El trastorno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad (TDAH) es un
trastorno heterogéneo, complejo y frecuente en la infancia, que provoca
un deterioro significativo en el funcionamiento del niño. En este
artículo se revisan su epidemiología, etiología, diagnóstico, comorbilidad
asociada, curso y tratamiento. Se presta especial atención a los
trastornos del sueño, ya que estos 2 procesos presentan una alta comorbilidad
y comparten mecanismos neurobiológicos comunes. Además,
existe un solapamiento entre los síntomas del TDAH y ciertos
trastornos del sueño como la apnea obstructiva, el síndrome de las
piernas inquietas y el síndrome de movimientos periódicos de las extremidades.
Debe evaluarse sistemáticamente a los niños con sospecha
de TDAH en busca de alteraciones del sueño, ya que su tratamiento
se asocia a menudo con una mejora en los síntomas y una
disminución de la necesidad de medicación estimulante.
