Scabies is caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, which burrows under the skin and causes intense itching, especially at night. Common sites of infection include the fingers, wrists, forearms, genitals, buttocks, and nipples. Transmission occurs through direct skin-to-skin contact or indirectly through shared clothing or bedding. Diagnosis is made through visualizing mites, eggs, or feces under a microscope from skin scrapings. Treatment involves treating any secondary infections first, then using topical scabicides like permethrin or oral ivermectin.
