Many young people use the Internet and social media in a way that is detrimental to their mental health, with the potential of developing symptoms traditionally associated with addiction. Despite this desperation to use the Internet and social media, a recent study showed that the more time young people spend on social media, the less happy they feel about everything except their friendships. More speci cally, they felt less happy about school and school work, their appearance, their family, and life in general. It appears that girls are more a ected than boys. It is important however that we don’t blame the medium but the message. There are positive messages out there on social media, which can help young people with mental health di culties but also some very harmful messages and practices can be found online too. This talk will explore ‘The risks and bene ts of social media on the mental health of adolescents’.

Me, Myselfie, and I: The Psychological Impact of Social Media Activity
Not too long ago, I relentlessly teased my 21-year-old sister when she revealed her strategies for achieving maximal positive feedback on Facebook photos. There were timing basics—don’t post on Friday or Saturday nights because no one is checking. She also recommended sensitivity to time zones so as to avoid an entire coast being asleep when your picture is posted. There was even attention to Facebook’s sharing algorithms. Rather than posting and tagging other people in the photo simultaneously, it was wise to wait on the tagging. That way, once several hours had passed and the photo filtered into the depths of everyone’s news feeds, a new tag would prompt it to resurface front and center, in turn receiving a fresh wave of "likes". And wait, there's more--after almost 10 years on the site, she could even report back to me her most liked Facebook post ever. It all sounded…ridiculous. I chalked it all up to our (whopping) three-year age difference—kids these days and their all-consuming social media obsessions. Back when I was in college…
And then several months later I sent my sister the most shameful text message of all time (for the record, I was only allowed to publish Emily Schacter’s Facebook Strategy Tell-All under the condition that I owned up to my own social media low-point). One morning last month, I posted what I thought to be quite an entertaining picture on Facebook. But, to my surprise, twenty minutes passed by and I had zero likes on the photo. Forty minutes, still nothing. Maybe I accidentally posted it with extra privacy restrictions? Nope. An hour. And still, even my two most loyal Facebook like-ers (I’m looking at you, Mom and Dad) hadn’t given my picture some love. Desperation took over.
I had cracked, and in doing so I lost my privileges to ever mock Emily for her Facebook posting habits again. Why in the world did I care so much about an un-liked photo? Was it really a lack of likes, rather than the four hours a week I dedicate to watching Bachelor in Paradise, that I was concerned made me look like a loser? When and how did Facebook likes become such a valuable social currency? For better or for worse, I am hardly alone in my experience. Recent research has documented how technology, and social networking sites (SNS; e.g., Facebook, Instagram) in particular, have given rise to a grow.

When she began her freshman year in 2011, Sydney embarked on a tumultuous transformation. She had been accepted to her “reach school,” Duke University, where students seemed to strive for perfection both academically and socially.
The change came fast and without warning for Sydney, who asked to be referred to by her first name for this story to protect her privacy. In the classroom, she did not coast by as she had in high school. Her grades lagged, friendships both formed and faltered, and at times she lost confidence. Although many students find it difficult to adjust to college, Sydney carried the additional weight of an anxiety diagnosis. Change, she noted, can exacerbate the effects of a mental health disorder.
Sydney turned to her phone for an alternate reality. In the current college culture, Sydney explained, “the perfect girl on Instagram” looks like she’s having “so much fun,” has more followers than she is following, and collects “likes” in nanoseconds.
As she scanned the posts and profiles of her peers, Sydney struggled to distinguish between fact and fiction. She felt a disconnect from the image of perfection.
“I was glued to my phone freshman year. I couldn’t put it down,” recalled Sydney, who graduated from Duke this spring. “I was more critical of myself, of what I posted, of what I had up.”
College students today are more detached from their peers than ever before. Research shows they’re less likely to have tangible relationships; enter college having spent less time socializing as teens; are more likely to be heavily medicated; and feel a greater pressure to be academically and socially successful than in the past.
Paired with the increasing dependence on social media, these factors leave students susceptible to mental health complications, some experts say. Meanwhile, the college community is using technology to reach students who need help.

1. Today, sharing of private information has become the norm. Every person, in particular the young people update their statuses on a daily basis as they go about their activities. People use social media sites such as Instagram to share their photos of themselves of their day-to-day lives. In addition, Facebook is a platform that is used to share with people what was on their minds at that particular moment. On Twitter, young people share their tweets on various subjects as the favorite ones get more retweets. Through the various social media sites, individuals become famous for all the wrong reasons. 2. Social media sites have a great influence on teenagers today and the impact continued to increase over the years. For instance, teenagers on Twitter had grown significantly from 16% to 24%. The typical teenager on Facebook has at least three hundred friends while a typical teenager on Twitter has more than seventy-eight followers. Research indicates that at present teenagers are not as enthusiastic about Facebook as they were in the past. There are more adults on Facebook; therefore, making it more boring and there is more drama and chances of clashing. An estimated 60% of teenagers on Facebook keep their profiles rather private and they report high levels of confidence in their quest to manage their settings.
3. Many parents often ask themselves what their children are always doing on the internet and in particular social media all day long. It is important for these parents to understand that social media is now a way of life. One of the greatest effects of social media is that it is addictive. It is said that people have to log in to Facebook at least five times a day. It has become such a way life and a way to communicate with the rest of the world that a person cannot stay away from social media. According to studies, at least 63% of American have to log on to Twitter on a daily basis. Further, 40% of Americans log on more than once a day, a fact that almost all teenagers now have a mobile phone with them. This makes it easier for them to access social media sites as often as possible. This is not positive since it means that they will get addicted.
4. Getting addicted to social media is like any other addiction because people are not in a position to interact with other people since they do not have time to waste. Social media starts in the most harmless way possible. It starts to act as a source of distraction as well as boredom relief. Comments and likes are a positive reinforcement for people who had posted statuses or photos making it difficult for the individuals to stop that which they are doing. - 2. IN UNDERSTANDING THE WAYS IN WHICH SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCES USERS, SOCIAL MEDIA IS OFTEN LOOKED AT THROUGH A NEGATIVE LIGHT…
- 3. With that being said… there has been research and developments which state that social media actually gives off positive psychological vibes to its users.
- 4. Everybody uses social media differently and as such, the ways in which individuals choose to use social media is directly based off of ones own personal needs. For example: Instagram and Facebook shows viewers a positive ideal of ourselves. The “likes” and recognition our profiles and images receive, directly reflects positive vibes, which overall increases ones self-esteem.5
- 5. A STUDY DISCOVERED THAT 30 COLLEGE LEVEL STUDENTS HAD “A NATURAL HIGH THAT WAS SPARKED WHEN THEY WERE ON THE SOCIAL MEDIA NETWORK THAT LED TO THE RELAXED HEART RATES AND LOWER LEVELS OF STRESS AND TENSION.3” Throughout this study, students were observed 3 different ways: “looking at panoramic landscapes, performing complicated mathematical equations and using Facebook.” This study states that “Facebook uncovered high levels of attractiveness and arousal.3”
- 6. Furthermore, Facebook also allows students to feel better connected with a new or unfamiliar university community, as Facebook becomes a common ground for the promotion of social events and opportunities to immerse oneself within the college experience. Facebook assists in growing social confidence through meeting new people.4
- 7. Not only is Facebook beneficial as it provides opportunities to meet new people, Facebook is also helpful towards shy or more introverted individuals in improving social skills, as it’s often easier or safer to form connections behind a screen.7
- 8. BOOSTS SELF-ESTEEM! Browsing social media sites has been found to increase ones self-esteem. Cornell University found individuals to depict an increased “psychological benefit to using Facebook, and gets a self-esteem boost just by looking at ones Facebook wall.3” This is because people use their social media as a way to display the best versions of themselves; revealing an appealing image of themselves in their own control.3
- 9. ‘Unlike a mirror, which reminds us of who we really are and may have a negative effect on self-esteem if that image does not match with our ideal, Facebook can show a positive version of ourselves.3”
- 10. Social media is also researched for positively increasing productivity…
- 11. A study discovered that “10-minute Facebook breaks makes employees happier, healthier and more productive.3”
- 12. ENHANCES LOVE LIFE? Research has noted that “60% of singles will friend someone new on Facebook after meeting them in person.3” And with this in mind… “25% are likely to contact their new love interest via Facebook.3”
- 13. DID YOU KNOW? 40% will update their relationship status on Facebook first 24% will tell their friends in person first 79% of couples send Facebook messages to each other everyday 60% post romantic messages on partner’s Facebook wall And when the relationship ends……… “more than half of those surveyed immediately update their status to single, which automatically sends out a notification to their friend list to start the dating cycle over again.3”
- 14. Social media also allows individuals to “keep in touch with family and friends,2” especially those who live far away. Sites such as Facebook or Instagram provide an excellent opportunity for loved ones to feel a sense of connection to one another even though they may not necessarily live nearby.
- 15. Furthermore, social media sites may also be used as a coping or comfort tool by individuals who may feel lonely or alone.6
- 16. Although it is shown that there are plenty of positives to using social media, it is important to make note of the safety ways to use social media correctly, because without this in mind, social media can easily become a negative place.1
- 17. 1. “Be familiar with the privacy settings1” 2. “Avoid accidentally sharing personal details1” 3. “Take a technology break everyday1” 4. “Forget the popularity contest1” 5. “Your social media should reflect yourself.1” Do not try and copy someone else, express yourself in the ways that make you confident and happy. Just remember….
- 18. “Think about what people are doing on Facebook today.
