Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer who was the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911. He made explorations to the Northwest Passage, Northeast Passage, North Pole, and South Pole. In 1928, Amundsen disappeared while on a rescue mission in the Arctic to save his friend Umberto Nobile, who had crashed in the Arctic, and his body was never found.
