Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) was a Norwegian polar explorer who was the first person to reach both the South Pole and the North Pole. In 1911, Amundsen led a small expedition that became the first to reach the South Pole on December 14th, traveling by dog sled. Amundsen had originally planned to go to the North Pole but changed his plans when Robert Peary reached it first. He later became the first person to fly over the North Pole in 1926.

Some of his early accomplishments included being the first to navigate the Northwest Passage from 1903-1906 and learning survival skills from Inuit people. In 1911, he led an expedition that was the first to reach the South Pole, getting there over a month before Robert Falcon Scott's British expedition due to using sled dogs and following a more direct route. Amundsen went on to attempt other Arctic explorations but met with less success and disappeared during a rescue mission in 1928.

Endurance
Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition set out in 1915 with the goal of crossing Antarctica from west to east. However, their ship Endurance became trapped in pack ice in the Weddell Sea. After months drifting on ice floes, Endurance was crushed and sank in October 1915. The crew then camped on floating ice until it broke up in April 1916, forcing them to evacuate in lifeboats to uninhabited Elephant Island. Shackleton and 5 others then made an incredible 800-mile open boat journey in the James Caird to South Georgia to fetch help, arriving in May 1916.
