Iodine is a chemical element with the symbol I that is primarily used in nutrition and to produce acetic acid and polymers. It is found mainly as iodide in oceans and brine pools and is the heaviest essential element needed by higher animals to synthesize thyroid hormones. Iodine was discovered by French chemist Bernard Courtois in 1811.
