Robotics Slideshare Resource This SlideShare Presentation contains a set of power points separated into lessons the ‘you tube’ clips you will need at the appropriate juncture For ‘The Robotics Challenge Unit’ so you can keep everything together and easily accessible. By: Ms. Thomas
Lessons 1 & 2
Robotics! It’s great fun. What will we be doing? -Finding out about robots. -Designing , building and programming robot to participate in a safety challenge at the BRC. -Preparing for the Bundaberg Robotics Challenge.
Lets work out some rules! No mishandling any materials especially the NXT units and laptops. Notify teacher straight away of problems with equipment No food or drinks around any electronics No building non-class related structures with the Legos
Let’s look at the Robotics Challenge Website! Enter the URL address: http://roboticschallenge.weebly.com/ Take a minute or two to have a quick look around the place!
. What is a Robot? What are examples of a robot?
What do you think a robot is? The internet site www.dictionary.com defines a robot as “A mechanical device that sometimes resembles a human and is capable of performing a variety of often complex human tasks on command or by being programmed in advance”.
A robot is essentially made up of five basic components: A movable physical structure Some sort of motor A sensor system A power supply A computer “brain” that controls all of these elements
. “ A robot is a device that is built to independently perform actions and interact with its surroundings.”

Youtube Clips Robo Flush http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvZU2PchUmY
Youtube Clips Rubik Cube Solver http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QOvEG27Gt4
Which of the clips showed actual “robots?” Explain the difference between a robot and a remote controlled machine/ toy Let’s start a wall chart on surprising robots!
Go to the Robotics Challenge website! Click onto the page Multiple Choice Mayhem and complete the quiz!
. Lesson 3 Be sure to have your teacher robot set up for this lesson!
What do you think? How are robots used in our daily lives? What is possible with a Robot?
Lesson 4
What do you think? In what ways do robots need to interact with their surroundings?
Types of movement- Locomotion- To move from place to place Localization- To perform functions in a specific area (egs. turn head) Manipulation- To touch or move by mechanical means Cooperation- To work together (egs two motors working together for movement)
Youtube Clip Robo Cup Dog Soccer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbE3qhPcx4g Look for the different types of movements the robot makes in the clip!!!
Challenge- Have groups open laptops, and start the NXT program. Each group should now make their robot move into a chalk circle that has been drawn on the floor. Experiment with using degree vs. seconds. Can you figure out why degrees are better?
Lesson 5
What do you think??? Robots can only do what they are programmed to do.
. By the end of the unit, we will make our own robot dance or do a search and rescue in the BRC. So what does it need in order to do that???
. Moving: The robot must be able to control some set of actuators to move how and when we want it to. We must be able to place the robot anywhere we want. Sensing: The robot must be able to perceive its environment through sensors obstacles to avoid, and objects of interest that we want it to interact with. Plan/Act: The robot must be able to make decisions using its processor based on it’s sensors and feed them to it’s actuators to be able to move.

Each group must choose a question. 1. What is a sensor? 2. What sensors will we need to work with? 3. What is a processor? 4. What is an actuator?

Youtube Clips Red Sumo Bot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrbzWmIu36s
Lesson 8
. What is your Final Project designed to do? How can you prove it is a Robot and not a remote controlled machine? What have you learned about robots and programming? What has been the biggest challenge for you? What has been the biggest challenge for your group?
Culminating Activity Students attend the Bundaberg Robotics Challenge and compete against other schools.
