Honda Motor Company the worlds biggest motorcycle makers. Hondas first
motorcycle was born out of necessity in immediate post World War-2, Japan, where
public transportation was desperately overcrowded and gasoline severely restricted.
He dreamed of giving people everywhere an economical form of
transportation, and began producing small motorcycles, including one built in 1949
called the D-type dream.
Brand image is an era and reputation that the product gains through its brand
name building brand image helps the organization in achieving targeted sales and to
sustain in the market for a long time. It helps the organization in an increasing the

The present study will be based on both primary and secondary data.
Primary data will be collectedthrough a structured, questionnaire, apart from this,
the other techniques such as interviews, discussions and onsite observations will be
used to collect primary data.
Secondary data will be collectedthrough company annual reports, journals,
magazines, textbooks and internet. All this data can be analyzed and final conclusions
and suggestions can be drawn.

A sample of 100 customers was taken as per the convenience for the present
study.

INDUSTRY PROFILE:
Motorcycles have made their debut around the 1950s; this section looks at the
two wheelers which have over the years caught the imagination of the country. It was
in the year 1954 that the Indian government ordered for totaling number of 800
motorcycles to man the Pakistani borders. The bullets which were initially launched
in England as a 350cc bike and it was upgraded to 500cc a year or so later. These
bikes have remained unaltered, barring some cosmetic changes which have undergone
over the years. Thus one can say without much of the doubt that the 1955 Bullet was
one of the initial hits of the Indian two wheeler industries and till today it continues to
be a darling of the motorcycle enthusiasts. Enfield Bullet had a close competition with
another study bike named Rajdoot; as the bike was strong enough to handle the rough
Indian roads. The company had roped in Indian He-Man Dharmendra for the
promotion of the Bike. With more than 1.6 million vehicles on the road the Rajdoot
motorcycle was one of the initial hits of the earlier years of two wheeler industry in
the country. When heavy motorcycles were the order of the day a relatively lighter
bike had caught on the imagination of the Indian 2 wheeler user. Ind-Suzukia bike
launched by the then TVS Suzuki group was an instant hit. However the bike could
not sustain its initial success due to the high import content in the vehicle and less of
the localization. In Scooters Bajaj Chetak has been hugely responsible for adding
momentum, to the transport system of the country, till today it remains one of the
most successful brands to have come out of the Bajaj Stable. The scooter is named
after the Horse of Legendry Rana Pratap Singh; these sets of two wheels have become
a part of the Indian milieu and are often considered a representative of the Indian
middle class operation. Very few 2 wheelers have been able to emulate the success,
which Bajaj Chetak has achieved over the years. Similarly LML Motors enjoyed a
reasonable success with the launch of LML select which came with new age
technology and improved performance.
Today newer models of 2 wheeler are entering the market every day, slowly
pushing these names down the memory lane. However names like Chetak, Rajdoot
and Bullet will always find a mention in the history of 2 wheelers in the country.

5. About 2 wheelers:
The motorcycle has entered its third century, and the two wheeler has come a
long way from its origins as a bicycle with an engine. Its new celebrated in the
museums and is revered as a symbol of rebellion and freedom. With the meteoric rise
in gas prices in the first decade of 21st century, many former riders are returning to
motorcycles to save on gas and to create less impact on the environment.
History:
The first motorized two wheeler was built by SYLVESTER HOWARD
ROPER of Massachusetts in 1867. The inventor demonstrated his steam powers
motorbike at fairs along the east coast. It featured hand grip twist throttle and a 2
cylinder engine fired by coal. It did not catch on. The German inventors Gottlieb
Daimler and Wilhelm May Bach produced the Reitwagen (“Riding Car”), the first gas
powered bike in 1885. The German Company Hildebrand & wolfmuller debuted the
first bikes for sale to the public in 1894. All the major motorcycle brands that are still
around today. Were founded in the period of 1902 to 1955. Triumph (1902),
Harley-Davidson (1903), Honda (1946), Suzuki (1952) Kawasaki (1954) and Yamaha
(1955).
Types:
Motorcycles are classified as either street or off-road. Off-road Bikes are built
to with stand the vagaries of travelling over unpaved terrain. There are 3 basic types
of Street motorcycles. A standard bike usually doesn’t have the room of lots of
luggage or accessories and the rider is positioned upright with his knees below his
waist. Cruisers are larger, with lots of room for baggage and other extras. The cruiser
rider usually sits low in the saddle, reclined back a little, arms extended farther to the
handle bars. The third category, the Sport Bike usually has plastic fairing and is much
lighter faster and more maneuverable than standards and cruisers, the riding profile is
a lean towards the handle bars. Each of these categories has sub categories of
specialized motorbikes, including the sport tourer, which has more room for luggage
and a more upright rider profile.

6. Popularity:
Motorcycle sales worldwide grew by 6.5 percent during the economic
downturn of 2008. According to Bloomberg.com. The insurance institute for Highway
safety estimates that motorcycle registrations in the United States grew by 51 percent
between 2000 & 2005.
Safety:
Fatal accidents involving motorcycles are far higher than cars. Data from the
U.S department of Transportations 2005 Fatality Analysis Reporting System report
(the latest available of this writing) indicates there were 25.32 car crashes resulting in
a fatality per 100, 00 passenger cars in that year, compared to 85.93 fatalities per
100,00 re4gistered motorcycles. The biggest causes of motorcycle rider fatalities are
passenger vehicles making an illegal turn into the rider and riders taking turns too
wide and going off the road.
Fuel Efficiency:
The United States govt. does not require fuel emissions standards for
motorcycles and the industry does not have a standardized method for computing
miles per gallon. Modern motorcycles average around 50 miles per gallon.
Two Wheeler Models:
The two wheelers have played a pivotal role in the surging growth of the
Indian automobile industry. Over the years domestic sale of various brands of 2
wheelers has grown in large numbers. Even, in exports, the 2 wheelers have been able
to maximize the profit margin of various 2 wheelers manufacturers. There are mainly
3 models of 2 wheelers namely, Scooter & motorcycles & mopeds. In recent years,
the 2 wheeler industry has witnessed a sea change. During the yesteryears the scooters
used to have about 50 % of the Market share and the rest were divided between the
motorcycles and mopeds. But now the trend indicates the people are referring
motorcycles more than the scooters. At present there is a huge demand for the
motorcycle models in India.

7. Two Wheeler Companies:
There are a number of 2 wheeler companies in India. The produced vehicles of
extremely high standard. Some of the leading 2 wheeler manufactures in India are
Bajaj Auto, TVS motors, Kinetic Motors, Suzuki Motor Corporation, Royal Enfield
Motors India, Yamaha motor India, LML India & Honda Motor Cycle & Scooters
India Pvt Ltd. Many of 2 wheelers manufactured by these companies are exported to
countries in South East Asia, Africa & South America. Motorcycles are as usually
priced higher than that of the scooters and mopeds.
There are even equipped with more features for faster travel based upon the
engine displacements and power capacity motor cycles are further classified as ; Road
Bikes , Trial Bikes, Racing Bikes, & Touring Bikes. Most of the motorcycles in India
come with engine capacity of about 100cc to 250cc.

Two wheeler sales maintain scorching growth.
The 2 wheeler industry has reported robust sales for the month of May. Major
companies reported improved sales year over year (YOY).
Bajaj auto’s sale including the sale of 3 wheelers rose to 62 % at 300000 units
vs. 185000units (YOY) while TVS motors registered a sale of 154667 units and

9. increase of 30%. Hero Honda, the country’s largest 2 wheeler maker, saw sales jump
14% to 4,35,933 units.
Bajaj auto’s exports were up 60% at 96000 units vs. 60000 units YOY. The
company’s motorcycles sale grew 63 % at 27000 units while its 3 wheeler sales were
at 30000 units to 20000 units last year. up 52%the company’s new Discover 150cc
sold 12000 units in May and the target for June is 25000 units. Bajaj auto expects its
exports to go up to 100000 units in June.
Hero Honda motors senior vice president marketing & Sales Anil Dua said the
14% growth in May is very satisfying, coming as it does over the high base of our
sales last year. We had significant contributions from segments resulting in this
achievement. The company’s scooter Pleasure recorded sales of over 24000 units last
month, he added.
TVS’s sales for motorcycle rose 26.94% to 67906 units from 53495 units in the
year ago period. The Company said its exports in May surged 62.07 % to 18046 units
against 11135 units in May 2009. Company’s 3 wheeler sales soared over three fold
to 2313 units in May from 707 units in the same month of last year.

12. Honda – Company history:
Soichiro Honda began by manufacturing piston Rings in November 1937. He
quickly became a Sub Contractor to Toyota, and then expanded to other engine parts.
On September 24, 1948 the Honda Motor Co. was founded. Soichiro Honda
took advantage of a gap in the Japanese Market that was decimated by World War II;
Japan was starved of Money & Fuel, but still in need of Basic Transport. Honda
utilizing his manufacturing facilities attached an engine to a bicycle, creating the
Cheap and Efficient Transport that was required.
The Honda Piston Manufacturing facilities were almost destroyed. Soichiro
Honda created a new company with what he had left, giving it the unusual name of
“Honda Given Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha” which translates to “Honda Research
Institute Co. LTD.” Despite its grandiose name, the first facility bearing that name
was a wooden shack where Mr. Honda and associates would fit Engines to Bicycles.
Interestingly the official Japanese Name for Honda Motor Co. remains the same, in
honor of Soichiro Hondas efforts.
Honda quickly began to produce a range of scooters and motorcycles and
Soichiro Honda quickly recovered from the losses incurred during the war. By the late
1960s Honda had conquered most world Markets. The British were especially slow to
respond to the Honda introduction of Electric Starters to motorcycles. By the 1970s,
Honda was the largest producers of Motorcycles in the World.
Honda began producing road Cars in 1960, mostly intended for the Japanese
Market. Though participating in the international Motorsport Honda was having
difficulty selling its automobiles in the United States. Build for Japanese buyers,
Honda’s small cars had failed to gain the interest of American Buyers.
Honda Finally established a foothold in the American market in 1972 with the
introduction of the civic-larger than their previous models, but still small compared to
the typical American car—just as the 1970s energy crisis was impacting worldwide
economics. New emissions laws in the US, requiring American car makers to affix

13. expensive catalytic converters to exhaust systems, noticeably increased striker prices.
However Honda’s introduction of the 1975 Civic CVCC, CVCC being a variation on
the stratified charge engine, allowed the Civic to pass emissions tests without a
catalytic converter.
In 1976, the Accord was immediately popular because of its economy and fun
to drive nature; Honda had found its niche in the United States. In 1982 Honda was
the first Japanese Car Manufacturer to build car plants in the US, starting with the
Accord plant in Marysville, Ohio. They now have plants in Marysville, Anna, and
East Liberty, as well as in Lincoln, Alabama (Honda Manufacturing of Alabama), and
Timmonsville South Carolina, and plan to open a new plant in Tallapoosa, Georgia.
Honda’s North American and US head quarters are located in Torrance, California.
Honda’s Canadian Civics is manufactured in their plant in Alliston, Ontario since
1985.
Honda was also the first Japanese automaker to introduce a separate luxury line
of vehicles. Created in 1986 and known as Acura, the line is made up of modified
versions of Honda Vehicles usually with more power and sportiness that their Honda
Counter Parts.
1989 saw a move that was set to revolutionalize the way car makers tuned their
engines. Honda launched their VTEC variable valve timing system in its production
car engines., which gave improved efficiency and performance across a border range
of engine speeds. one of the first of its kind is passenger vehicles, it worked on
premise of tuning one engine to operate at 2 different settings depending on load.
Normal driving would use a ‘shorter’ cam lobe that resulted in more efficient
operation. A more aggressive, longer duration can engages when engine RPM reaches
a set point resulting in more power during hard acceleration. The driver gets the best
of both worlds; high efficiency and high power on demand. Many automakers have
introduced their own versions of variable valve timing. The technology is
Now standard across the whole Honda Range.
For the 2007 model year, Honda plans to improve the safety of its vehicles by
providing front seat side air bags, side-curtain airbags, and anti lock brakes as

14. standard equipment in all automobiles available in North America (except the Insight,
S2000, and Acura NSX, which will not have side curtain air bags). By 2006, Honda
plans to have a standard equipment vehicle safety assist and rollover sensors in all
light trucks, including the CR-V Odyssey, and Acura MDX. Honda also plans to
make its vehicles safer for pedestrians, with more safely designed hoods, hinges,
frame constructs and brake away wiper pivots.
Milestones inHonda History:
Honda was found in the late 1940s as Japan struggled to rebuild following the
II-World War. Company founder Soichiro Honda first began manufacturing Piston
Rings before tuning his attention to inexpensive motorcycles. Mr. Honda has a
passion for engineering, and this became evident by the wild sales success of his
motorcycles in the 1960s and by competing head to head against the world’s best in
race tracks. Today, Honda is a juggernaut, offering class-leading machines in most
every category.
 1906 Soichiro Honda is born in Hamamatsu, Japan. His father owns a
blacksmith shop that also repairs bicycles. As a young man, Honda is an
apprentice in an automotive garage in Tokyo.
 1928 Honda returns to Hamamatsu to open his own auto repair Shop.
Enamored with speed, he build his own race car.
 1936 Honda is injured in an auto racing accident.

15.  1937 He forms a company to manufacture piston rings. After a shaky start
(owing mostly to his complete lack of formal training in Metallurgy) his
company becomes successful. He is a key supplier to Toyota, which starts
manufacturing cars at about the same time.
 1946 Soichiro Honda sells his piston-rings business. Japan is struggling to
regain some semblance of normalcy, after having been bombed flat at the end
of WWII. Honda realizes the need for affordable transportation and begins
grafting war-surplus two stroke motor onto bicycles. (the motors had originally
been intended for use on portable generators for military radios).
 1948 Honda Motor Co. Ltd is incorporated. Sichiro Honda focuses on the
engineering side of the business, while financial operations are controlled by
Takeo Fujisawa.
 1949 the company produces its first real otorcycle, powered by a 98cc two
stroke motor. When an employee sees the first one assembled and it is ridden
outside the factory, he says, “it is like a dream”. The name “Dream” was
adopted for the bike officiallyknown as model D.
 1951 Mr. Honda is infuriated by the noise smell and fumes from the 2 stroke
motorbikes (including his own) that crowd Japanese city streets. In response,
the company creates its first Four Stroke Motorcycle, the Dream E (146cc).

 1952 Despite the fact thet he despises such primitive powerplants, Honda flirts
with his original notion of auxiliary motors for bicycles. The Club F (2 stroke,
50cc) clip-on motor is sold through thousands of independent bicycle shops

16. across Japan. It is only manufactured for 2 years, built it introduces the “Cub”
trade mark, which will be popular for decades in various guises.
 1953 the Benly J (4 stroke, 90cc) is released. At least some of these were sold
with “Benly” tank-badges, and carried at Honda name on engine cases only.
The Benly series also lasted a long time, and ushered in an era of improved
performance. They were immediately popular with japan’s amateur racers.
 1954 Soichiro Honda shares his own dream of success in Grand Prix
motorcycle racing. He writes, “My child hood dream was to be a championof
motor racing with a machine built by myself”. However before becoming
world champion, it is strongly required to establish a stable corporate structure,
provided with precise production fecilities and superior product design. From
this point of view we have been configuring on providing high quality products
to meet Japanese domestic condumer demand and we have not had enough
time to pour our efforts in motor cycle racing until no.... I here avow my
intention that I will participate in the TT race and I proclaim with my fellow
employees that I will pour all my energy and creative powers into winning.
Mr. Honda attended the Isle of Man races as an observer that year, paying
particular attention to the German-made NSU motorcycles that dominated the
125 and 250 classes. Although it is widely believed Honda “copied” these
machines, it is not true; the NSU racers were singles with bevel-drive cams-
nothing like the early Honda racers.
 1957 the leading Italian manufacturers, including MV Agusta, Gilera and
Mondial announce that they will withdraw from World Championship Racing,
citing increasing costs. MV Agusta will renege on this agreement and
continue racing. Honda buys one of the last Mondial race bikes. The Japanese
company doesnot copy the Italian bike, but it does use it as a source of
inspiration and an example of the standard they need to reach.

17.  1958 the Super Cub (aka C100, aka CA100, aka simply “the Honda 50”) hits
the market. It features a pressed-steel frame, leading link fork, step-through
design and a 50cc four stroke motor. It is destined to be sold under various
names, and will later grow to 70cc and finally 90cc. it will become the most
popular motorcycle-indeed, the most popular motor vehicle of any kind.
 1959 Honda enters the famed Isle of Man TT races for the first time. The
company fields five machines in the 125 cc “Ultra-light weight” class. The
bikes are 125cc twins, of the type raced the previous year in Japanese national
competition. Naomi Tanaguchi achieves the teams the best TT results,
finishing sixth. Honda wins the manufacturer’s trophy in the class.
Honda opens American Honda Motor Co. in Los Angeles.
 1961 Honda dominates both the 125cc and 250cc classes at the TT. Mike
Hailwood wins both races, with Honda’s finishing 1st through 5th positions in
each case. The Isle of Man Examiner newspaper says simply “It was a
devastating win for the Orient”.
 1963 this year, Honda focuses on F-1 car racing, and the motorcycle racing
programme suffers. Sales of street bikes remain strong, however: the super
Cub is awarded the French Mode Cup: Honda opens its first overseas plant in
Belgium: Grey advertising unveils the famous “You meet the nicest people
on a Honda” campaign. Early the following year, Honda buys commercial
time in the Acadamy awards for a “Nice People” television and featuring the
super cub.
 1964 two stroke motors begin to dominate the smaller-displacement racing
classes. In order to remain competitive in 250cc classes, Honda produces six-
cylinder 250, the 3RC164.

18.  1968 19 years after the company’s first 2 wheeler rolled out of the factory,
Honda produces its 10 millionth motorcycle.
 1969 Honda unveiled the CB750 at the Tokyo Motor Show but it didn’t hit
the market. It was the first market bike to come with Disk brakes.
 1970 Honda entered four riders in the Daytona 200, but only one-Dick Mann-
finished. It was a huge win for Honda in America.
 1972 honda finally admits that inorder to build a competitive 250cc
motocrosser, the company has to make another 2 stroke motor. CR 250
“Elsinore” reaches the U.S in early 73.
 1973 Soichiro Honda retires as the Company President. He remains on the
Board of directors, which grant him the honorific title “Supreme Advisor” in
1983.
 1974 the first gold wing, the GL1000 is introduced at cologne. It reachs the
U.S market in 75. This was the first Japanese four stroke to be water cooled.

19.  1978 in an effort to build a competitive four stroke motorcycle for the 500GP
World Championship, Honda produces the Oval Piston NR500. It was
effectively a 4 cylindered V-8 with 8 connecting rods and 32 valves.
 1981 Honda Gold Wing production moves from Japan to a new factory in
OHIO.
 1983 Freddie Spencer wins the 500cc World Championship. For the first time
Honda Wins the “Blue Riband” Championship.

Established in 1999, the Honda Motorcycle & Scooters India Private Limited
HMSI is a wholly owned subsidiary of Honda motor Company Ltd. Japan and is
located at Manesar, Haryana. The Company’s Most well known brand is the Honda
Activa that Revolutionized the Indian Scooterrete market in terms of design and
features. The company exports scooters to the European Union.
The Company initially ventured in to scooters as its joint venture agreement
with the Hero Group precluded its entry into the motorcycle segment for five years.
The Company set bench marks in the Indian Scooter Industry with the launch of its
gearless Scooter Honda Activa. Honda Dio launched after it, was slightly upgraded
and trendier version of Activa. Honda Eterno was another addition to the repertoire of
Honda Scooters. First Bike launched by HMSI was Honda Unicorn. It was followed
by Honda Shine. All the products launched by HMSI were run away hits in the

The HMSI factory is spread over 52 acres, with a covered area of about 85,815
square meters at Manesar, Gurgaon district of Haryana. The foundation stone for the

2001. The initial installed capacity was 100,000 scooters per year, which has reached
6,00,000 scooters by the year by 2007 and motorcycle capacity shall be 4,00,000 per
