The document presents a novel heterogeneous metropolitan area network architecture that integrates IEEE 802.11 wireless mesh networks with LTE to enhance network capacity, coverage, and quality of service (QoS). A new routing protocol and a reinforcement learning-based algorithm called Cognitive Heterogeneous Routing (CHR) are introduced to optimize transmission technology selection based on network parameters. Extensive simulations demonstrate that this architecture significantly outperforms standalone LTE and Wi-Fi networks, achieving up to 200% increased throughput.
