What is Material Master?
The material master contains information on all the materials that a
company procures or produces, stores, and sells.
Eg : Consider shoes like NIKE, PUMA etc . And in order to make a SHOE
which is completely a finished product we need some raw materials like
leather, rubber etc.
In such manufacturing industry they maintain rubber, leather etc as a
separate material.
Material master can be of raw material, finished product or semi-finished
product which we will discuss later in material type.
4. Configuration Settings :
Path :
SPRO -> Logistics General -> Material Master
We maintain configurations in Logistics General as Material Master is not
only used by MM. Each and every department like finance, sales etc have
their own data. Only the common data for each and every department is
entered.
5. Configuration Settings : Data Screens
The most interesting part of SAP is customization. Each and every
organization have their own data for each and every material. So in order
to maintain that particular data we have some settings. In addition to the
standard Data Tabs/Screens in material master creation we can add our
own data screens.
All those configuration settings can be done through the below screenshot
6. Configuration Settings : O/p format of Material
Numbers
A material can have a maximum length of 18 characters.
So there are two formats
i. Lexicographical ii. Leading Zeros
If we check Lexicographic format and if material length is 18 and IF OUR
MATERIAL IS OF LENGTH 10 like(ABCDEFGHIJ) then it will be displayed as
ABCDEFGHIJ.
In Leading Zero format it will be displayed as ‘00000000ABCDEFGHIJ’
We can use template if we want our material to be displayed as
ABCDE-FGHIJ
7. Configuration Settings : Company Code Level
There are some settings for Material master at Company Code level.
Eg : If we receive some material ‘ABC’ in the previous month and if we
want to do Good Receipt(GR) in the next month. We need to maintain
Allow Back posting in configuration.
Tcode : OMSY
8. Material Type and Material Group :
Material Type defines about the type for which the material belongs .
Material Group is grouping materials on common attributes .
Let’s go with EXAMPLE
9. Material Type and Material Group : Part 2
Example : Bolt
So we know the functionality of bolt and we can put it under
Material type : Raw Material
Material Group : Mechanical Parts (Refer Notes )
RAM
Material type : Finished Product
Material Group : Electrical Parts
10. Material Type Configurations :
So we know what exactly is Material Group and We will look into Config.
Settings
In Define Attributes of Material Types we define our own material type like
ZROH for Raw material, ZFERT for finished Product.
Try to copy the details from the SAP provided material types while creating
your own material type.
11. Material Type Configurations :
In previous slide we can see that there is something called
QUANTITY/VALUE Update.
Which means “HOW THE MATERIAL IS BEING MANAGED either by
QUANTITY BASIS or by VALUE BASIS’ ?
12. Field Reference Configurations :
There will be four options for every field.
1. Hide
2. Display
3. Optional Entry
4. Required Entry
These kind of settings can be done through this configuration.
Suppose if I want to hide material group field in Basic Data TAB . I need to
get technical name of that particular field and should go to Field
Reference.
Then search with that technical name.
13. Field Reference Configurations : Part 2
The numbers next to field is FIELD SELECTION GROUP.
We put different fields under one group if we want to control them
collectively.
We can create our own Field Selection Group.
We can create Field Reference based on Industry Sector, Plant and Material
Type
14. Material Type Special Transactions
What does special transactions mean?
Suppose if we want to create RAW MATERIAL . We usually go to MM01
and there we select ROH from Material Type Drop Down.
So instead of that we can create our own transaction like
MM_1 we can replace ‘ _ ’ with R(Raw Material), F(Finished Product)
depending upon requirement.
So If we enter MMR1 it will treat that we are creating ROH Material Type
and don’t ask again for Material Type.
15. Material Type Controls?
What does Material Type Controls?
Field Reference : Control of fields in data screens.
External number Assignment : We can give our desired number for new
material.
X-plant status : Cross Plant maintenance Status
Item category
Initial Status Of Material
We need to select views while entering MM03 and we can select some
views by default based on material type.
Price Control in Accounting Tab.
Quantity/Value Update
Information regarding Purchase Orders for this material.
17. Material Creation :
In each and every Organization material creation depends mainly on two
levels which are INDUSTRY SECTOR and MATERIAL TYPE.
Tcode MM01 To create material
MM02 for Changes
MM03 for Display
We can maintain Default views in MM01 depending on Industry Sector and
Material type.
18. Detailed Information on Views :
What are the Mandatory/Non Mandatory fields that comes under SAP MM
perspective?

24. Interview Questions
1. How do you classify or at what levels do you classify material at an
organization?
What is Material Master?
Difference between Material Type and Material Group?
Tcode to change Material Type
Can we change Material Type of a material?
What does Material type Control?
How to mass maintenance of material master Tcode?
Tcode to flag material for deletion?
Can we use material if it is deleted?
25. Interview Questions
What are the fields that are maintained while material creation in each
view?
What are some tables of material master
What can be used in field reference?
How do you check material type in MM03?
How do you enter material description in different languages?
If your organization is producing BOLTS then it will be treated as ‘FINISHED PRODUCT’ and IRON will be under RAW MATERIAL TYPE.
