Early child development has a determining influence on subsequent life chances and health. The brain develops most rapidly in the early years, and experiences during sensitive periods can have lasting impacts. What influences early development are the environments where children grow up, including family, neighborhood, society, which are all changing. The Early Development Instrument is a population-based measure that assesses Kindergarten children across BC annually on physical health, social competence, emotional maturity, language and cognitive development, and communication skills. Areas with greater socio-economic vulnerability tend to see more vulnerability in early child development. Communities can build resilience through quality governance, access to resources and programs, community cohesion, local parenting styles, and developmental trajectories that are supported from birth through

The following slides are a presentation that was used to present a new youth-adult relationship program to community stakeholders. The program is meant to increase the positive relationships that students have in order to increase both their achievement and social skills after returning to the 2021-2022 school year. This program was set in motion to help with student mental health concerns after pandemic teaching and times of uncertainty. The program will help benefit students inside and outside of the classroom, while also helping them to strengthen their relationships with teachers. The program was inspired by many American College of Education courses that I took while pursuing my Educational Leadership Master's Degree. The program helps spark school improvement, student engagement, community collaboration, and much more.

Protective factors are conditions in families and communities that, when present, increase the health and well-being of children and families. These attributes serve as buffers, helping parents to find resources, supports, or coping strategies that allow them to parent effectively,
even under stress.
Adolescent pregnancy continues to be a grave problem in India not only from the obstetrical point of view but from the social and economical perspectives also. Complications of pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of mortality among women between the ages of 15 and 19 in the developing world.

Population and Public Health Branch of Saskatoon Health Region deployed improvement methods to develop a comprehensive strategy to improve outcomes for small children ages 0 to 5. The Early Years Health and Development Strategy (EYHDS) team comprised of 5 front line staff and an improvement consultant worked intensively over three months (Feb, Mar, and April, 2012) to Define, Measure and Analyze the opportunity for improvement and generated 25 recommendations. The result was a set of related recommendations for health planners, governments and community organizations. The presentation will demonstrate how improvement methods can be used effectively in community based health promotion areas of health care.

Originally, VYS was set up to provide micro-finance to slum dwellers who have come to the city from various surrounding tribal areas. But with their experience in the social field they are now active into the issue of “Parenting” in communities.
Evidence suggests that developing specific core capacities from childhood can support performance in school, work, and life.
These nine “core capacities” are cornerstones of life skills. We often overlook these capacities as innate basic skills, so they are underutilized in efforts to promote child well-being and development.
But by nurturing, expanding, and modelling these capacities, children can better understand and interact with the world around them, and realise their unique potential.

Quality Care Overview
What does QUALITY mean?
• How good or bad something is
• A characteristic or feature that someone or
something has
• Something that can be noticed as a part of a
person or thing
• A high level of value or excellence
Why is Quality Childcare
important?
What is Quality Childcare?
We will emphasize a high level of
value or excellence in maintaining
standards, best practices and
attitudes that support the
development of children in our care.
The state regulates quality based on the following aspect:
• Ratio: The number of children per adult in a home or classroom
• Group Size: The total number of children
• Health: Policies and practices around illness, immunization, nutrition,
cleanliness, and preventing the spread of germs
• Safety: Practices to make sure the environment is safe, both indoors
and outdoors. This includes practices around First Aid and Infant and
Child CPR training for staff, fire precautions, criminal background
checks
• Training, education and experience of the provider: Assures that
providers are knowledgeable in child development and other related
topics
Quality care is more than
just following regulations,
it is embracing the
individual, developmental, and academic
needs of children;
meanwhile respecting parents as their
primary educators.
Research has shown that building positive relationships with
children and their families, plus providing safe developmentally
appropriate learning environments produces long lasting
positive effects on children’s cognitive and social development.
This includes:
developmentally appropriate curriculum
knowledgeable and well-trained teachers
comprehensive services that support the health, nutrition and
social well-being, in an environment that respects and supports
diversity
Employing effective practices in the
following stages of quality care
are essential for
every early childhood teacher.
Stages of Development
Children grow and develop at different rates. While their
pathways through childhood differ, most pass a set of
predictable milestones along the way.
The information presented here offers a map that can
help you follow a child's journey.
The map divides the developmental milestones
into four areas:
Physical Development
From the start, babies want to explore their
world. As they grow, children's determination to
master movement, balance, and fine-motor skills
remains intense.
Social and Emotional
Social and emotional milestones are often harder to
pinpoint than signs of physical development. This area
emphasizes many skills that increase self-awareness
and self-regulation. Research shows that social skills
and emotional development (ref lected in the ability to

Should we more/less specific when it comes to the different programs, i.e. leave Mission in or don’t have at all? Mother Goose: An oral language program offered by the Mission Literacy Association to parents and children under 18 months that builds a foundation of literacy through songs, rhymes and phonemic awareness. It raises awareness of the difference these basic literacy skills can make in the lives of children. Increases interest among parents in enriching their homes through literacy. It creates social and supportive networks among parents. The program assists parents in gaining skills and confidence to give their children healthy early experiences with language and communication Mother Goose sessions are run on Saturdays IN SALMON ARM, to accommodate the many single-parent working families in the neighbourhood
Simiilar to last slide, do we add-in the actual location? Write a little more about the program, i.e. to help develop an active lifestyle and social skills for children as they grow? Help parents network and interact with others in similar situations? Is this child too young? Fun and Run Drop-in: District of Mission’s Mission Parks, Recreation and Culture located at the Leisure Centre, 7650 Grand St, and Success By 6 offer a free drop-in gym program for families with children aged zero to six. Once a week this program focuses on children’s motor and social skills with an instructor and parent participation. Come enjoy a free indoor gym time with your little one while meeting new people.
If we are going to be more specific I suggest that this slide talks about the Salmon Arm/Shuswap daycare creation/expansions. In 2007, this group was stuggling to find support for expansion. There was an extreme shortage of quality child care in the neighbourhood. EDI data was used at a community Child Care forum, and in our meeting with MLA George Abbott & Min of State for Child Care Linda Reid. As a result, Provincial funding of almost $100,000 was found, and along with the oragnization's massive grant writing campaign & fundraisers, the Centre will open an out of school program Oct 17, 2008 for 20 children and Preschool Program for 40 children aged 3-5! The Salmon Arm downtown core was losing supports and services for young families left and right. Their elementary school was closed. Low income families now had to bus their kids to schools in neighbourhoods that are very foreign to them. Through community action, the downtown school site was turned into an Activity Centre, but it was struggling. Armed with the EDI and SES data, we have been able to turn the tide towards keeping programs at the site, expanding some programs and in some cases creating new programs.
