Satellite radio uses satellites to broadcast radio signals nationwide, offering more channel options than terrestrial radio without commercials or signal loss. It requires a subscription and satellite dish but provides clear reception anywhere. The two main providers are Sirius and XM, which offer over 100 total music, news, sports and entertainment channels. While satellite radio has advantages like no commercials or static, disadvantages include upfront costs and temporary signal loss under obstructions.

Introduction to Satellite Radio Technology
1. 1
1 INTRODUCTION
Satellite Radio is digital radio that receives signals from a broadcast communication satellite.
Functions any place there is a line of sight between the antenna and the satellite.
Requires access to a commercial satellite for signal propagation
Satellite radio is – according to article 1.39 of the International Telecommunication
Union´s (ITU) ITU Radio Regulations (RR) – a Broadcasting-satellite service
The satellite's signals are broadcast nationwide, across a much wider geographical area than
terrestrial radio stations, and the service is primarily intended for the occupants of motor vehicles It
is available by subscription, mostly commercial free, and offers subscribers more stations and a
wider variety of programming options than terrestrial radio.
Satellite radio technology was inducted into the Space Foundation Space Technology Hall of Fame
in 2002. Satellite radio uses the 2.3 GHz S band in North America for nationwide digital audio
broadcasting (DAB). In other parts of the world, satellite radio uses the 1.4 GHz L band allocated for
DAB.

1.1History
Sirius Radio began in 1990, while XM Radio started up in 1992.
Starting in the early 21st century, when satellite radio hookups became more feasible, the
competition between these two companies became fierce.
The competition ended in 2007, when Sirius bought out XM Radio.
The two major satellite radio providers in the United States, Sirius Radio and XM Radio, began
operations in the early 1990s.
1.2What Is Satellite Radio?

2 How Satellite Radio Works?
Satellite radio uses stationary transmitters which have limited range to broadcast, uses mobile
satellites orbiting the earth.
They pick up radio signals straight from orbiting satellites.
The satellite bounces the transmitted radio frequency off of the satellite and out to the millions of
satellite radio listeners around the world.

4 ADVANTAGES
One of the great advantages of satellite radio is the fact that the programs are not interrupted by
commercials. This is because the provider's income comes from listeners and not from advertisers.
Satellite radio services offer around 70 programs of commercial fee music channels each and you have a
great variety of choices, from mainstream rock, hip-hop and dance music to folk music, opera, blues and
many more.
Another great thing about satellite radio is the absence of static. You can be driving from the West Coast
to the East Coast in the United States of America and you will not get any static at all on the way. The
satellite radio signal is digital, which means that you will get crystal-clear sound whatever you go.
Satellite radio tuners receive, along with the actual radio programs, an influx of metadata that consists of
information regarding song title, artist, and radio program and radio channel. This means that your
satellite radio receiver will display all the necessary information about what you are listening to. For
instance, if you hear a great song and you want to know which artist sings it, you just look at the
receiver’s display.
All satellite radio programs are uncensored. This is one of the reasons why artists like Howard Stern
chose to move their shows on satellite radio. You can also listen to your favorite hip-hop songs without
the interruption of those anything 'beep' sounds.
Satellite radio programs also offer information about local traffic and weather conditions. The
information is very detailed especially for those who live in big cities. If there is a major national

calamity and other terrestrial radio stations will not work, you can always count on getting accurate
information from satellite radio program. You can also listen to satellite radio online on your computer
If you still are not convinced on why you should pay money for something that you can get for free,
think about how much time you have wasted listening to commercials and all kinds of other boring stuff
on terrestrial radio programs. Traditional radio is not free, despite the popular belief. It is time-
consuming and irritating because you have to listen to five minutes or more of commercials so that you
can finally hear a song you like. The satellite radio subscriptions are very affordable and, for around 13
dollars per month, you get exactly the programs you want, which you can listen to where ever you are at
the best sound quality at.
Satellite radio is great for you especially if you travel a lot. If you are traveling across the
United States of America, for example, you can listen to the channel or channels you want during your
whole trip, without losing signal or getting static. If you have a traditional radio, you will have to keep
changing channels every hundred miles, but if you are using satellite radio you do not have to do that
because the geographically availability of programs is not a problem. Satellite radio subscribers will
soon get the chance to watch video programs as well. Both Sirius and XM satellite channels that will
have some of the great advantages that are currently available to satellite radio: commercial free
programs, great quality of sound and vast geographical availability.

5 DISATVANTAGES
There seem to be fewer local FM stations with the music programming that I like - down to one station
from several a few years ago.
Satellite radio gives me more channels. It also gives me radio all the way when I am on the highway
between cities where I’m out of range between cities (~50 miles from the city) because the satellite
comes from overhead satellites.
OTOH, satellite often loses signal momentarily under freeway overpasses and under thick tree cover.
And metal awnings (like over gasoline pumps). Not sure about the global coverage; I live in the South
Central US.
And of course, the monthly fee.
Another alternative would be the live streaming radio services like I Heart Radio on the internet… I
haven’t tried that as an alternative using lots of cell bandwidth

7 CONCLUSION
Radio is now merging now a day in terms of music, entertainment, and knowledge.
The time is here when radio has become an integral part of our lives and there is no bad in enhancing the
techniques to get the facilities which we need to enjoy and learn something new.
