Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer who was the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911. He had a passion for exploration from a young age despite his mother wanting him to become a doctor. Amundsen was also the first person to successfully navigate the Northwest Passage between 1903 and 1906. For his South Pole expedition, he secretly changed his planned destination and kept it hidden from his crew so he could be the first to reach the South Pole, arriving on December 14, 1911 with five men and 18 sled dogs.

2. Roald Amundsen was born on July 16th 1872. He was from Norway and died June 22nd 1928.When he was young he wanted to be an explorer, John Franklin but his mother wanted him to be a doctor.

3. AntarcticaRoald was the first person to sail the north west passage between 1903-1906. He sailed on his first ship he bought called the Gjoawhich was only small.This was his first polar expedition.

When Roald was going to sail to the north pole he got a special ship called the Fram.The Fram had special features like a round bottom which was a third as wide as it was long.It was designed like that so it would not get stuck in the ice and crush.He heard that Peary, that is another explorer, had reached the North Pole so he changed direction and headed for the South Pole.

5. .South PoleWhen he decided to go to the south pole but kept it a secret from everyone even his crew.When they set off he told his crew about the change of plans.He was doing this because he was in debt and this would give him money.Robert Scott was going to the south pole as well but he was going for scientific reasons.
