The Montana Department of Environmental Quality and Montana Department of Transportation developed a method to compost large numbers of roadkill deer. They established a pilot site in Victor, Montana where over 600 deer were successfully composted from 2005-2006. At the site, deer carcasses are layered with woodchips, sawdust and compost materials in large bins. After 45 days at temperatures over 130 degrees Fahrenheit, the compost is turned and further composted. This process successfully composts deer year-round, including frozen carcasses in winter. State agencies are working to address concerns about attracting predators and spreading diseases, but more research is still needed to determine risks from using the compost along roadsides.
