This document outlines an agenda for integrating social studies, Common Core standards, and balanced literacy. It introduces Greg Mortenson's book "Listen to the Wind" as a read aloud text to model summarization. Key elements of the balanced literacy framework are described, including read alouds, guided reading, and modes of writing. Standards for social studies, reading, and writing from Common Core and Wisconsin are presented. Themes for social studies and resources for disciplinary literacy are also listed.
