OF ROOFS

13. 1. SHED ROOF, LEAN-TO
ROOF or PENT ROOF
A roof shape having
only one sloping
plane.
PROS: Easy to assemble and use much
fewer building materials.
CONS: Can have problems in high wind
areas.

14. 2. GABLE ROOF
A roof having a single
slope on each side of a
central ridge
PROS: Easily shed water and snow, provide more
space for the attic or vaulted ceilings and
allow more ventilation.
CONS: Can be problematic in high wind and
hurricane areas.

15. 3. HIP ROOF
A roof which slopes
upward from all four
sides of a building
requiring a hip rafter at
each corner
PROS: More stable than gable roofs. Excellent fotr
high wind and snowy areas.
CONS: More expensive to build than a gable roof.
It’s a more complex design that requires
more building materials.

16. 4. PYRAMID ROOF
A hipped roof that has
a four to six sloping
surfaces, terminating
in a peak.
PROS: Extremely resistant to strong winds.
CONS: The cost is higher due to the complexity of
the design.

17. 5. FLAT ROOF
Appear to be complete
flat with as slight pitch
to allow for water run-
off and drainage.
PROS: Extra living space on the roof for a patio,
garden or partially enclose for a penthouse
room.
CONS: Makes more at risk to water leakage.

18. 6. SALT BOX ROOF
Asymmetrical in design,
with one side being
more slightly sloping flat
roof and the other more
of a lean to, with gables
at each end.
PROS: The slope makes it easy for water to run off.
CONS: Design can be tricky, which makes the
building cost higher.

19. 7. PAVILION ROOF
A roof hipped equally
on all sides, so as to
have a pyramidal form,
a pyramidal hipped
roof.

20. 8. GAMBREL ROOF
A roof which has two
pitches on each side.
PROS: Provides extra living space for a attic.
CONS: It is not recommended for heavy wind areas
or regions that have snow.

21. 9. MANSARD ROOF
Also known as a
French Roof, four
sided roof with a slope
on each side forming a
low pitched roof.
PROS: Help create a great deal of extra living
space.
CONS: Cost more than typical roofs because of the
add-ons.

22. 10. SAWTOOTH ROOF
Shed roof made into
a series of lean-to
roofs covering one
building.
PROS: Windows are placed in the vertical spaces
of the roof, allowing more natural light
inside the home.
CONS: Much more expensive because of the
complex design and various building
materials needed.

23. 11. BUTTERFLY ROOF
Two shed roof where
the slopes meet at
the center of the
building.
PROS: Upper angle of the outer edges allows
larger windows to be used. Gives more
natural light.
CONS: More expensive not only the roof but also
the maintenance.

24. 12. DOME ROOF
Hemispherical form
of roof. It is a
polygonal with
inverted bowl shape.
PROS: Beautiful in design as well as durable.
CONS: Expensive to construct because of the
complexity.

25. 13. CONICAL ROOF
or SPHERE
A steep roof of circular
section that tapers
uniformly from the
circular base to the
central point.
PROS: A great way to use the best type of roof for
each section of the home.
CONS: The more complex, the more expensive it
will be.
