SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION
Investigation is at the heart of science. It is how scientists do
research. Scientific investigations produce evidence that helps
answer questions and solve problems. If the evidence cannot
provide answers or solutions, it may still be useful. It may lead to
new questions or problems for investigation. As more knowledge
is discovered.
SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION
• -is a quest to find the answer to a question using the
scientific method.
• -begins with a question or problem. Often, the question
arises because a scientist is curious about something she
has observed.
SCIENTIFIC METHOD
- is a process for experimentation that is used to explore
observations and answer questions.
- is a systematic process that involves using measurable
observations to formulate, test or modify a hypothesis.
STEPS OF SCIENTIFIC METHOD
1. Ask Question
• -Starts when you ask a question about something that you observe:
how, what, when, who , which, why or where.
2. Do background research
• -Using a library and internet research to help you find the best way to
do things and ensure that you don’t repeat mistakes from the past.
• -Background Research, Plan, Finding Information, Bibliography,
Research Paper
3. Construct a Hypothesis
• -A hypothesis is an educated guess about how things work. It is
an attempt to answer your question with an explanation that
can be tested.
• A good hypothesis allows you to then make a prediction: "If _____[I do
this] _____, then _____[this]_____ will happen.
4. Test your Hypothesis by doing an Experiment.
• Experimental procedure, material list, conducting an experiment.
It is important for your experiment to be a fair test.
5. Analyze your data and draw a Conclusion
• -Once the experiment is complete, you collect your
measurements and analyze them to see if they support your
hypothesis or not. Tabular form
• -Data Analysis and Graphs, Conclusions
6. Communicate Your Results
• -To complete the science fair project, you will communicate your
results to others in a final report and/or a display board.
• -Final Report, Abstract, Display Board
TYPES OF VARIABLE
The variable that is being manipulated or controlled is called
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE.
The DEPENDENT VARIABLE changes because of a test. It is the
effect that arises from the changes in the independent variable.

Ask a Question: Where’s my cellphone?
Do a Background Research: He looked around him, his bed, under his pillow, on the bedside table
and on floor but it’s not there. Then he tried to remember about the last time he had it.
Make a Hypothesis: He suspected that it is in the pocket of his pants yesterday.
Test your Hypothesis: He checks the pockets of his pants but sadly, his cell phone is not there.
Analyze the data and make conclusion: So, He tried to recall what he did yesterday and remember that
he put it in his backpack. Then he checked his backpack and finally saw the cell phone inside his

My car breaks down and it won’t start. There is something wrong,
maybe my battery is dead. If my battery is dead, them my lights and
my car radio also won’t work. I try the headlights, they don’t work. Try
