Writing an essay on the topic of "Samples of Argumentative Essays" presents a unique set of
challenges that require a careful balance of research, critical thinking, and persuasive writing
skills. The difficulty lies in the need to not only showcase a comprehensive understanding of the
subject matter but also to construct a compelling argument that engages the reader.
One of the primary challenges is the extensive research required to gather a variety of
argumentative essay samples. This involves sifting through numerous sources, analyzing different
perspectives, and selecting relevant examples to support your own thesis. The process demands a
keen eye for credible information and the ability to discern between reliable and unreliable
sources.
Furthermore, crafting a well-structured and coherent essay involves organizing the collected

General Electric and Honeywell Merger
Introduction The merger case between General Electric Co. (GE) and Honeywell
Inc. has sparked considerable debate between US antitrust agencies, economists and
scholars since the announcement of its unsuccessful attempt by the European
Commission (EC). GE is a corporation active in aircraft engines, financial services,
and transportation systems while Honeywell is a manufacturing company producing
aerospace products and is the leading supplier for engine starters. Both parties are
from the US. In Oct 2000, GE and Honeywell agreed to merge and Honeywell was
to become a wholly owned subsidiary of GE. The US Department of Justice (DoJ)
conducted thorough investigations and approved the merger with limited conditions

There has been considerable debate amongst academics whether foreclosure would
reduce competition or not. However, Bernheim and Whinston (1998)(cited in
Lipczynski et al., 2005, p. 581) argue that there is no black and white; the effects
of foreclosure will vary according to conditions Krattenmaker and Salop (1986)
(cited in Lipczynski et al., 2005, p. 581) derived 3 conditions to ascertain if
foreclosure harms competition. 1. Is the ability of excluded rivals to compete
reduced? Competitors might face increasing costs when firms deliberately
increase the price of supplies or when competitors are forced to bid for remaining
inputs. However, this does not mean it will increase competitor s cost if supplies
are available from alternative suppliers. 2. Is the market increased by exclusion?
Firms may not necessarily gain market power if it has powerful competitors or if
entry is possible. This may harm competitors but not necessarily competition. 3. Is
the exclusion profitable? Profit increase from enhanced market power doesn t
necessarily counterbalance the loss in revenue. *coloured sentences represent

In the modern time, the competitive business world seems to be more serious than
previously. The main aim of business strategy is creating the benefit in trade and also
reducing some of its limitations. Furthermore, another strategy that is applied to the
modern business world is to link the economic globalization such as in order to
become a listed company on the stock market. We can see lots of advantages by listed
companies compared to private companies such as financial stability or are more
opportunities to do business. It is an absolutely interesting that the top biggest
companies in the world, (by top 100 companies) are all listed on the Stock Market,
such as Wal mart stores the biggest companies by 2010 (Fortune global 500, 2010)...

The Battle Of Team Desobry At The Town Of Noville
INTRODUCTION
This mission command analysis evaluates the battle of Team Desobry at the town of
Noville, Belgium. These events took place 18 19 December 1944, and later impacted
the battle fought at Bastogne during World War II. It is the goal of this review to
discuss and analyze three mission command principles displayed during this battle:
Create shared understanding, exercise disciplined initiative, and the acceptance of
prudent risk. One of the main characters that took part in this story was the 20th
Armored Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division. The commanding officer of this
element was Major William R. Desobry. During the events of World War II, the
German forces were trying to gain control of the Ardennes to cut off the allies
supply lines in order to isolate British forces from the American troops. A pivotal
task for German forces to attain this goal was to gain access and take control of the
Belgian town of Bastogne. However, an important strategic stepping stone to get
there was Noville, which is just seven kilometers northeast of Bastogne. Two main
reasons made Noville such a critical location for the Germans: First, it had a junction
of roads that were important for displacement of German forces to the West. Second,
it provided an alternative road to access Bastogne from the north.1
DESCRIPTION OF THE BATTLE On 17 December, 1944, five German divisions
were able to push through the VIII Corps defensive line 100 miles east of Bastogne

Why Did Icarus Lose His Son
The world doesn t give you what you ask for, it gives you what you deserve. People
s words and actions can ruin their character. Daedalus actions, words, and
descriptions caused him to lose his child, Icarus. Pride and punishment is theme in
Daedalus and Icarus. With this contingency, Daedalus actions caused him to lose
his son. In Ovid s story, one of his actions were that he went first. Instead of letting
his son go first, he went causing his son to get left behind. Since he put his life and
ego before his child, he no longer has a son. Pride is like a knife it can cut you deep
inside, words are like weapons they harm at times. Daedalusgave Icarus advice before
they took flight because he didn t think he would survive. It seemed
Japan During The Meiji Period
From the early to mid 1800s, the United States expanded rapidly. With this expansion,
the United States sought out new areas for trade commerce. With Britain and other
countries heavily involved in China, the U.S. searched for another of trade within the
region. President Millard Fillmore dispatched Commodore Matthew C. Perrywith a
letter demanding Japan to open their ports for commerce. Upon the first arrival,
Americans were great with a completely new experience for people. Some people
considered found the Japanese s culture to be repulsive while others were very
fascinated. This paper discusses the experiences of two Americans who visited Japan
during the Meiji Periodcompared to initial experiences. There were numerous reasons
why the United Stateshad an interest in forming diplomatic relations with Japan. The
opening of China s ports for commerce along with the new acquisition of a
California made the United States want to expand its influence in the world. One of
the most abundant resources needed was coal. With steam ships replacing sailing
ships, the United States had to establish a coaling station for refuel. With the heavy
influence of the British over in China, Japan made for the perfect geographic
location. America was involved in whaling for their oil.
Prior to Commodore s Expedition to Japan, there were preconceptions of the type of
people they were. American sailors left stranded on the island of Japan were typically
imprisoned. This inhumane treatment

China is known for their interesting history, traditions, geography, and more. Have
you ever been curious about China s history, traditions, geography, and more? If you
are curious then this is a perfect thing to read!
Let s begin with history in China. In the Prehistoric Times original humans began
activity in the Paleolithic Times, and early culture and society forming. The Xia
Dynasty was the first dynasty made, and was established by Qi (son of Yu the
Great). It was a country made up of different tribes. The Shang Dynasty was
established by the leader Tang, was also ruled by 31 rulers. Then, it became a
society based on slavery. The Zhou Dynasty originated from the Zhou clan. By the
11th Century BC, this clan had become very powerful and had extended
throughout the present Shaanxi and Gansu Provinces. Lasting from the 11th
century BC to 771 BC, the Western Zhou was established by King Wu. This
dynasty included the reigns of 13 emperors and played a very important role in
Chinese history. With the death of King You, the last king of the Western Zhou
Dynasty, the Eastern Zhou Dynasty began. Xuan Jiu, the son of King You,
established the dynasty in 770 BC. The Western Han (206BC 24AD) was regarded
as the first unified and powerful empire in Chinese history. Lasting from 206 BC to
24 AD, it was established by Liu Bang. Regarded as a continuation of the Western
Han (206 BC 24 AD), the Eastern Han (25 AD 220 AD) was established by Liu

architect and engineer of the high Renaissance who employ unique influence on the
development of the western world. Michelangelo was one of the best artists in the
Western world. He had a moody personality matched today s image of the
unpredictable artistic genius. Michelangelofocused his expressive purpose on the
human personality. Also he liked to concentrate on each part of the body when he
started working. The body was something beautiful and impressive to Michelangelo.
Yet,it was not only the body what appealed Michelangelo s attention, but also
concentration on its spiritual and philosophical importance. For example, in one of

The Truth Behind Animals in Captivity
Animal activists documentaries and incidents have recently brought up the question
of weather or not animals should be held in captivity for human entertainment or
conservation. A series of recent events has the general pubic asking them selves if
animals should be allowed to be in captivity. On February 24, 2010 Tilikum, a
12,000 pound killer whale held at Sea World Orlando, dragged trainer Dawn
Brancheau to the bottom of the tank during their daily show performance Dine with
Shamu, killing her. This was not the first time Tilikum had killed one of his trainer,
in 1991 and 1999 he was involved in similar incidents that unfortunately claimed the

The Humane Society conducted a study in 2009 and found some of the negative
side effects on marine mammals in captivity. In the wild dolphin and whales can
spend up to 80% of their time in the ocean depths and the remaining 20% of their
time at the oceans surface (Marine). Because of the shallow and small tanks they
spend more time on the surface causing skin problems. This also caused their dorsal
fins on top to collapse without the support of the ocean water gravity pulls the fins
over. In the wild a dorsal fin collapse happens in approximately 1% of killer whale
and in captivity all male and most female whales experience it. Most animals are put
into cages much smaller than their natural habitat restricting their natural instincts to
roam around. Confiding animals to a single area could also causes unsanitary
conditions to arise if the animals reproduce quickly since they would all be close to

The Triton Fountain By Gian Lorenzo Bernini
The Triton Fountain was specially made for Pope Urban VIII Barberini by Gian
Lorenzo Bernini. The fountain is placed at the center of the piazza; the fountain
represents the God of Sea with anthropomorphic body and huge fish tail, kneeling
on an open shell supported by the tails of four dolphins. The dolphins, leaning
towards each of the four cardinal directions, open their mouths to swallow the water
of the surrounding pool, telling us that they drink up all the waters of the world. The
fins of the dolphins clutch the crown of Urban VIII, with papal tiara, keys of St.
Peter, and Barberini bees. The Triton as the subject of this fountain is a very
interesting choice. According to many historical sources, PopeUrban VIII was a very
talented poet, and he was very well known for his pursuits in this field. Triton was
someone who achieved a sacred unity with nature and literature. And as we can see
from the monument, the Triton was an appropriate public monument to Pope Urban s
distinguished literary accomplishments. On the other hand, this explanation of the
connection between Triton and Pope Urban is not effective, and unquestionably does
not give us full information. American art historian John Beldon Scott has established
that Urban was suspicious of pagan imagery for fear it might lead the faithful astray.
This suggests that the Triton Fountain may imply to something more significant than
just the simple literary symbol. Also, it is important to mention that at least three
Pros And Cons Of Using CMOS
. EXPERIENCE WITH CMOS IMAGE SENSORS (AFTER THE YEAR 1990)
MOS technology has shown promising results for electrode preparation but has
certain limitations of decrease in threshold voltage due to mismatch in charge
components, and thinner gate oxide [114]. CMOS technology has not only reduced
these problems but also gained popularity over its counter parts of microphotodiodes
and CCD [17]. Unlike the initial trials of obtaining the phosphenes stimulation,
placement of retinal tissues, use of appropriate biomaterials, electrode impedance
characterization, choice of right patients, researchers had started working in feature
enhancement of retinal implants using the CMOS technology especially after 1997.

Scaling of number of electrodes using digital pads with flexible design had increased
the reliability, testability and safety of the epiretinal implant proposed in [123] with
high innocuousness.
The path changing journey of CMOS APS had started in 2008, when Joachim N.
Burghartz et al [05] implanted the first automated imager chip into patient s eye,
following were the major contributions reported:
Low cost and disposable photodiode made of Thin Film on CMOS (TFC).
High dynamic range (HDR).
Extended range of 120dB utilizing the linear to logarithmic transformation of
photocurrent in to sense signal voltage with compromise on contrast and brightness
[124].
Later on counting method to enhance the scalability of the implanted device was the
novel technique suggested in [125], all the desired features like high dynamic range,
higher speed, lower cost and good sensitivity at the cost of complexity was achieved
with the time domain counting scheme.
A novel approach of 0.8V 4096 pixel integrated sense and stimulus CMOS image
sensor with balanced current mode stimulator and photon to biphasic current
converter was proposed in [126]. The proposed approach utilized the three operating
modes i.e. test mode, programming mode and implant mode for obtaining different
results like verification, electrical stimulation and fully functional chip operation. The
authors claimed the higher resolution of 4096 pixel with power

In this media assignment I shall be analyzing and comparing the similarities and
differences of two famous directors film versions of Great Expectations . The two
directors are David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron. David Lean s version was more
popular and well known than Alfonso Cuaron s because Lean was the first director to
actually direct Great Expectations . This made it more difficult for Alfonso Cuaron
because he had to bring the film up to date by making the film more modern and

This is revealing to the audience that the film fits into the horror genre and is giving
the audience clues about what the film will include, such as an ominous atmosphere
and scenes of violence and gore. Lean has created this mood and theme so that the
audience would want to know what the film actually contains, whether it is horror or
drama.
David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron are using the different techniques to keep the
audience interested in the movie. The soundtrack of both versions is different
because Alfonso Cuaron has played music throughout his opening frames. He has
introduced sound effects such as waves that give the audience a pleasant sound to
their ears; this same effect is employed with seagulls. The music that is actually
played has a joyful and happy mood, which encourages the audience to think that the
film is a non violent film. But when Magwitch appears from underneath the water in
the tenth frame and grabs Pip, at this point the music changes from joyful and happy
to dramatic and shocking. Cuaron deliberately did this to shock and alarm the
audience from a happy and cheerful atmosphere to an explicit and up tempo
atmosphere, this technique also keeps you interested in the film.
On the other hand David Lean has only played music in his opening
Car Dependency In The United States
Car dependency is one of the most important problems in the United States.
Owning a personal car is mandatory in most small towns. All roads are designed
for cars without pedestrian ways, and so much of the land is reserved for parking
lots. Pedestrian friendly cities rates are really low when it is compared with car
friendly ones.
As people have difficulties to reaching services and activities without having a car,
owning a car has its disadvantages and problems also. The problem s origin date
back to the 1920s. While cities were being planned, overall design was based on car
usage, but did not account for growth in that population. Urban sprawl added to
increased car usage, which was not taken into account during the design phase, and

First, mass motorization and increased road standards were results of inappropriate
urban planning. Every two households in the US had one registered automobile on
average in the mid 1930s, which is earlier than many European countries.
According to this high rate of motorization, high road standards were developed by
planners and engineers quickly, and cities adopted to this pattern easily. After the
mortgage policies in the 1950s (1), the interstate systems destroyed urban
neighborhoods and created divided urban systems by using wide big roads, so
urban sprawl increased. Also, low vehicle taxes and gasoline prices reduced the
cost of driving, and increased this car travel demand over time. Additionally, the
government subsidized most of the gas taxes, tolls, and registration fees, and the
result was the lack of public transportation in many US cities. Especially after World
War II, privately owned transit systems increased ticket prices, cut services, and
prompted people to own a private car. In 1970s, some of the US cities started to
promote walking and cycling with appropriate amenities (1), but it was not enough to
change people s travel behaviors. Lastly, maybe most importantly, zoninglaws do not
allow mixed land use planning which facilitates shorter trips between amenities in
most of the US cities. Zoning laws, also requires a minimum number of parking lots
per usage, rather than the maximum numbers of limited parking such as most

Miami is one of the most popular cities visited by all types of tourists from around
the world. Visitors mainly travel by air and arrive at Miami International Airport. In
2016, Miami welcomed 15.7 million overnight visitors (i.e. tourists) from around the
world. Those tourists spent $25 billion, with 70% of that money coming from
international visitors (Mody, 2017). Many people also embark on cruises from
PortMiami to destinations around the world. Whether the visitor is coming to spend
a few days in the city or is driving through for a cruise, most tourists prefer to visit

Bacteria On The Brain By Emily Eakin
In Bacteria on the Brain By Emily Eakin, she writes about the ethics surrounding a
doctor who attempts to save the lives of patients with brain tumors by using his own
alternative methods. In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, the author writes about Victor
and his creature s attempts to expand science, and answer moral questions concerning
life and death. Regarding the substance of the article, Neurosurgeon Dr. Paul
Muizelaar and his controversial treatment of three patients suffering from terminal
braincancer engenders serious ethical debate. On one hand, Muizelaar epitomizes a
man of brilliance and ingenuity, driven by the desire to correct his patients otherwise
hopeless situations. On the other hand, a man filled with hubris who discounted the
risks in his pursuit of success. Given the evidence present in the text of Frankenstein,
Mary Shelley would contend that Muizelaar s actions were innovative and driven
by his desire to save the lives of his patients. Shelley values the dedication to expand
the knowledge of humankind as well as life and the avoidance of death at all costs.
She often references the sciences, and the idea of pushing sciencefurther, for
example, when Victor creates life. He had worked hard for nearly two years, for the
sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body (35) and succeeds. In doing so he
attempts to expand the sciences with his discovery, and achieve the impossible.
Shelley highlights this dedication to broaden science when framing
Gender Differences In Football And Other Sports
Football and other sports should be abled to be played by girls too. Girls in
highschool who want to play football should be aloud. It could be a boy and girl
sport. It is unreasonable to say girls can t play football with boys.
My point is that females can be just as strong, if not stronger than males. The
females should play knowing that they might get hurt, but boys do the same thing.
Girls are always considered lower class than boys. If and when girls begin to play
with boys on sports team girls would have helmets and padding as protective gear.
Girls have their rights and can choose if they want to play football of other sports
with boys or not. Boys should not complain about this fact. Difference in gender is
not a reason for girls

Argumentative Essay About A Soccer Game
I happened to be on outdoor sandy field experiencing different mixed emotions as I
saw people with several face expression at the end of the big soccer game. It was
exhausting and unforgiving game that got some players injured, and caused the bad
sportsmanship to take place between the coaches, players, and fans. Our fans and
our rival s fans fought each other, and they threw stuff across the stadium as if they
were dealing with a gigantic wild animal. Some of the playerscouldn t fully focus on
their soccer match due to their divided attention, and some of them were terrified
by the fan s unnecessary acts. Whenever I think about this moment, I cry and smile
at same time because we finally understood the meaning of fair play of soccer, and
happy ending of our game occurred as a result of that. I knew before the game that
the unsportsmanlike conduct would happen, it really did as I thought, but besides
our soccer game s dirty side, it appeared to be more captivating by the way it was
played than any other game. I believe that there were three causes for the
ungentlemanly behavior that we faced during the tournament. Both my team and the
rival team fought to death in order to win the important soccer league because
neither of the teams made it to the final game before. They always face each other
during the knockout games which made them rivals. Finally, the beauty of the game
also had an effect for why the match took place to be played dirty.

Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, An

While Slavery was against human nature and while Abolitionists believed in
ending the practice of slavery, the South had their own reasons why slavery was
needed in America and how basically they supported pro slavery. For instance,
some arguments for slavery followed this so called logic: Sudden end to the slave
economy would have had a profound and killing economic impact in the South
where reliance on slave labor was the foundation of their economy. If all the slaves
were freed, there would be widespread unemployment and chaos. And by
comparison with the poor of Europe and the workers in the Northern states, that
slaves were better cared for (ushistory.org). But in a section from, Narrative of the
Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, written by him, Douglass describes
some of the brutality that he had witnessed. The overseer s name was Plummer.
Mr. Plummer was a miserable drunkard, a profane swearer, and a savage monster.
He always went armed with a cowskin and a heavy cudgel. I have known him to cut
and slash the woman s heads so horribly, that even master would be enraged at his
cruelty, and would threaten to whip him if he did not mind himself. Master, however,
was not a humane slaveholder (Douglass 44). This shows the brutality that even
female slaves endured and while the Maser may have showed some sense against the
cruelty that the slaves faced, it wasn t enough to say that they too were also cruel.
Just putting aside the inhumanity depicted in true

Safety and security: Both triple pane replacement windows and double pane
replacement windows offer security features. Some companies promote triple pane
window solutions as more intruder resistant than double pane windows. Three pane
configurations are stronger than windows with fewer panels; therefore not as easy to
break as styles with fewer panes.
But, there are less expensive double pane solutions. For example, installing heat
tempered glass, which is four times as strong as traditional glass panels, is an
option for areas of your home where you want a stronger glazing choice. You can
also design windows with patterned glass to increase privacy and recessed locks that
make access more difficult. Neither double pane nor triple pane windows are

Essay on Nickel and Dimed
Seeing Eye to Eye with Barbara Ehrenreich s article Nickel and Dimed.
In her article, Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich says that many people earn far
less than they need to live on ( 270.) A good percent of high school graduates move
right on to college. They graduate college and then they usually move on to make a
good amount of money to live a satisfying life. However, college is not made for
everyone, and what would our world be with only professionals? I agree with
Ehrenreich that the minimum wage is too low because, while people with open
opportunities earn a better future for their families, many like my own, are fighting to
get through on a daily basis due to our economy.
Ehrenreich mentions in her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Ehrenreich states employers will look at that $30,000 figure [...] and see
nothing but bankruptcy ahead (270.) This makes it hard for employers to pay a
living wage. They are afraid of their employees declaring bankruptcy while
working for them. Well, how are people supposed to make the money if the
employers won t hire them in the first place? I understand that people that do not
go to college should not and probably could not make as much money as someone
that graduated college. Some people have a family before even graduating high
school, let alone college. But why is this any reason to keep these people from
getting a well paying job. This was also a problem for my mother. After working at
her job for about two years they told her that she could not move on in the field
unless she started going to college. Of course my mom took advantage of this
ultimatum and went to college. She was lucky to find a job that would work with
and around her schedule. She is now going to college part time and working full
time. She probably won t graduate for at least eight years, but she is very
determined and I know that she will do it because she knows that it is the best for
her and out family.

Negative Effects Of Factory Farming
Imagine walking into a supermarket and walking over to the meat section, picking
up a steak for dinner that night and not knowing how that steak got packaged and
in that supermarket. That is a very common scenario for many people living in the
United States that have no idea where their food comes from. The U.S. has faced
many different expansions on how food is processed and the types of food that are
consumed. Over the years, more processed foods are being introduced to the market
and therefore the consumer s diets are being affected. Because the demand of food is
being increased over the years, factory farminghas become more popular because it is
an easier way to meet the needs of consumers. FactoryFaming is defined as a system
of rearing livestockusing intensive methods, by which poultry, pigs, or cattle are
confined indoors under strictly controlled conditions. . It is a massive industry that
gains millions of revenue a year, and therefore it is one of the largest types of
businesses in the United States. Along with the massive amount of revenue that it
creates because of this process, there are negative factors that overall affects the
common good, for example not caring for the well being of animals and the
consumers, as well as damaging the environment. Since the negative effects are
greater than the only positive effect that these factory farms have, the question; is the
monetary value greater than the well being of the living and the environment.

The Nazi Of The Third Reich And The Notorious Nazi Party
The empire of the Third Reich and the notorious Nazi Party will forever go down
in history as one of the most brutal and evil government organizations of the 20th

the purest of all races, these ideas became rampant all across the country, and many
citizens believed that this horrible wrongness could be justified, it would be for the
greater good of the true Aryan people. The Nazis sent millions of innocent minorities

These ideas were born into a time when the very concepts of what race was and
how we differed as human beings was just starting to be explored. For centuries
people had lived in an age of ignorance, but that time was coming to pass. The age
of religious hysteria of the Great Awakening was slowly fading, while the time of
science and engineering was developing. People knew very little about the world
around them, and wanted to become educated to the theories of science. People
knew that different races existed, but wanted to know why. God had indeed created
them differently, but for what purpose? This question and more sparked society s
curiosity into the new topics of race and origins. Scientists were very intrigued about
the development of the human and devoted many years of study. One of the most
famous researchers was naturalist Charles Darwin, who wrote The Descent of Man
in 1871. Darwin compared man to animals, and that in order to produce healthy
offspring, the fittest could only survive to pass on the desired traits. With savages, the
weak in body or mind are soon eliminated; and those that survive commonly exhibit a
vigorous state of health. Darwin also agreed that races were indeed different species
of the human race. Races had ...many differences in structure and constitution. .

The Philosophy Of Knowing And Learning
Knowing and learning can be interpreted in many different ways, but my philosophy
of knowing and learning is based on my understanding through the personal
experience in the tutoring situation. As a Tutor for students who were 9 years old,
majority of the time was spent reading to develop their English. An aspect that
impacted the students learningprogress tremendously was the tutor s responsibility to
understand the student s capability, needs and interest to support their learning
progress. When tutoring the students, there were some theories that were appropriate
to aid the students in reading and influenced the tutor s techniques employed to
support the students learning. The philosophers that influenced my tutoring
techniques were Etienne Wenger, Jerome Bruner, Albert Bandura
, Ivan Pavlov,
Burrhus Frederic Skinner, Jean Lave, Wolfgang Kohler and Lev Vygotsky
. Wenger s
social theory believed that adding meaning and interest into an activity encourages
learning (Lave Wenger,1991). The Gestalt Approach influenced Kohler s idea
where the student would need to know the basic elements before being able to learn
and acquire more knowledge (Phillips Soltis, 2009). To build up new ideas from the
initial basic elements, Scaffolding by Bruner and Modelling by Bandura were the
two learning strategies utilized to support the student s learning (Nalliah Idris, 2014).

Outside of these hours, in severe cases, an Emergency PFA can be applied for,
only to last until closing time of the Family Court s next business day. As stated by
the Philadelphia Courts PFA brochure, if a victim is also denied an emergency PFA,
they once again must wait until the next business day to contact a separate
department for assistance (Family Law Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association,
2009). Furthermore, the brochure disclaims that the victim should be prepared to
wait your turn , eluding to the fact that the PFA form is about 24 pages, therefore,
may take time to complete with professional assistance (Family Law Section of the

is enforced through the police and the violation of its contents may result in up to 6
months prison time and/or a $1000 fine (Family Law Section of the Philadelphia Bar

vulnerable to attack prior to the arrival of law enforcement. Additionally, studies show
that legally reporting abuse can often increase the risk of abuse by angering the

perfect solution might be to hide the victim through some sort of program similar to
the Witness Protection Program, or constant surveillance, but it would be much too

Speech About Littering
Since as far back as I can remember, my parents always taught me to properly
dispose of my trash. As I grew up, I, however, realized that many others did not
receive or appreciate the same lesson I was taught as a child. Trash and garbage
can be nasty items, and the improper disposal of garbage in public places and our
environment is a serious problem disguised as a small issue. Personally, littering
angers and disgusts me. The idea that someone is careless enough to throw trash
literally anywhere is concerning; additionally, when you take a deeper look,
littering is accompanied by some major impacts. Littering is a momentous issue
with major impacts that are typically unseen by many people. Littering is a major
issue that plagues society. Personally, littering disgusts me. Each and every one of
us have seen the trash and garbage thrown about in our community. In Peachtree
City in particular, we are lucky to have a relatively clean city; however, in many
cities and small towns across the nation suffer from serious littering problems.
Outside of our city limits, it is not uncommon to see streets and road sides covered
in trash and garbage. For example, my grandmother lives in rural Georgia about
twenty to thirty minutes outside of the city limits of Athens. Her road which only
contains about four or five houses is often littered with the trash and garbage of her
neighbors and people passing through. Almost every week, she will take her own
time to pick up and clean the

Compare And Contrast Paths Of Glory And All Quiet On

World War 1 has been a famous war throughout history. Many films have been
made surrounding it, sometimes realistic and sometimes not so much. Paths of
Glory and All Quiet on the Western Front were two such movies that depicted the
Great War. Each movie is unique in their own sense and although no movie will
completely convey the harsh reality of the war some movies are better than others.
Depending on when and what year the war would have looked vastly different to
different soldiers. Some would only know the reality of the trench while others
would recognize tanks rolling over the ground which were impenetrable to normal
gun fire. Which side of the war one was on would have also lead to different views,
as in when one side is winning the other is losing, and when morale is up on one
side normally morale is down on the other. In the history of war there are many
different aspects and some similarities. The Great War introduced the automatic gun
and the idea of trench warfare. The Great War had more casualties by artillery and it
was said No flesh or a bone could live above ground in the battlefield . Everything
was fought across No man s Land . Many advancements led to soldiers hiding
behind a wall of dirt in the ground which really changed up the game. Fighting this
way seemed more dangerous due to the automatic guns and it was more effective
than the U.S. Civil War where everything was fought face to face only a few yards
away. World War I

Throughout my life, I have impacted the lives of few people. Growing up around
non Christian relatives it was hard to express my faith around people who never
heard about God. Although it was a challenge for me, I was able to reach out to
one my closest cousins. My cousin s name was ironically Christian. Christian had
a troubled childhood, one that seemed like a nightmare. He was raised by a single
mother, since his dad was fatally shot by a rival cartel in Mexico. Christian would
get in and out of trouble at school, to the point where he was expelled for having
possession of marijuana. He was then forced to go to a military school for kids that
had bad grades or bad behavior. During that time, I would talk to him occasionally
to see what he was up to. I knew he was making a lot of bad choices, but I never
judged him for it. I was just waiting for the right day to invite him to church with
me. At that time, I did it because I knew he was lonely and still hurting from the
lost of his father. I figured that it would be a thousand times better for him to be at
church than being up to no good. Surprisingly, Christian accepted the invitation.
Due to that choice he made, his life was forever changed. Christian actually liked
the feeling of being at church and told me that he wanted to continue to come
along with me every Saturday. He told me that being in church was the only place
that can fill an emptiness he had deep inside. Sadly, Christian came with me to
church a few more times, but strayed away by some friends who were bad
influences. I knew it was going to happen in a matter of time, but I thought his
absence would only be temporary. Few years passed, Christian then invites me
over to hang out. As we talked, he brought up that he wanted to start going to
church again. He said that during his absence he still believed in God, but his
girlfriend and his friends kept him from going. I was really shocked, but at the same
time was very happy. Just over a week ago,
Post Negotiation Analysis Les Florets Essay
Post negotiation Analysis of Les Florets Case
This case particularly resonates with me because it highlights the problems that arise
when two individuals have reference points which do not overlap. An impasse was
reached between myself (VP of operations for Les Florets) and the Restaurant owner
and this was primarily due to the fact that we both had reference points with a ceiling
which we felt we could not exceed.
Going into this negotiation as the VP of operations my goal was to primarily succeed
in buying the restaurant. Prior to starting the negotiation, i identified several certain
non monetary concessions that could be made to sweeten the deal such as paying a
percentage of travel expenses, and also allowing the restaurant owner ... Show more

I explained that one of the primary reasons why the restaurant seemed to be doing
so well was because of the brand name of Les Florets and that we could just easily
open another restaurant across the street if we wanted to but that we wanted a
semblance of continuity for our customers . Although I expected this ploy to work
it seemed to make things worse as the owner retorted that he had several offers on
the table and could just easily sell the restaurant or any one and let that person
worry about keeping the Les Florets name and maintaining its profitability and that
won t be his problem. At this point I was in a dilemma , having resorted to strong
arm tactics and failed miserably (primarily because the owner wanted to test my
resolve) was there a way to get back into favor?
There were several factors that culminated into the ultimate inability to reach an
agreement. Firstly, was the differing priorities of both parties , while I was focused
on reaching a deal and considered an impasse to be a failure , the other party was
more focused on money and all the benefits offered paled in comparison as
mentioned by the owner compared to the money foregone. Secondly, the owner
seemed to want the property independently valued and then sell at this price.
Knowing that the valuation was more than I could offer, I could not agree to this and

Jefferson And Anti-Federalism
The United States, in the nineteenth century, had established themselves as
independent state, with gaining expansion of land, rights, and freedoms in the
western part of the world after succeeding from the British tyrannical rule. However,
the United States had been cogitating on whether a federalist view, a strong national
government limiting state s powers, or anti federalist view, opposing the constitution
and pushing for state s rights, should rule the government of the new independent
state. Given the conditions of the early nineteenth century in the United States,
Thomas Jefferson, an anti federalist, had a more valid philosophy of government, than
federalist Alexander Hamilton. Thomas Jefferson believed that a weaker national

and cultural freedoms, for which with a strong national government, these
freedoms would be taken away with another tyrannical ruling (Writing). Jefferson
states, To take a simple step beyond the boundaries thus specially drawn around the
powers of the Congress is to take possession of boundless fields of power, no
longer susceptible of any definition (Document A). Jefferson explains that the
powers of Congress are boundless, and these limitless powers could be abused by
the highest levels of authority, like they had been by the King of England. He
followed the idea that the constitution should be read strictly, so the government
would not have too much power (Thomas). Alexander Hamilton s views of the
nineteenth century conflicted with those of Thomas Jefferson, as he explains, ...
and the laws of the United States made in pursuance of it, and all treaties made...
under their authority shall be the supreme law of the land. He believed that if the
power given to congress were harmful, they would not be given powers in the first
place. But, he failed to realize that a strong national government over the people is
what led to the position of the American society before the succession of the British
rule. Moreover, The Sedition Act of July
Understanding Early Childhood Educational Programs
Understanding Early Childhood Educational Programs: Young Children Education
and development plays an important role in young children s lives and children
that participate in an early educational program set the foundation to achieve more
success for post secondary education; therefore by enforcing an early learning
foundation will better enrich children s lives. Understanding: Montessori
Methodology In the Montessori methodology, all curriculum areas arranged into
five areas: practical life, sensorial, language, math, and cultural. Each activity is
carefully sequenced that is has a methodical, engaging logic the purpose is to help
children develop problem solving skills in real practical ways, (Johnson, 2006).
While engaged in discovering autonomy children displayed a joyous and happy
nature when taking the initiative to explore new things. In the practical life setting
is the heartbeat, so to speak of the Montessori, (Johnson, 2006), because respecting a
child s desire to exercise independency, and build s the child s confidence elevates
pride in themselves. Understanding: HighScope Approach The HighScope approach
teaches children how to use words to express emotions. Children learn that words
have meaning (HighScope Preschool, 2014), and have as much impact as touching.
As the teacher acknowledges the child is frustrated, but remains calm and sensitive to
the child. The child learns to self regulate their behavior, even if the anger is
warranted, but how
The American Red Cross (ARC)
The American Red Cross (ARC) has long faced multiple ethical dilemmas
associated with various aspects of its operations. The Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) has been closely scrutinizing the organization related to its blood donation
services (Ferrell, Fraedrich, Ferrell, 2015). In Canada, over 1,000 people; mostly
hemophiliacs dependent on life saving blood clotting products, have been infected by
HIV tainted transfusions and more than 500 Canadian hemophiliacs have
subsequently died of AIDS as a result of contaminated blood from the Red Cross
(Grace, 1995). These accusations were related to mismanagement of screenings and
blood collections as well as failing to discard potentially unsafe donations. Many
speculate that these issues arose... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the debacle with the blood, they development and implementation of
standardized and more uniform history questionnaires to help to ensure that they are
maintaining the same standards across all collection sites (Zou, Eder, Musavi, Notari
IV, Fang, Dodd (2007). The changes that were made to the Code of Business Ethics
and Conduct in January of 2007 now requires that all employees read and sign the
two page document stating and acknowledging understanding of the company s
expectations. They also implemented a 24 hour anonymous call line where anyone
can call to voice concerns about the organization. They also published an Ethics
Rules and Policies statement that outlines the details about how business will be
conducted regarding business funds, property, allocation of time, addressing
conflicts of interest, recordkeeping and the handling of media inquiries (Ferrell,
Fraedrich, Farrell, 2015). While those are all effective tools to manage what has
happened in the past, the ARC will also need to ensure that they are not allowing
anything to damage their reputation going forward. To do this, they will need to be
diligent in their hiring practices; ensuring that they are following the same policy
and procedures for each employee and that expectations are laid out regarding
ethical behavior from the very beginning of employment. They will need to, at least
yearly, revisit ethical responsibility topics with all employees to keep those skills
fresh and on the forefront of everyone s mind. It will be imperative for the company
to continue to build itself back up from its previous failures and to ensure that they

Memes and Life
We have three replicators 1. Genes 2. Memes 3. Fremes (I have called them that).
These three replicators are selfish in that they contiuously try to replicate.
In the book by Susan Blackmore, it is mentioned that the reason why we cannot stop
thinking is because there are too many memes in our memory that can find their
place in the brain. Hence, we continuously keep on thinking, but at the cost of higher
energy requirements. Indeed, thinking utilizes more brain power which in turn
requires more oxygen for which more blood flow is required. Hence, in a nutshell,
the more we think the more energy we consume and the more the genetically weaker
our genes become as we are wasting more energy. What we see here that these...

Hence, let us see how ideally we should be able to control these memes.
We need to control the gene replication. For this, the simple idea is not to produce
offsprings. Simple.
We need to control the meme replication. For this, we need to try to stop thinking.
Difficult, but practice makes us perfect, or so they say.
We need to control freme replication. For this, let me take you on this concept of a
time machine. The photon clock example. Yes. As our speed increases, the value
of the time decreases. This is all hypothetical and yes, impossible too. Later, I will
explain why. Nevertheless, the analogy is interesting. We are saying that the longer
the time the lesser number of ticks and hence smaller the value of time. This way.
So the longer the time, the more the control as you could possibly do things more
dexterously. So in order to control fremes, we need to decrease the meme activity
and increase the freme activity, i.e. decrease the value of time as frequency = 1/ Time.
So, what do we collect from all this?
In order to reach a higher state we should ideally be away from the greed of
This is what the ideal life of a saint is explained in the Jain text. Indeed, there are
various levels of spirituality explained in Jainism. You should not have a family, go to
an isolated place where you do not have anyone telling you things or you telling them
things. And then, concentrate and meditate continuously to
Impacts of an Aging Population
The impacts of an aging population on a country
An aging population is where the population of a country is of a high elderly
dependence. There are three main ways to split the ways they are sorted and these are
Social, the ways in which the elderly population affect the people around them,
political, the ways in which the elderly population affect the politics of a country, and
finally, economic, the ways in which the elderly population affect the wealth of the
country.
Social impacts can be negative or advantageous, an advantage would be the fact
that in a study on volunteering 35% of people aged 75 or over regularly give up
their free time to help others. This is beneficial as it helps many people, this also

This will save the government a small percentage of money but not a great amount.
The pension age for women is going to be raised from 60 to 65 between 2010 and
2020 and the pension age for both men and women will be raised to 68 in 2044. The
government also plans to get rid of the fixed retirement age, meaning that employers
will no longer be able to dismiss staff at the age of 65. The government also plans
to make it easier for older people to get jobs by controlling age discrimination. This
will get older people into work but not for a great deal of time and therefore just
prolongs the issue rather than solving it. The UK have in place a replacement
migration scheme, this is where younger workers from overseas are used to fill
skill gaps in the UK workforce. The UK encourages foreigners to come and work
here. Around 80% of immigrants from new EU countries in 2004 were 34 or
under, they come to work and in doing so fill skill gaps and pay taxes. This greatly
increases the government s income and helps pay for state pensions. It also reduces
the dependency ratio largely. However, it does cause friction between the British
people and the immigrants, as there is a general distrust and feeling of malicious
intent.
In Sweden, there is a Pro natalist policy. This is where they promote a higher
fertility rate and make it easier for couples to have
Calculus 2 Research Paper
Welcome to calculus II. Calculus is a wonderful subject with very nice application in
different area of natural science. It is one of the important achievements of human
thought developed in thousands of years. This course Calculus II is another building
of calculus after Calculus I and is deigned to develop the concept integration
techniques and their physical applications, sequence and series, and linear algebra.
Here, you ll learn not only to compute with these objects, but also what they mean.
And, how they are useful in the engineering, biological, social, and physical sciences.

The big important question is, what do you need in order to be successful in this
course? There is one thing that you need a lot of time to get success ... Show more

Another branch of mathematics which has nice applications in business, engineering,
computer science and many fields of applied mathematics. We first introduce the
concept of matrices, their determinants. Then, there will be algebra of matrices such
as addition, multiplication and finding inverses. Next, we see some application of
matrix algebra with some real world problems. Finally, we move to linear
transformation of vectors, and then calculation of eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the
matrices.
There will be four class tests after completing each of the three sections and a
combine test for sequence and series and power series. Eventually, when we re
done with all five chapters, we ll get to the final exam and, if you make it to the
end, you will be done. It is by no means an easy path to get to the end of this course;
it is a difficult subject and is only learned by means of hard work. You are going to
have to work hard and persevere to get to the end. But I am confident that together,
we can make it.
Greek Architecture Symbolism
Ancient Greek architecture was very intricately made and well thought out. The
Greeks used different methods and reasonings behind their architecture because
they made sure that their pieces were exquisitely made to represent the things they
thought were important. They valued their Gods and their worship of the Gods. It
was important for them to always represent or have symbolic meaning behind all
of their architectural designs. There are many hidden symbols that are involved in
Greek architecture like trees, trophies, leaves, hair, and sacrifices to name a few.
Greek architecture includes these hidden symbols to worship Gods, and to
represent culture in their pieces. First, Greek architecture was mainly created to
give respect to Gods and create worship areas for the Gods. Representing and
respecting Greek Gods appropriately was considered important to the Greek people
during this time. A very early Greek architectural example of showing respect
towards the Gods, was when trees were used as the first temples as a place of
worship. As expressed by Pliny, The Trees formed the first temples of the Gods.
(Pliny). Trees held a valuable position to the Greeks because they were classified as
sacred and even representational to certain Gods. The Greeks believed that trees had
relation to certain Gods. For example, The God Zeuss sacred tree was the oak tree,
while, the olive tree was the Goddess Athena s sacred tree. The olive tree was the
first temple for Athena, which was
Michael S. Harper s We Assume
Young Hee Somemoto
We Assume that this is an Elegy When looking at Helen Vendler s thirteen steps to
describe at a poem, there are a few points that would fit Michael S. Harper s We
Assume: On the Death of Our Son Reuben Masai Harper. However, the points that fit
the poem the most are number seven: games with the skeleton and number eight:
language. First, Vendler defines the skeleton as the emotional curve on which the
whole poem is arranged. In this case, Harper writes about his new born son, Reuben
Masai Harper, who only lived for twenty eight hours even the title includes the word
death, so it is safe to assume that this poem is about a father mourning for his son.
Therefore, since the emotional curve is mourning for the death of his ... Show more

Harper includes a lot of scientific and medical terms, such as isolette, pure oxygen,
twin thick windows of the nursery, and the sterile hands/ drank chemicals in and
out/ from lungs opaque with mucus,/ pumped your stomach,/ eeked the
bicarbonate in crooked, green winged veins, out in a plastic mask. These terms
tend to create the idea that the child who is being treated will be cured, especially
since modern medicine is viewed to prolong life and cure the incurable (or at least
manage the disease). Therefore, when Harper incorporates medicine into his poem
it naturally brings about hope that the child will survive. Overall, Harper does a
brilliant job in describing the emotions of a parent who loses a child. The hope that
their child will be okay in the hands of doctors and the despair when they find out
that modern medicine has failed them. Also, the regret that a parent feels after losing
a child. Even though Harper does play with the emotional curve of an elegy by not
having solace at the end, it can be argued that he is able to entirely capture the
emotion of a parent because many parents do not come to accept their child s

Essay Isben s A Dolls House
Nora Helmer as a Doll In Isben s, A Dolls House Nora, the protagonist is treated
like a doll the property of Torvald Helmer. In Act I, there are many clues that hint at
the kind of marriage Nora and Torvald have. It seems that Nora is a doll controlled
by Torvald. She relies on him for everything, from movements to thoughts, much
like a puppet that is dependent on its puppet master for all of its actions. The most
obvious example of Torvald s physical control over Nora is his re teaching her the
tarantella. Nora pretends that she needs Torvald to teach her every move in order to
relearn the dance. This act shows her submissiveness to Torvald. After he teaches her
the dance, he proclaims quot; When I saw you dance the tarantella, like... Show more

When Nora responds by saying quot;Leave me, Torvald! Get away form me! I don
t want all this quot;(1530), Torvald asks quot;Aren t I your husband? quot;(1530).
By saying this, he is implying that one of Nora s duties as his wife is to physically
pleasure him at his command. Torvald also does not trust Nora with money, which
exemplifies Torvald s treating Nora as a child. On the rare occasion when Torvald
gives Nora some money, he is concerned that she will waste it on candy and pastry.
Nora s duties, in general, are restricted to caring for the children, doing housework,
and working on her needlepoint. A problem with her responsibilities is that her
most important obligation is to please Torvald, making her role similar to that of a
slave. When Torvald does not immediately offer to help Nora after Krogstad
threatens to expose her, Nora realizes that there is a problem. By waiting until after
he discovers that his social status will suffer no harm, Torvald reveals his true
feelings, which put appearance, both social and physical, ahead of the wife whom
he says he loves. Nora s personality changes from a two dimensional figure to a
fully developed and captivating woman who can independently take care of herself
and her family without the guiding hand of a man at her side; this is illustrated by
her handling of the debt crisis up to the point that her husband finds out. This
revelation is what prompts Nora to walk out on Torvald. When Torvald tries to

Catherine Howard Research Paper
For my research paper, I plan to write about the Boleyn/Howard family. I will be
focusing mainly on Henry VIII wives Anne Boleyn and her cousin Catherine
Howard. The time frame I look to examine is from the rise of Anne Boleyn and her
family to the fall of Catherine Howard and the aftermath of their executions and how
it affected the family left behind. I think that both the Boleyn s and Howard s were
very influential towards the middle and end of Henry s reign. Most prominent is
Anne Boleynwho has been polarized throughout history as either an innocently
executed wife or a malicious and ambitious she wolf who brought down Catholicism
in England. Whichever way you look at it Anne is one of his most remembered and
influential wives. For whatever... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Catherine s quick rise and fall from favor shows just how unstable Henry had really
become in his final years. How he had no problem in executing anyone who
betrayed him, even his 18 year old wife. Catherine also represents the Howards
final attempt to gain control and power in England by placing another Howard girl
on the throne. During his reign Henry was known to keep favorites and
handsomely reward those who pleased him. For this reason, early on the noble
families of England vied for Henry s attention and rewards by trying to make the
ladies in their families his mistresses. However, that strategy changed when Anne
went from being his mistress to becoming queen of England. This meant that they
weren t just playing for money and power but they were now fighting for a place
on the throne. This became increasingly more difficult after Anne s execution when
Henry showed that no one was safe and wining the throne was a dangerous play.
Still, families like the Seymour and the Howards tried to gain power this way. For
the most part, the Seymour succeeded in this endeavor by giving Henry what he
most desired, a male heir. The Howards however failed with Anne and her daughter
Elizabeth and then with Catherine who though young and fertile gave Henry no
children and was later discovered as an

(GE) and Honeywell Inc. has sparked considerable debate between US antitrust agencies, economists and scholars since the announcement of its unsuccessful attempt by the European Commission (EC). GE is a corporation active in aircraft engines, financial services, and transportation systems while Honeywell is a manufacturing company producing aerospace products and is the leading supplier for engine starters. Both parties are from the US. In Oct 2000, GE and Honeywell agreed to merge and Honeywell was to become a wholly owned subsidiary of GE. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) conducted thorough investigations and approved the merger with limited conditions (Platt Majoras,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There has been considerable debate amongst academics whether foreclosure would reduce competition or not. However, Bernheim and Whinston (1998)(cited in Lipczynski et al., 2005, p. 581) argue that there is no black and white; the effects of foreclosure will vary according to conditions Krattenmaker and Salop (1986) (cited in Lipczynski et al., 2005, p. 581) derived 3 conditions to ascertain if foreclosure harms competition. 1. Is the ability of excluded rivals to compete reduced? Competitors might face increasing costs when firms deliberately increase the price of supplies or when competitors are forced to bid for remaining inputs. However, this does not mean it will increase competitor s cost if supplies are available from alternative suppliers. 2. Is the market increased by exclusion? Firms may not necessarily gain market power if it has powerful competitors or if entry is possible. This may harm competitors but not necessarily competition. 3. Is the exclusion profitable? Profit increase from enhanced market power doesn t necessarily counterbalance the loss in revenue. *coloured sentences represent linkage of theory to the case. Vertical Merger; The case. • 4. The Battle Of Team Desobry At The Town Of Noville INTRODUCTION This mission command analysis evaluates the battle of Team Desobry at the town of Noville, Belgium. These events took place 18 19 December 1944, and later impacted the battle fought at Bastogne during World War II. It is the goal of this review to discuss and analyze three mission command principles displayed during this battle: Create shared understanding, exercise disciplined initiative, and the acceptance of prudent risk. One of the main characters that took part in this story was the 20th Armored Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division. The commanding officer of this element was Major William R. Desobry. During the events of World War II, the German forces were trying to gain control of the Ardennes to cut off the allies supply lines in order to isolate British forces from the American troops. A pivotal task for German forces to attain this goal was to gain access and take control of the Belgian town of Bastogne. However, an important strategic stepping stone to get there was Noville, which is just seven kilometers northeast of Bastogne. Two main reasons made Noville such a critical location for the Germans: First, it had a junction of roads that were important for displacement of German forces to the West. Second, it provided an alternative road to access Bastogne from the north.1 DESCRIPTION OF THE BATTLE On 17 December, 1944, five German divisions were able to push through the VIII Corps defensive line 100 miles east of Bastogne nullifying

With Britain and other countries heavily involved in China, the U.S. searched for another of trade within the region. President Millard Fillmore dispatched Commodore Matthew C. Perrywith a letter demanding Japan to open their ports for commerce. Upon the first arrival, Americans were great with a completely new experience for people. Some people considered found the Japanese s culture to be repulsive while others were very fascinated. This paper discusses the experiences of two Americans who visited Japan during the Meiji Periodcompared to initial experiences. There were numerous reasons why the United Stateshad an interest in forming diplomatic relations with Japan. The opening of China s ports for commerce along with the new acquisition of a California made the United States want to expand its influence in the world. One of the most abundant resources needed was coal. With steam ships replacing sailing ships, the United States had to establish a coaling station for refuel. With the heavy influence of the British over in China, Japan made for the perfect geographic location. America was involved in whaling for their oil. Prior to Commodore s Expedition to Japan, there were preconceptions of the type of people they were. American sailors left stranded on the island of Japan were typically imprisoned. A series of recent events has the general pubic asking them selves if animals should be allowed to be in captivity. On February 24, 2010 Tilikum, a 12,000 pound killer whale held at Sea World Orlando, dragged trainer Dawn Brancheau to the bottom of the tank during their daily show performance Dine with Shamu, killing her. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Humane Society conducted a study in 2009 and found some of the negative side effects on marine mammals in captivity. In the wild dolphin and whales can spend up to 80% of their time in the ocean depths and the remaining 20% of their time at the oceans surface (Marine). Because of the shallow and small tanks they spend more time on the surface causing skin problems. This also caused their dorsal fins on top to collapse without the support of the ocean water gravity pulls the fins over. In the wild a dorsal fin collapse happens in approximately 1% of killer whale and in captivity all male and most female whales experience it. Most animals are put into cages much smaller than their natural habitat restricting their natural instincts to roam around. Confiding animals to a single area could also causes unsanitary conditions to arise if the animals reproduce quickly since they would all be close to each
  • 10. The Triton Fountain By Gian Lorenzo Bernini The Triton Fountain was specially made for Pope Urban VIII Barberini by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The fountain is placed at the center of the piazza; the fountain represents the God of Sea with anthropomorphic body and huge fish tail, kneeling on an open shell supported by the tails of four dolphins. The dolphins, leaning towards each of the four cardinal directions, open their mouths to swallow the water of the surrounding pool, telling us that they drink up all the waters of the world. The fins of the dolphins clutch the crown of Urban VIII, with papal tiara, keys of St. Peter, and Barberini bees. The Triton as the subject of this fountain is a very interesting choice. According to many historical sources, PopeUrban VIII was a very talented poet, and he was very well known for his pursuits in this field. Triton was someone who achieved a sacred unity with nature and literature. And as we can see from the monument, the Triton was an appropriate public monument to Pope Urban s distinguished literary accomplishments. On the other hand, this explanation of the connection between Triton and Pope Urban is not effective, and unquestionably does not give us full information. American art historian John Beldon Scott has established that Urban was suspicious of pagan imagery for fear it might lead the faithful astray. This suggests that the Triton Fountain may imply to something more significant than just the simple literary symbol. Also, it is important to mention that at least three
  • 11. Pros And Cons Of Using CMOS . EXPERIENCE WITH CMOS IMAGE SENSORS (AFTER THE YEAR 1990) MOS technology has shown promising results for electrode preparation but has certain limitations of decrease in threshold voltage due to mismatch in charge components, and thinner gate oxide [114]. CMOS technology has not only reduced these problems but also gained popularity over its counter parts of microphotodiodes and CCD [17]. Unlike the initial trials of obtaining the phosphenes stimulation, placement of retinal tissues, use of appropriate biomaterials, electrode impedance characterization, choice of right patients, researchers had started working in feature enhancement of retinal implants using the CMOS technology especially after 1997. Table 3 compares the two popular,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Scaling of number of electrodes using digital pads with flexible design had increased the reliability, testability and safety of the epiretinal implant proposed in [123] with high innocuousness. The path changing journey of CMOS APS had started in 2008, when Joachim N. Burghartz et al [05] implanted the first automated imager chip into patient s eye, following were the major contributions reported: Low cost and disposable photodiode made of Thin Film on CMOS (TFC). High dynamic range (HDR). Extended range of 120dB utilizing the linear to logarithmic transformation of photocurrent in to sense signal voltage with compromise on contrast and brightness [124]. Later on counting method to enhance the scalability of the implanted device was the novel technique suggested in [125], all the desired features like high dynamic range, higher speed, lower cost and good sensitivity at the cost of complexity was achieved with the time domain counting scheme. A novel approach of 0.8V 4096 pixel integrated sense and stimulus CMOS image sensor with balanced current mode stimulator and photon to biphasic current converter was proposed in [126]. The proposed approach utilized the three operating modes i.e. test mode, programming mode and implant mode for obtaining different results like verification, electrical stimulation and fully functional chip operation. The authors claimed the higher resolution of 4096 pixel with power
  • 12. The Opening Sequences of David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron s... The Opening Sequences of David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron s Film Version of Great Expectations In this media assignment I shall be analyzing and comparing the similarities and differences of two famous directors film versions of Great Expectations . The two directors are David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron. David Lean s version was more popular and well known than Alfonso Cuaron s because Lean was the first director to actually direct Great Expectations . This made it more difficult for Alfonso Cuaron because he had to bring the film up to date by making the film more modern and there have also been 10 other films based on the novel Great Expectations . David Lean had directed his version of Great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is revealing to the audience that the film fits into the horror genre and is giving the audience clues about what the film will include, such as an ominous atmosphere and scenes of violence and gore. Lean has created this mood and theme so that the audience would want to know what the film actually contains, whether it is horror or drama. David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron are using the different techniques to keep the audience interested in the movie. The soundtrack of both versions is different because Alfonso Cuaron has played music throughout his opening frames. He has introduced sound effects such as waves that give the audience a pleasant sound to their ears; this same effect is employed with seagulls. The music that is actually played has a joyful and happy mood, which encourages the audience to think that the film is a non violent film. But when Magwitch appears from underneath the water in the tenth frame and grabs Pip, at this point the music changes from joyful and happy to dramatic and shocking. Cuaron deliberately did this to shock and alarm the audience from a happy and cheerful atmosphere to an explicit and up tempo atmosphere, this technique also keeps you interested in the film. On the other hand David Lean has only played music in his opening
  • 13. Car Dependency In The United States Car dependency is one of the most important problems in the United States. Owning a personal car is mandatory in most small towns. All roads are designed for cars without pedestrian ways, and so much of the land is reserved for parking lots. Pedestrian friendly cities rates are really low when it is compared with car friendly ones. As people have difficulties to reaching services and activities without having a car, owning a car has its disadvantages and problems also. The problem s origin date back to the 1920s. While cities were being planned, overall design was based on car usage, but did not account for growth in that population. Urban sprawl added to increased car usage, which was not taken into account during the design phase, and improper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, mass motorization and increased road standards were results of inappropriate urban planning. Every two households in the US had one registered automobile on average in the mid 1930s, which is earlier than many European countries. According to this high rate of motorization, high road standards were developed by planners and engineers quickly, and cities adopted to this pattern easily. After the mortgage policies in the 1950s (1), the interstate systems destroyed urban neighborhoods and created divided urban systems by using wide big roads, so urban sprawl increased. Also, low vehicle taxes and gasoline prices reduced the cost of driving, and increased this car travel demand over time. Additionally, the government subsidized most of the gas taxes, tolls, and registration fees, and the result was the lack of public transportation in many US cities. Especially after World War II, privately owned transit systems increased ticket prices, cut services, and prompted people to own a private car. In 1970s, some of the US cities started to promote walking and cycling with appropriate amenities (1), but it was not enough to change people s travel behaviors. Lastly, maybe most importantly, zoninglaws do not allow mixed land use planning which facilitates shorter trips between amenities in most of the US cities. Zoning laws, also requires a minimum number of parking lots per usage, rather than the maximum numbers of limited parking such as most European

Bacteria On The Brain By Emily Eakin In Bacteria on the Brain By Emily Eakin, she writes about the ethics surrounding a doctor who attempts to save the lives of patients with brain tumors by using his own alternative methods. In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, the author writes about Victor and his creature s attempts to expand science, and answer moral questions concerning life and death. Regarding the substance of the article, Neurosurgeon Dr. Paul Muizelaar and his controversial treatment of three patients suffering from terminal braincancer engenders serious ethical debate. On one hand, Muizelaar epitomizes a man of brilliance and ingenuity, driven by the desire to correct his patients otherwise hopeless situations. On the other hand, a man filled with hubris who discounted the risks in his pursuit of success. Given the evidence present in the text of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley would contend that Muizelaar s actions were innovative and driven by his desire to save the lives of his patients. Shelley values the dedication to expand the knowledge of humankind as well as life and the avoidance of death at all costs. She often references the sciences, and the idea of pushing sciencefurther, for example, when Victor creates life. He had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body (35) and succeeds. In doing so he attempts to expand the sciences with his discovery, and achieve the impossible. Shelley highlights this dedication to broaden science when framing

Argumentative Essay About A Soccer Game I happened to be on outdoor sandy field experiencing different mixed emotions as I saw people with several face expression at the end of the big soccer game. It was exhausting and unforgiving game that got some players injured, and caused the bad sportsmanship to take place between the coaches, players, and fans. Our fans and our rival s fans fought each other, and they threw stuff across the stadium as if they were dealing with a gigantic wild animal. Some of the playerscouldn t fully focus on their soccer match due to their divided attention, and some of them were terrified by the fan s unnecessary acts. Whenever I think about this moment, I cry and smile at same time because we finally understood the meaning of fair play of soccer, and happy ending of our game occurred as a result of that. I knew before the game that the unsportsmanlike conduct would happen, it really did as I thought, but besides our soccer game s dirty side, it appeared to be more captivating by the way it was played than any other game. I believe that there were three causes for the ungentlemanly behavior that we faced during the tournament. Both my team and the rival team fought to death in order to win the important soccer league because neither of the teams made it to the final game before. They always face each other during the knockout games which made them rivals. Finally, the beauty of the game also had an effect for why the match took place to be played dirty. Once the

While Slavery was against human nature and while Abolitionists believed in ending the practice of slavery, the South had their own reasons why slavery was needed in America and how basically they supported pro slavery. For instance, some arguments for slavery followed this so called logic: Sudden end to the slave economy would have had a profound and killing economic impact in the South where reliance on slave labor was the foundation of their economy. If all the slaves were freed, there would be widespread unemployment and chaos. And by comparison with the poor of Europe and the workers in the Northern states, that slaves were better cared for (ushistory.org). But in a section from, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, written by him, Douglass describes some of the brutality that he had witnessed. The overseer s name was Plummer. Mr. Plummer was a miserable drunkard, a profane swearer, and a savage monster. He always went armed with a cowskin and a heavy cudgel. I have known him to cut and slash the woman s heads so horribly, that even master would be enraged at his cruelty, and would threaten to whip him if he did not mind himself. Master, however, was not a humane slaveholder (Douglass 44). The patient s mental status started to shift a little so her health care team decided to move her to the intensive care unit. A nasal wash as well as a blood culture came back negative. • 38. Compare And Contrast Paths Of Glory And All Quiet On The... World War 1 has been a famous war throughout history. Many films have been made surrounding it, sometimes realistic and sometimes not so much. Paths of Glory and All Quiet on the Western Front were two such movies that depicted the Great War. Each movie is unique in their own sense and although no movie will completely convey the harsh reality of the war some movies are better than others. Depending on when and what year the war would have looked vastly different to different soldiers. Some would only know the reality of the trench while others would recognize tanks rolling over the ground which were impenetrable to normal gun fire. Which side of the war one was on would have also lead to different views, as in when one side is winning the other is losing, and when morale is up on one side normally morale is down on the other. In the history of war there are many different aspects and some similarities. The Great War introduced the automatic gun and the idea of trench warfare. The Great War had more casualties by artillery and it was said No flesh or a bone could live above ground in the battlefield . Everything was fought across No man s Land . Many advancements led to soldiers hiding behind a wall of dirt in the ground which really changed up the game. Fighting this way seemed more dangerous due to the automatic guns and it was more effective than the U.S. Civil War where everything was fought face to face only a few yards away. World War I was the largest and

Growing up around non Christian relatives it was hard to express my faith around people who never heard about God. Although it was a challenge for me, I was able to reach out to one my closest cousins. My cousin s name was ironically Christian. Christian had a troubled childhood, one that seemed like a nightmare. He was raised by a single mother, since his dad was fatally shot by a rival cartel in Mexico. Christian would get in and out of trouble at school, to the point where he was expelled for having possession of marijuana. He was then forced to go to a military school for kids that had bad grades or bad behavior. During that time, I would talk to him occasionally to see what he was up to. I knew he was making a lot of bad choices, but I never judged him for it. I was just waiting for the right day to invite him to church with me. At that time, I did it because I knew he was lonely and still hurting from the lost of his father. I figured that it would be a thousand times better for him to be at church than being up to no good. Surprisingly, Christian accepted the invitation. Due to that choice he made, his life was forever changed. Christian actually liked the feeling of being at church and told me that he wanted to continue to come along with me every Saturday. He told me that being in church was the only place that can fill an emptiness he had deep inside. Sadly, Christian came with me to church a few more times, but strayed away by some friends who were bad influences. I knew it was going to happen in a matter of time, but I thought his absence would only be temporary. Few years passed, Christian then invites me over to hang out. As we talked, he brought up that he wanted to start going to church again. He said that during his absence he still believed in God, but his girlfriend and his friends kept him from going. I was really shocked, but at the same time was very happy. Just over a week ago,

An impasse was reached between myself (VP of operations for Les Florets) and the Restaurant owner and this was primarily due to the fact that we both had reference points with a ceiling which we felt we could not exceed. Going into this negotiation as the VP of operations my goal was to primarily succeed in buying the restaurant. Although I expected this ploy to work it seemed to make things worse as the owner retorted that he had several offers on the table and could just easily sell the restaurant or any one and let that person worry about keeping the Les Florets name and maintaining its profitability and that won t be his problem. At this point I was in a dilemma , having resorted to strong arm tactics and failed miserably (primarily because the owner wanted to test my resolve) was there a way to get back into favor? There were several factors that culminated into the ultimate inability to reach an agreement. Firstly, was the differing priorities of both parties , while I was focused on reaching a deal and considered an impasse to be a failure , the other party was more focused on money and all the benefits offered paled in comparison as mentioned by the owner compared to the money foregone. Secondly, the owner seemed to want the property independently valued and then sell at this price. Knowing that the valuation was more than I could offer, I could not agree to this and this

In June of 1776, the Declaration of Independence was both written and signed, declaring that America would be free from the British rule after King George III had abused their rights and freedoms, such as forcing the colonists to house British troops and making the people respond to his laws, rather than the laws directed and consented by the people themselves. Aftering the succession of the American Revolution, the United States obtained expansion of political, economic, religious, and cultural freedoms, for which with a strong national government, these freedoms would be taken away with another tyrannical ruling (Writing). Jefferson states, To take a simple step beyond the boundaries thus specially drawn around the powers of the Congress is to take possession of boundless fields of power, no longer susceptible of any definition (Document A). Jefferson explains that the powers of Congress are boundless, and these limitless powers could be abused by the highest levels of authority, like they had been by the King of England. He followed the idea that the constitution should be read strictly, so the government would not have too much power (Thomas). Alexander Hamilton s views of the nineteenth century conflicted with those of Thomas Jefferson, as he explains, ... and the laws of the United States made in pursuance of it, and all treaties made... under their authority shall be the supreme law of the land. He believed that if the power given to congress were harmful, they would not be given powers in the first place. But, he failed to realize that a strong national government over the people is what led to the position of the American society before the succession of the British rule. Hence, we continuously keep on thinking, but at the cost of higher energy requirements. Indeed, thinking utilizes more brain power which in turn requires more oxygen for which more blood flow is required. Hence, in a nutshell, the more we think the more energy we consume and the more the genetically weaker our genes become as we are wasting more energy. What we see here that these... The Greeks used different methods and reasonings behind their architecture because they made sure that their pieces were exquisitely made to represent the things they thought were important. They valued their Gods and their worship of the Gods. It was important for them to always represent or have symbolic meaning behind all of their architectural designs. There are many hidden symbols that are involved in Greek architecture like trees, trophies, leaves, hair, and sacrifices to name a few. Greek architecture includes these hidden symbols to worship Gods, and to represent culture in their pieces. First, Greek architecture was mainly created to give respect to Gods and create worship areas for the Gods. A very early Greek architectural example of showing respect towards the Gods, was when trees were used as the first temples as a place of worship. In this case, Harper writes about his new born son, Reuben Masai Harper, who only lived for twenty eight hours even the title includes the word death, so it is safe to assume that this poem is about a father mourning for his son. The hope that their child will be okay in the hands of doctors and the despair when they find out that modern medicine has failed them. Also, the regret that a parent feels after losing a child. During his reign Henry was known to keep favorites and handsomely reward those who pleased him. For this reason, early on the noble families of England vied for Henry s attention and rewards by trying to make the ladies in their families his mistresses. However, that strategy changed when Anne went from being his mistress to becoming queen of England. This meant that they weren t just playing for money and power but they were now fighting for a place on the throne. This became increasingly more difficult after Anne s execution when Henry showed that no one was safe and wining the throne was a dangerous play. Still, families like the Seymour and the Howards tried to gain power this way. For the most part, the Seymour succeeded in this endeavor by giving Henry what he most desired, a male heir. The Howards however failed with Anne and her daughter Elizabeth and then with Catherine who though young and fertile gave Henry no children and was later discovered as an
