Role of COPE in Research Ethics
What is COPE?
 COPE stands for Committee on Publication Ethics
 COPE is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting
integrity in research and its publication
 COPE is a forum for editors of peer-reviewed journals to
discuss issues related to the integrity of the scientific
record.
History
 COPE was founded in 1997
 by a group of medical journal editors concerned about
publication misconduct
 E.g. plagiarism attempted, passing off fraudulent data,
unethical research, breaches of confidentiality, etc.
Role of COPE
 Its aim is to provide thought leadership on publication
ethics and practical resources to educate and support
editors and publishers.
 Membership signals to authors, reviewers and readers
that a journal in research publishing and that it is in
direct alignment with COPE’s recommended core
practices for journals and publishers.
Resources available for COPE members
 Forum: Members can bring challenging ethics issues
for discussion and advice.
 Flowcharts: Guide editors in handling a publication
ethics issue
 Cases: All of the integrity and ethics issue cases are
brought to COPE forums for discussion are easily
accessible in database for members to browse
 eLearning: COPE provides a series of ten eLearning
modules designed for editors and publishers to improve
their understanding on publication ethics
 COPE’s Audit Tool: COPE has also provided a journal
checklist, a journal audit tool to assist editors in
meeting the best practice in publication ethics
Other resources
 Sample letters: COPE developed a series of sample
letters to make awareness of publication ethics
 Webinars: COPE also hosts webinars on emerging issues
in publishing ethics.
