Scaffolding is a teaching method that provides students with gradually reduced support in learning new skills until they can demonstrate mastery independently. Jerome Bruner coined the term "scaffolding" and connected it to Lev Vygotsky's zone of proximal development, which refers to the difference between what a student can do without help and with guidance. Bruner and other psychologists found that encouraging students to tackle challenging tasks within their zone of proximal development leads to the most learning.
