• University of Santo Tomas (1879-1882)

• He received his licentiate in Medicine in year
1884.
5. His training as an Opthalmologist
• Rizal worked in the eye clinic of Dr. Louis De
Wecker, a famous French Opthalmologist.
• He intoduced opthalmoscopy into France and
advanced ocular surgery.
• He modified cataract and strabismus surgery
• He worked for Dr.Wecker from November 1885
to February 1886.
6. • In February 1886, Rizal moved to Heidelberg.
• Augenklink (eye clinic) of Otto Becker.
• Becker was professor of opthalmology at the
University of Heidelberg from 1868-1890.
• Rizal spent the next six months working as an
assistant to Becker.
7. • On his way back to the Wecker’s clinic in Paris,
Rizal took time to travel through Europe to learn
more.
• Among the opthalmologists he visited, the most
well-recognized that time is Ernst Fuchs, whom
he visited and worked with for a short time in
Vienna.
• In Berlin, Rizal met Rudolph Virchow, the
“father of pathology”.
8. Practice of Opthalmology
• Rizal practiced opthalmology, mainly in
Calamba, Laguna (1887-1888)
• In Hong Kong (1891-1892)
• In Calamba, Rizal finally began to fulfill his
lifelong dream of caring for his mother’s
eyesight.
• In Hong Kong, he successfully removed the
cataract from his mother’s left eye.
