Sanskrit drama emerged between the 1st and 10th centuries CE in India. Plays were primarily written in Sanskrit and dealt with themes from history and mythology involving kings, heroes, and supernatural beings. Only elite characters spoke Sanskrit, while others used Prakrit languages. One of the most famous and influential plays was Shakuntala by Kalidasa, which is known for its lovely poetry, humor, and resolved conflicts. Sanskrit drama aimed to elicit rasas or flavors - aesthetic sentiments and passions in audiences through the works.
