pastoral care groups: Middle Years (7-9) and
Senior Years (10-12)
The time allotted to Pastoral Care groups is 15
minutes at the start of each day.
Curriculum
4 classes of Year 7’s each with 25 students co-ed.
4 classes of Year 8’s – bigger cohort
4 classes of Year 9’s
• Subjects are stand alone and teacher competency
to integrate knowledge across disciplines. Each
subject has an over arching question to guide.
• HODs are advisors to the Middle School teachers
at planning meetings held at the end of each
term. HODs are the ones who ensure curriculum
is covered and mapped, not Assistant Principal
(Middle Years)
Learning Support
STAR Program
1 Star – Foundation to Yr 2
1 Star – 3 to 6
1 Star – 7 to 9
1 Star – 10 to 12
• They have 87 verified students from Foundation
to 7
• Teacher culture is different between primary to
secondary staff….
Classroom Dynamics
• Teacher stays in the classroom and the students
move. Students only move within their Year level.
The four core teachers are a constant and
specialist teachers vary. Students do not move
long distances, just down one corridor. So, 4 core
and 2 specialist teachers.
• Teachers noted that this opportunity to get up
and move is beneficial to student learning and
focus.
• Teacher has opportunity to decorate and
configure classroom space.
Pedagogy
• One foot in a Middle school and one foot in a
high school.
• Scaffold Scaffold Scaffold.
• Thinking UP from year 7 to 12. Able to grow
into the school.
• Transition students to no longer needing tidy
trays in Year 7 and fully utilise lockers in Year
8.
Mission and Outreach
• Community outreach days specific to Middle
School.
• 20 organisations around Burpengary that
could use help are presented to the Middle
School students at an assembly.
• In last week of term when reporting is done,
teacher takes a group of students to their
nominated organisation.
• This is mixed Year levels 7-9
Staffing
• Good position as the College was able to grow
into itself……therefore, time to ‘tap’ people on
the shoulder, advertised for Middle School
teachers, allow for a mix of teacher backgrounds,
look for people who will do the job.
• Hand selecting the right people. The Year 7 team
comprised of a Prep trained teacher, two upper
primary teachers and a senior secondary teacher.
• These people formulated the structure and
allowed it to work and grow.
• Structure first, then pedagogy.
