There were two main social classes in ancient Rome - the patricians and the plebeians. The patricians were the wealthy landowning nobility that made up the upper class. In contrast, the plebeians comprised the lower class and included everyone from well-to-do tradesmen to the very poor. While both classes shared some aspects of family structure, religion, language and public activities, there were also differences between their social lives, living arrangements, and lifestyles.
