The document introduces an object-based approach for classifying remote sensing data to detect changes. The approach classifies groups of pixels representing objects in a GIS database, rather than single pixels. Features used in the classification include mean values of spectral bands and textures for each object. The approach was tested on two areas using object-based classifications, detecting changes in 8.6% of objects compared to the GIS database. The changes identified potential updates needed in the GIS database.
