This document discusses using aromatherapy with lavender to reduce agitated behaviors in dementia patients on a senior behavioral health unit. A large percentage of patients on this unit have dementia and experience increased confusion, agitation and aggression in the afternoons and evenings. Recent studies show aromatherapy can reduce these behaviors. The unit wants to test using lavender aromatherapy to see if it decreases behaviors and the need for interventions, allowing for better patient care and shorter hospital stays. They will diffuse lavender and do assessments on alternating days with a placebo to measure the effects. The goals are to see reductions in behavior scores, interventions used and increases in sleep time with lavender compared to placebo.
