Gromaca and Brossa are two poets from different times and places but with similar experiences and themes in their work. Both used poetry as an outlet to express their critical views of their surroundings. They were both impacted by war, with Gromaca experiencing the Yugoslav war and Brossa the Spanish Civil War. Their poems frequently critiqued militarism and called for social change. Though separated by time and geography, they provide an example of how poets in different eras can address similar issues of injustice through their commitment to social and political themes in their writing.
Two poets from different eras and places, Joan Brossa from Barcelona in 1919 and Tatjana Gromaca from Croatia in 1972, fought for similar causes through their art. Brossa experienced the Spanish Civil War firsthand and used surrealism and dadaism in his clandestine writings to combat fascism. Gromaca also used poetry as a weapon to transmit the pain of the Yugoslavian Civil War in her country. Both artists fought as soldiers through their words to achieve peace, justice, and freedom.
Tatjana Gromaca and Joan Brossa were both influenced by their experiences with war in their poetry, though they experienced different wars. Tatjana lived through the Yugoslavian War of 1991-2001 between Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia, while Joan participated in the Spanish Civil War from 1936-1939 as a teenager in the republican army. Both developed a strong social criticism and antimilitarism in their poetry as a result of their war experiences, with Tatjana expressing the sadness of war and Joan believing in the randomness of survival. Their shared social and political commitment led them to focus on similar themes of criticizing capitalism and hypocrisy while expressing pain and refusal of war.
