Plebeian men typically wore a short-sleeved woolen tunic secured with a belt when working, and a simple toga made of whatever fabric was available when in public, with more expensive fabrics indicating higher status. Plebeian women generally wore a peplos like men's tunics or a more common two-piece chiton in various colors, and married women distinguished themselves with an outer stola shawl.
