Nearsightedness, also known as myopia, is a vision defect where those affected can see clearly up close but objects appear fuzzy or out of focus at a distance. It is caused by a natural change in the eyeball's shape from round to egg-shaped. Left uncorrected, myopia can cause problems with learning, social skills and self-esteem in children. It can be treated with glasses, contact lenses or eye surgery depending on the individual's vision problem and severity. Over 25% of American adults have myopia, totaling around 70 million people in the United States.
