Sister Callista Roy created the Adaptation Model which focuses on physiological and environmental adaptations of individuals and their environments. The model views people as adaptive systems that strive to maintain balance between four subsystems (physiological, self-concept, role function, and interdependence) when interacting with stimuli from the internal and external environment. The goal of nursing according to Roy is to promote positive adaptation in patients by assessing their behaviors and identifying stimuli affecting their responses, setting adaptive goals, and implementing interventions to manage stimuli and improve coping abilities. Researchers can apply the Adaptation Model in nursing research by analyzing variables related to the four adaptation modes.
