion. The independent variable is manipulated while controlled variables are kept the same, and measurements are taken of the dependent variable. The conclusion either supports or refutes the original hypothesis based on the experimental evidence.
