Rackspace has been developing a tool to help them design, deploy and security assess complex configurations for customers called Checkmate. This talk will cover the concepts behind and the architecture of Checkmate and how it helps minimize the time to deploy systems and verify they have been created to spec and in a secure state. A discussion of how Checkmate has inspired the concept of Test Driven Security based on the Test Driven Development model familiar to the development world.

Successfully Implementing DEV-SEC-OPS in the Cloud
For federal agencies, accomplishing in just a matter of weeks IT tasks that typically take months or years may seem like a pipe dream. That’s the promise of the DevSecOps methodology. DevSecOps is a way of thinking that encourages software developers to work collaboratively with IT operations and security staff on development, testing and quality assurance to develop and deploy software more quickly and automate deployment of code, security and infrastructure changes.
Commercial Cloud provides a comprehensive platform of tools, technologies and services that can enable federal agencies to realize this promise.
The VA Digital Services Team (DSVA) has been leading the Department of Veterans Affairs on their journey to the cloud for the past 4 years. The initial DSVA cloud deployment was vets.gov and Caseflow on AWS. Vets.gov and Caseflow are real world examples of how modern devsecops techniques be used with existing federal ATO security requirements.
In this talk, AWS and DSVA will present DevSecOps principles, best practices and lessons learned. DSVA will discuss how Vets.gov and Caseflow have implemented these techniques inside the VA. This includes applying continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) to the software development process where security checks are performed and automated to ensure compliance and ATO conformance with VA's security standards.

He discussed various open source tools for building cloud computing including hypervisors like KVM and Xen, object storage solutions like OpenStack Swift, and automation/orchestration tools like CloudStack and OpenStack. Hinkle emphasized that open source solutions provide many advantages for cloud computing including lower costs, collaboration, and avoidance of vendor lock-in. He also covered management tools for private clouds and highlighted the importance of automation.

Eucalyptus is open source software that implements cloud computing within a datacenter. It provides an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solution for enterprises and service providers to build their own on-premise private clouds. Eucalyptus architecture consists of 5 components - the Cloud Controller (CLC) for high-level scheduling, Cluster Controllers (CC) to manage virtual machines, Node Controllers (NC) that execute VMs on host machines, Storage Controller (SC) for block storage, and Walrus for persistent object storage. Together these components allow users to deploy and manage virtual computing environments in a cloud-like manner.

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible.
