The Nature Of Discovery In The Virgin Suicides By Sofia...
Discovery is often provoked when the actions of others act as a catalyst, often stimulating personal
growth. However, the ramifications are dependent on individual perceptions and the unique context
they bring to the process. These ideas are amplified by Shakespeare s Jacobean romance The Tempest,
with its array of characters who dramatise this instability through diverse human responses contrasting
to the antagonizing nature of discovery. 1999 American drama film, The Virgin Suicides by Sofia
Coppola, reflects the collective consciousness of a group reminiscing on past experiences and
interactions, opening them to discover personal potential. This process acts as a catalyst for an
evaluation of the impact of change, leading to new discoveries. In exploring composer s
representations of discoveries, individuals learn the symbiotic relationships of new insights and their
intrinsic value.
Discoveries that are catalysed by unexpected an unprecedented human interaction, are often the most
powerful and lead to immense personal growth. Thus understanding emerges through a range of
dramatic forms and features within The Tempest, As the title suggests the work revolves around an
extended metaphor, partly concerned with the forces of nature, evident from the very opening of the
play as Prospero s elaborate scheme to inflict vengeance on his usurpers in a manner much like the
chaotic nature of a storm or tempest. As such, Prospero s, lack of empathy and self awareness is
reflected

William Golding´s Lord of the Flies and How Jack Changes...
Lord of the Flies was written by William Golding in 1954. Golding s experience in the war had an
effect on him and changed his views on humanity. His book was written to demonstrate just how naive
the book The Coral Island was. Golding conveys how mankind deteriorates when one has no rules,
order or morals. He shows no matter how young or what nationality one is, humans have an internal
battle of right and wrong and that without virtues and principles all can go down the path of savagery
even innocent children. The third person narrative that Golding uses lets the reader observe how the
story develops. Jack is initially a responsible head strong boy who follows the rules that society had
given him. Our first impression of the choir is that of an army. They were marching approximately in
step. The use of word marching suggests a uniform military movement. Therefore the first sighting of
the choir leaves a lasting impression of anonymity on the reader. This is conveyed when they are
described as a creature . Ralph s group cannot see the choir so they are unknown and mysterious.
Furthermore Jack is presented as an arrogant yet an authoritative character. In the sentence I ought to
be chief because I m chapter chorister and head boy, Golding emphasises Jack s arrogance and
ignorance as Jack believes that he is suitable for the role of chief due to his role in school which has
no relevance. In addition, Jack is also spiteful and cruel towards Piggy. This is conveyed

Weight Loss Profile
Identifying your Health and Weight Profile for Successful Weight Loss
Even though there are some people who gain weight for genetic reasons, typically the main cause of
having excess pounds on your frame comes from the type of lifestyle that you lead. This means that if
you want to lose weight, you need to step back and see where your health flaws in your lifestyle lay.
If you are the type of person to indulge in fast food, sweets and other high calorie indulgences on a
regular basis, you can probably safely say that your weight issues are not genetic or health related.
If you want to honestly see what your health and eating habits are, you can always make yourself up a
health and weight profile to see exactly where your flaws are.
To start out, go ahead and make a chart that shows for every day what you ate, when you ate it and
how many calories you ingested. While you make your ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The only way that you will lose weight and keep it off is to change your past bad eating habits and

Allow room in your journal for recording how much you exercise. Ideally, you will want to
incorporate exercise into your daily routine a few times each week. In fact, it is suggested that you
exercise at least three to five times a week.
Your journal will allow you to see if you are getting enough exercise or if your lifestyle could use
some more activity. At this point you can determine what type of exercise you want to bring into your
life if you find that you need more.
Exercise does not need to mean visits to the gym; you can get into shape in many different ways. For
example, opt to take a long walk instead of sitting indoors or you can take the stairs instead of the

The Effects Of Coal Ash On The Health Of Water Systems
Introduction Coal ash is a byproduct of burning coal in power plants and is composed mainly of
aluminum and silicon oxides. This ash is commonly stored away in dump sites, only to leach out
solutions of concentrated toxic heavy metals. Such issues are detrimental to the health of water
systems, posing both a human and environmental health risk. However, there are solutions to this
problem. Coal ash possesses unique chemical properties that allow for the remediation of other
environmental concerns, such as the treatment of soil polluted with heavy metals, the removal of
nutrients from wastewater, and the remediation of acid mine drainage in streams. Coal ash is known to
contain a number of different toxic metals, the exact content dependent upon the coal it is formed
from. Containing this potential pollution hazard is an expensive problem, as approximately 75% of all
ash generated is stored in landfills. In these sites, rainwater can leach out toxic metals including
mercury, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, molybdenum, lead and selenium. As over 500 million tons of
ash are produced each year, there s an increasing environmental health hazard to the surrounding
water systems of these landfills. Pollution can spread to municipal water systems and potentially
poison humans. As such, figuring out a better solution to deal with the unused coal ash is of significant
importance. Current uses of coal ash primarily include the formation of concrete due the pozzolanic
properties of coal

Comparing The Catcher And The Rye, By J. D. Salinger
The theme of The Catcher And The Rye by J.D Salinger is you can not stay a child forever because of
experiencing new events like seeing that you have changed, experiencing the bad part of the adult
world, and experiencing a tremendous loss in your life. Holden Caulfield is a sixteen year old. Holden
went to a private school called Pencey, but he was kicked out of the school for failing three out of four
of his classes. Holden now roams New York. First of all, people change each time they go to the
museum. When Holden talks about the museum after he looked for Phoebe he mentions all the details

but yourself. When he says that he doesn t imply physical change but means the change to become a
adult. He says, Or you d heard your mother and father having a terrific fight in the bathroom. The
meaning of the passage would be that over the course of your life you lose your innocence and
become an adult, an aspect of life Holden tries to deny. Also, when Holden meets a prostitute he is
reminded of the adult world and how it is not child friendly. When Holden arrives back at the hotel he
encounters a man named Maurice. Maurice offers Holden a prostitute and Holden accepts Maurice s
offer. When the prostitute named Sunny came to Holden s room he said, She crossed her legs and
started jiggling this one foot up and down. She was very nervous, for a prostitute. She really

Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform
Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act Abstract The Dodd Frank Wall Street
Reform and Consumer Protection Act is a massive piece of financial reform legislation passed by the
Obama administration in July 2010 as a response to the financial crisis of 2008. Named after sponsors
U.S. Senator Christopher J. Dodd and U.S. Representative Barney Frank, the act s numerous
provisions, spelled out over roughly 2,300 pages, are being implemented over a period of several
years and are intended to decrease various risks in the U.S. financial system. The law was initially

To help make them more transparent, a clearinghouse of sorts similar to the stock exchange must be

to determine exactly the best way to put this clearinghouse into place. And not all derivatives will be
subject to the law. The Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading

Insurance Office (FIO) under the Treasury Department, which would identify insurance companies,
like AIG, that create risk to the entire system. AIG was caught in in a major liquidity crisis when its

How Is Harrison Bergeron A Dystopian Society
Imagine if we were equal in all ways. Think about being exactly the same in all aspects; the same
haircut, intelligence level, the same routine everyday over and over again. In the short story Harrison
Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, it shows us the theme of equality through a futuristic dystopian society,
which can relate to the society we live in today. In the dystopian society, Harrison is an athlete and is
extremely intelligent. He tries to be above equal, therefore he is considered to be extremely dangerous.
Although equality may seem to be a necessary component in a modern progressive society, forced
equality could be harmful to itself by eliminating competition, individuality, and motivation.

Individuality is what makes everyone different, without it we wouldn t be who we are today. Above
all, individuality is what makes us unique. It s what sets us apart from everyone else. Everyone
deserves a chance to express themselves. In the story Harrison Bergeron, it says that the ballerinas,
...were masked so that no one, seeing a free and graceful gesture or a pretty face... (Vonnegut 5)The
main reason that the ballerinas had to wear masks was to eliminate the felling of them making people
feel unequal because they weren t as beautiful as the ballerinas. Another example of individuality
would be the story of Talia Joy. Talia was diagnosed with two types of cancer, neuroblastoma and
leukemia. Due to the cancers, she lost her hair and her hair was what made her feel beautiful. After her
diagnosis, she found another way to express her beauty. The way that she had learned was to express
herself through her makeup. She once said, Make up is my wig. Since she was unable to express her
beauty and individuality through her hair anymore, she directed it through another form, her makeup.
Take pride in what makes you different; individuality is what makes you different form the rest.

make us stand out. If equality were to be forced, individuality would only be a

A nail polish that doesn t chip is basically the Holy Grail of mani pedis and the $6 billion nail salon
industry claims to have found it in a gel.
Over the last couple of years, the gel manicure has grown in popularity: Two thirds of salons now

nail damage.
Still, mixed in with all the hype are complaints that gel nails do still chip, the polish can only be taken

is lacking. Worse yet, they may cause serious nerve damage and infections. If something seems too

Friedman Mackey And Mackers Case Study
1. Of the three views presented, Friedman, Mackey, and Rodgers, which one do you think is the most
compelling? Explain your answer.
Mackey has the best view of the responsibilities of business for not only their investors, but also the
customers and the community in which they work. Though one role of business is to increase profits
and maintain investors. Business has the ability to benefit the community in more than profits alone.
Mackey has a great perception and sees the value of looking out for the benefit of the customers and

motivation is based on profit growth. At the end of the day, Mackey wants to be a resource to both, the

Demetrius And Helena In A Midsummer Night s Dream By...
In A Midsummer Night s Dream, William Shakespeare heavily expresses the distinct characteristics of
Demetrius and Helena through the direct and indirect characterizations that affect them in the play.
Demetrius character is best emphasized, directly and indirectly, through the dialogue and actions of
himself and those around him. In Act One, Scene One, after Egeus explains to King Theseus that he
wants his daughter, Hermia, to marry Demetrius instead of Lysander, Demetrius demands that
Lysander relinquish his love and control over Hermia because marrying her is his certain right . After
the demand, King Theseus is reminded that Demetrius made love to...Helena and won her soul and
that Helena still devoutly dotes over him. In this scene, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Helena is first introduced storming past Hermia and Lysander, being quick to accuse Hermia of
stealing Demetrius love from her. Helena s lengthy response, use of exclamations, sarcastic and
whiney tone, and admitted jealousy, portray her perfectly. In fact, the audience better comes to
understand the character in her following monologue containing phrases such as: ...how happy some o
er other some can be! Through Athens I am thought to be as fair as she ; ...he hailed down oaths that
he was only mine... heat from Hermia...dissolved, and showers of oaths did melt ; I will go tell him of
fair Hermia s flight...if I have thanks, it is a dear expense. This shows that Helena isn t just a jealous
friend, but a hurt girl with low self esteem; she is desperate to have love and happiness again to extent
of giving Demetrius what he wants at the expense of her friends wellbeing. Despite the late hours,
dangers of the night, and Demetrius annoyance with her, Hermia expresses her desperation and
relentless love for him by proclaiming ...you [Demetrius] draw me, you hard hearted adamant , I love
you the more , and ... spurn me, strike me...only give me leave... to follow you . Humorously enough,
even when Demetrius does not grant Helena permission, she still devotedly follows him. Due to the
constant flow of insults and abuses from Demetrius, Helena s character is pushed to the point where
she wallows in self pity and despair as well as further compare her darker, less attractive complexion
to Hermia s. When Lysander awakens under a love spell and professes his undying love for her, she
runs away in distress believing he is implementing a cruel joke on her. When Demetrius follows in the
same love struck manner, she becomes exasperated and falls further into her self pity. Helena s tone
even become satirical towards the two men and Hermia which not only offends

The Importance Of Social Deviance
Deviance is a concept that sociologists tend to struggle coming up with one widely accepted definition
for. It is a concept that impacts everyone in a given society, either directly or indirectly, and is
generally defined as Variation from a set of norms or shared social expectations. (Laurence Basirico,
Barbara Cashion, J. Ross Eshleman 2014:195) Society often views social deviance as a negative thing
that disrupts that natural order and guidelines of a society, but it also has many positive functions to it.
Society can help, define the limits of social tolerance , Increase the solidarity and integration of a
group , Serve as a safety valve for social discontent , and indicate defects of inadequacies in the
existing social organization. (Basirico, 2014:195). All of these positive functions of a deviant behavior
tend to lead towards positive change in a society that although may serve as a culture shock to the
society at first, such as equality for LGBT groups, it will eventually become beneficial to the society
and make it a healthier and more sustainable one. Without deviant behavior, the society becomes
stagnant and will die, much like a living organism s cells becoming stagnant, and the organism dying.
Although social deviance can bring productive change to a society, it is still important to understand
that it can lead to dysfunctions and be harmful to the society, as well as the people within it.
Dysfunctions of society can be things such as,

Summary In The Lottery By Martin Niemoller
What do you think Then Lottery by Shirley Jackson means? I could bet some money that you are
wrong. What about First they came by Martin Niemoller, you know what that means? The plot in The
Lottery is, that you should speak up even if it s the wrong thing to do. The plot in First They Came is,
justice indifference Martin Niemoller. The three claims I have are justice indifference, standing up
may not be the easiest, following the crowd (peer pressure).
Now, the claim is talking about justice indifference. The justice indifference in The Lottery First they
came are similar yet different in its own ways. This is how. In the lottery their justice is the town s
lottery they have a yearly lottery but it s not what you are thinking (most likely) it s not that you win
money, it s that you win rocks. You ask how? Why? What do you mean by rocks? Well the answers to
that is, how? They don t do money but rocks and what so they do with the rocks? They throw them at
you, why thought? Because it s their towns tradition. The indifference in the Lottery is that you expect
yourself or someone else to win money not rocks thrown at you to your death. Now the justice in First
they came is that he/she was not helping others and the justice in that was that he/she got no one to
help them out. The indifference is that you expect someone or anyone to help you out in the time in
need but you have to do something in return. In both of these stories you expect something else then

What do you think of when someone says standing up ? Do you think it is an easy thing to do or hard
or a little bit of both? We all have different answers but let s just say it s not ALWAYS the easiest thing
to do. In the Lottery Tessie is the one to stand up but it s not easy because she is by herself. No one is
on her side. She tries to stick up for herself bur that was the first time she stuck up for the lottery she
never stuck up of anyone else so who do you know would help her out right now. Same goes for first

they don t stick up for the Jews being taken away. Once that person is being taken

B2b Exchanges And Business Activity Perspective
Business to business (B2B) exchanges or marketplaces provide dramatic opportunities to automate
collaborative business processes with customers and suppliers, generate internal efficiencies, and
reach new markets at minimal cost. (Kenjale Phatak, 2002)
The epigraph quote from a 2002 article in the CRM magazine provides the commonly used and
accepted definition of Business to Business (B2B) exchanges. The key differentiating attributes of the
B2B Exchanges from the Business to Consumer (B2C) exchanges are: the target customers (Business
customers such as Resellers, Industrial market, etc.); the nature of demand which is derived based on
consumer demand; and the exchange process which are more formal in nature (more purchase ...

366). The Vertical market is based on specific industry sectors, such as the computer manufacturer
Dell s inclusion of chip maker Intel and AMD into its exchange. The Horizontal market is a wider
supply market that cuts across several industries, such as FedEx and UPS providing transportation and
logistical exchanges for a wide variety of businesses. The Internet provides an immense resource
value to both markets. In the vertical market, the dominant resource benefit is derived from the lower
costs of buyers operations, lower inventory requirements as well as the removal of distribution
channel blockages such as agents and brokers where a Just in time (JIT) manufacturing is
complemented. In the Horizontal market, the Internet provides: expanded market reach, increase
liquidity in the market, reduction of geographical and logistical barriers and more.
The second perspective considering the Procurement stages is also noted in the book Digital Business
Concepts and Strategy as, Three types of B2B exchanges often illustrate the history of the relationship
between a seller and a buyer: new buy, modified rebut, and straight rebuy (Coupey, 2005, p. 367)

Analysis Of David Hanson s Carnage And Culture Essay
Question2: In Carnage and Culture, Victor David Hanson expressed a slanted perspective about the
crucial battles in western history in order to support his theory that western militaristic strategies are
superior to alternative forms of warfare. He fostered his sentiments by explaining how specific battle
tactics can unify or divide a nation in a matter of moments. However, his reference to the concept that
western warriors continuously triumph in war, is expressed in a manner that does not fully evaluate
both perspectives of the conflict. Hanson alluded to his message behind Carnage and Culture in his
thesis: A sense of personal freedom, superior discipline, matchless weapons, egalitarian camaraderie,
individual initiative, constant tactical adaptations, and flexibility, preference for shock battle of heavy
infantry were themselves the murderous dividend of Hellenic culture at large ... Yet for the past 2,500
years even in the Dark Ages, well before the Military Revolution, and not simply as a result of the
Renaissance, the European discovery of the Americas, or the Industrial Revolution there has been a
peculiar practice of Western warfare, a common foundation and continual way of fighting, that has
made Europeans the most deadly soldiers the history of civilizations. (Hanson 5 6)
Although Hanson is able to give an overview of valuable battles that express western confidence and
reflect the west s brutal military tactics that, his analysis of the war does not

Factors That Make Up Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Repetitive thoughts, desires, or impulses that are unwelcome and provide anxiety or distress are
considered an obsession. While repetitive unwanted behaviors are a compulsion. Together these two
words are contributing factors that make up Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The American
Psychiatric Association constitutes OCD as an anxiety disorder in which people have recurring,
unwanted thoughts, ideas or sensations (obsessions) that make them feel driven to do something
repetitively (compulsions) (Dougherty, Wilhelm, Jenike, 2014, p. 432).

Likelihood TAF and Moral TAF generate a cohesive connection between thought and action
(Thompson Hollands, Farchione, Barlow, 2013, p. 408).
In most cases OCD is treated through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, exposure and response
prevention, and/or with the use of medications. Exposure is repeatedly exposing the subject to a
trigger of obsession. If a person is afraid of getting sick, they would expose themselves by sitting in a
hospital. Response prevention is asking the patient to refuse contributing to their compulsive behavior.
The behavior they perform is to reduce rising anxiety levels, but while participating in ERP the patient
will experience levels of anxiety while facing the fear. In the hospital situation, the patient would have
to refuse leaving or excessive handwashing. Since OCD habits are usually created out of anxiety or
distress the use of anti anxiety medications are commonly used to suppress anxiety. Without the
anxiety, the need for a compulsive behavior is not as strong. Cognitive treatment was formed to
redirect misrepresented cognitions that might persist having not been considered or dealt with while
under behavioral treatment (Whittal, Thordarson, McLean, 2004, p. 1560). Undergoing cognitive
treatment is an alternative to ERP as anxiety levels are lower with less trigger provoking methods. To
compare Cognitive Behavioral Therapy against Exposure Response Prevention, Whittal

The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald And Soldier s...
In 1920s, America undergoes a period of cultural and social revolution. After the shocks by the chaos
and violence of WWI, with a burst of economy which brought unprecedented levels of prosperity to
the country, the generation turned into a lifestyle of wild and extravagant. Both published in 1925, the
time when the jazz age at it s peak, The great Gatsby by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald and Soldier s
Home by Ernest Hemingway depict the fragmentation of the soared society by narrating the
experience of characters. Soldiers Home and The Great Gatsby show some aspect of the society at
their time, though not as a major intent of the books, and we can see how the trend of the society
influenced people. Both pieces of work have settings in the same time period, 1920s, but slightly
different interval. In Soldier s Home, Krebs returned to his hometown about one year after the war.
The celebration has already ended and people get to their daily life, after enough talks over the events
experienced by the returning soldiers. There s a scene about Krebs sitting on the bench, seeing the
pretty girls on the street, He has the thought Nothing was changed in the town except that the young
girls had grown up. But they lived in such a complicated world ...that Krebs did not feel the energy or
the courage to break into it. (Hemingway 2) The girls in the town apparently triggered Krebs s
thought. The young girls in town are...unaffected by the war. They were a nice pattern to

My Passion For Palliative And Hospice Care Social Work
When it came to envisioning my advanced block placement, I knew I wanted something different,
something to transform the way I practiced social work for the last fourteen years. The timing ideal as
my passion for palliative and hospice care social work was in transition. I seized the opportunity in
preserving it by securing an international internship where I could research the cultural differences in
the quality of both the tangible and intangible deliverables in providing compassionate end of life
care. The destination, Nepal!
Knowing I was traveling to an underdeveloped nation, I did my homework, or did I? I partnered with
an ancillary community college who I thought focused on expanding the development of social work
as a discipline in Nepal and were teaching BSW students to become nearly the first truly educated
social work practitioners in the country, which excited me. Disappointingly, the system lacked
structure and organization.
My trip started off tumultuously, as did my relationship with my host, consequentially who lacked
hospitality among other qualities, leaving me to discover the copious cultural dichotomies and
challenges around every corner, alone, daunted by the lack of local support. Thankfully my Seminar
Instructor, Wanda Anderson, LICSW and my classmates supported me through the pit falls every step
of the way!!! Learning that the Nepalese culture and its diverse issues, for example, the concept of

The stubbornness of cumbersome personal debt following a recovery highlights problems that are

Many people assume alcohol is nothing more than liquor or rubbing alcohol; however, this is not the
case. There are many different types of alcohol including some of the alternate fuels we put into our
vehicles. Over the course of my working life I have come into contact with many different alcohols,
but Isopropyl Alcohol, or 2 propanol, was one of the ones that I encountered the most and I have
always wondered exactly what it is. 2 propanol is a very interesting molecule and has a lot of uses for
products in many different markets. Because of this, many people come into contact with it and do not

Typically isopropanol is found in its liquid form because it is not easy to freeze with a freezing point
of 88.3°C. Not only does 2 propanol have a low freezing point, but it also ignites easily with a flash
point, the temperature in which a liquid can ignite in air, of 12° C, but it also denser than air when
vaporized (ILPI). So, if there was a fire and some became vaporized, it could potentially cause a large
explosion. Another interesting thing about isopropanol is how it is soluble in many different liquids
such as alcohol, water, ether, chloroform, benzene, and most organic solvents. This means that you can
create many different substances out of propanol that could potentially be used in places that you
would not expect. Such as a chemical we use at my work that we call blanket wash (mixture of 2
propanol and petroleum) and it is used to clean excess ink off of a printing press and it is used because

The Characters Of The Indigenous People In Mexico, By...
Cabeza de Vaca has an interest in depicting the indigenous people he encounters in a certain manner.
The perception that the indigenous people of the Americas were naturally subordinate, immoral, and
resourceful was vital to the Spanish colonial conquest. It allowed them to indulge in their quest for
empire under the guise of trying to bring the indigenous into their society. Truthfully, it was a way for
the Spanish to practice their racism and cruelty. Cabeza de Vaca subtly communicates a portrayal of
the indigenous that depicts them just as the Spanish empire wanted them to be, while at the same time
positioning himself as their superior, therefore solidifying Cabeza de Vaca as a leadership figure who s
experience in dealing with the indigenous and landscapes was invaluable to the Spanish s goals. The
passage begins with the words And to console them... , a phrase suggesting that Spanish presence in
the Americas is bringing great grief to the indigenous, due to how it is causing divides amongst the
indigenous, as well as how it creates a justification for the raiding that takes place through an
exchange. The Spanish and their allies receive the indigenous goods, while in return the get a measly
consolation of words, which in this case are supposed to be the most sound advice possible. It is
immediately followed by the robbers told them... , where Cabeza de Vaca has decided to forego

The Problem and Its Background
Language as a medium of teaching is one of the common factors in the teaching learning processes. In
terms of instructions, some learners fail to do such tasks due to misconception or misunderstanding.
Oftentimes, they were also inattentive in class interactions due to the teacher s use or choice of words
whenever he/she is explaining. In today s 21st century education, it is a fact that seventy percent of
class performance is given to the students while the remaining thirty percent is allotted to the teacher

Parental Neglect By Roald Dahl s Matilda And Neil Gaiman...
Child abuse, in any form, is cause for outrage. This makes the question of whether neglect, benign or
otherwise, is better than violence hard to consider. According to Canada s Public Health Agency,
parental neglect, at 34% of cases, is the most commonly reported form of child maltreatment (31). In
Roald Dahl s Matilda and Neil Gaiman s Coraline, parental neglect is contrasted against violence as
both are shown to be psychologically detrimental to a child, while the impact of these imperfect
parents is able to help a child redefine their sense of self.
The overt neglect of her prodigal intellect experienced by Matilda leaves her feeling misunderstood
and an outsider in her family which differs from the perceived neglect which leaves Coraline
struggling with her sense of self. Born to parents described as gormless (Dahl 4), Matilda is both
blessed and cursed with a prodigal intellect. Causing Matilda to crave knowledge, it is her intellect
that leads her at the age of four years and three months (9), to defy her parents and everyday walk to
the library. Matilda admits to this neglect to Mrs. Phelps, the librarian, when she tells her of her
mother, She doesn t encourage reading books. Nor does my father (10). With this statement Matilda
shows how her parents have neglected to foster her intellect. Matilda s eagerness to digest
information, and the fact that the only book in the Wormwood home is her mother s cookbook,
elaborates how she differs from her parents.

Now that I have gone through all of the cards I will go back through them all to make sure I don t have

realized that what was on the card I started reflecting it on my own life. For example, some of the
cards taking about cleaning the house and then I thought I need to it too. I started to agree with these
cards so that they made sense in my own life and that they were like my own thoughts. They then fit

rules to be able to make sense of the cards. I feel that the categories them self are different

groups that I already know about. The criteria of the assignment made it difficulty when think of
categories since we couldn t have no more than ten. I at first started out with a group called friends
then I did one of family and then realized I could have a broader category called people. I made a
strategy that any card that talked about a person or could have been said by a person would be grouped
together. Most of the cards could fit in a category called stocks of knowledge. Whenever I used
previous knowledge to make sense of the card is an example of this. The card that talked about David

hobby is soccer. If I didn t know he played soccer this card would have gone in the people category.

Monitoring the Glucose Level of Diabetic Patients
Monitoring of the glucose level of diabetic patients is a cornerstone of diabetes care and management.
The reliability of the home based glucose monitoring devices is critically important because the whole
self care and management of diabetes depends upon it. But there is still a big question mark on the
accuracy of the results of the glucose monitoring devices. The ability of currently marketed glucose
monitoring systems to determine the glycemic status of the patient is not very accurate. The glucose
monitors detect less accurately than the clinicians usually think. The need for the adjustment of the
treatment is greatest when the blood glucose level is in the hypoglycemic range and conversely this is
the range of glucose level where the accuracy of the glucose measuring devices falls to the lowest.
Various studies have demonstrated the poor performance of the home based glucose monitors in the
hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic range. None of the devices in the market fulfills the criteria of
accuracy set by American diabetes association and other authorities. Several studies have been done
regarding the statistical and clinical accuracy of the home based glucose meters when the blood
glucose level is in the hypoglycemic range, during the last two decades. Pohl et al. reported in a study
in 1985 that the home based glucose monitoring devices demonstrate poor accuracy when the blood
glucose level is in hypoglycemic range. The study demonstrated that the correlation coefficient

step. Growing up in a small town, and also growing up with guns my whole life I was one of those
people who did not want gun control laws. Then after reading two articles that discussed this topic I

reading each article and analyzing them, I found the Desuka essay to be a better composed essay for
several reasons. The first reason the Desuka essay is more effective than Cassidy is, because Desuka
tends to be more of a believable authority than does Cassidy. Cassidy at the time of the essay was the
NRA S ( National Rifle Association ) executive vise president. The NRA is the biggest advocate for
the right to bear arms. In his essay, Cassidy seems to be more involved in trying to sell memberships

Gestalt Therapy Essay
Gestalt Therapy
I. Summary and Integration of Major Concepts
Founded by Frederick (Fritz) and Laura Perls in the 1940 s, Gestalt therapy is a phenomenological
existential methodology which emphasizes experience and experimentation. Gestalt is a German term
that means a complete pattern or configuration (p. 112). Though there are many modalities and styles
in Gestalt therapy, it is holistic in its approach uniting mind, body, and feeling (p. 112). Some concepts
at the core of Gestalt therapy are the organism as a whole , emphasis on the here and now , and
awareness (pp. 223 225). Perls believed that human beings are unified organisms (p.223) and that

we (the class) began our first session in Gestalt I initially felt less nervous about participating, in fact,
I volunteered to be the first client in my group during the first demonstration. Just like client centered
therapy, I had again been in a group that was assigned to Dr. Fiebert and I felt fortunate to have him

through the reading and class lecture that this was a therapy that called for the therapist to be creative
in getting the client to express emotions and feelings. I was anxious to see what creative techniques
Dr. Fiebert would employ. He began the session by asking me what I was aware of and I told him that
I was feeling some tension in my neck and shoulders. He then asked me to describe the tension, rate
the level of tension on a scale of 1 10, increase the tension and relate it to and experience or incident

choice. People live a different kind of life, with different goals to reach, and what kind of life a person
may want to live. Religion has a profound effect on people s daily lives, and the areas it affects are
work life, family life, and the standards a person holds.
Work Life
It happens to everyone, people are at work (or school) and have a project due on Monday, but they see
the clock ticking closer and closer to 5pm, and have that urge to slip out a few mins early so they can
get ahead of schedule on ordering the wings and pizza and getting good movie tickets. The
consequence of doing this is the person having to choose whether to finish the project on Saturday,
Sunday, or if the person really wants to push it, Monday morning. So what option are you going to
take?
Work Smarter, Not Harder
Full time committed religious people know the regular weekend schedule. Saturday is the day to sleep
in, cook some good breakfast, and take the kids

Family s Roles And Functions, Childcare Practices, And...
Over time, nearly every aspect of American family life has gone through extensive transformations.
Just over the past three centuries there has been overwhelming changes in family s roles and functions,
childcare practices, and emotional dynamics. The definition of what is considered to be family has
changed due to shifts in social values, the economy, and health. Therefore, there isn t a set definition
for the traditional family because family life is a social and cultural construct.
Before the industrial era, family life was just a means of production. The family structure before the
1800 s of white middle class Americans consisted of a male as the head of the family, his wife, and his
children. Fathers were viewed as the owners of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, children were viewed in economic terms and families reared large numbers of children for
help with labor on the farm. Due to the lack of medicine and clean hygiene, the life expectancy of
people during this time was very low. It was common for families to lose a child from illness which is
why having many children was common. During these centuries children were regarded as adults at a
very young age and were expected to be involved in adult like behavior. Thus adults were less likely
to romanticize their children s childhood experiences. Additionally, privacy was limited within the
family due to the large numbers of members in a household. A common myth that people today
believe about family life from this era is that people were happier, they had fewer problems, and
families were stronger. We often hear the phrase, the good old days . Many of us cherish romantic
notions of what life was like in earlier times because we know so little about it. Family life in the good
old days was filled with many dangers, deprivation, illness, and disease. Not to mention family life
wasn t sentimentalized like it is today.
During the industrial revolution there increased an ongoing separation of home and work. As
employment moved from inside of the home to outside, a new kind of urban middle class family
began to develop. Farming was soon replaced

Observation At MADA
The amount of economically disadvantaged Jewish people has been consistently rising for years
within the Montreal community. With 18.5% of the community falling under the poverty line,
Montreal has the highest rate of Jewish poverty in Canada. MADA is an organization tasked with
lowering this number in the coming years and is close to the hearts of many, both clients and
volunteers alike. For example, Lauren Rubio has been dedicating her time to this facility for over ten
years and is one of many dedicated volunteers. MADA has two main goals, says Rubio. The first is to
help the Jewish poor: people living under the poverty line, immigrants... We deliver them food,
clothing, and furniture. The other is to help the lonely. As Rubio stated, MADA has an extremely ...

afford the items they need or those who, after emergency situations such as fires, are left without any

to distribute boxes to the poor containing the essential items, such as food and religious texts, that the
celebration of Shabbat, a weekly Jewish celebration, necessitates. Not only does it assist others from a
religious standpoint, but is also helpful from a social one. You can go in and talk to [the client] for a
two minutes, five minutes, depending on who it is. But a few minutes will change their lives, says
Rubio. Every year, there are more and more volunteers such as herself that participate in various

Compare And Contrast Hester And Dimmesdale
French poet Jean De La Fontaine once said, Nothing weighs on us so heavily as a secret does. Set in
the harsh Puritan community of seventeenth century Boston, Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet
Letter is a tale of a woman named Hester Prynne who is involved in an affair scandal. As a result she
is punished by the relentless society and is ordered to bear a scarlet A on her bosom for the remainder
of her life which stands for adulterer. However, the mystery as to who the father is of her newborn
baby, Pearl would remain a mystery for seven years. One of the town s most renowned figures, their
beloved minister Arthur Dimmesdale proves to be a true exhibit of Mr. Fontaine s saying since he is
the illicit lover of Hester and is Pearl s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hester s scarlet letter is a piece of clothing, the SCARLET LETTER, so fantastically embroidered and
illuminated upon her bosom (Hawthorn 51). Her interpretation of the extremity of her sins is one of
self composure and calm. She views her sins solely as a violation in the natural order of the
environment and therefore cannot even perceive her sin as being evil except through outside influence.
Dimmesdale on the other hand, has a scarlet letter carved in his chest. This is revealed when
Dimmesdale was giving his revelation, in which he tore away the ministerial band from before his
breast. It was revealed! (Hawthorn 232). Dimmesdale s personal interpretation as to the extremity of
his own sins is a violation of God s law, which is the law that he is totally dedicated to and supported
by. Dimmesdale s interpretation of his sin is much more severe than Hester s, it is a violation and
direct contradiction of his own self consciousness and physical existence. Therefore the appearance of
his A, even though it is never directly described in the novel, must be powerful, broken, and brutally
dishonest (...a ghastly rapture; Hawthorne pg.95). Since the Scarlet Letter on Hester is visible to the
public, she was criticized and looked down on. This women has brought shame upon us all, and ought
to die (Hawthorn 49) is said by a female in the marketplace talking about Hester. She becomes a
stronger person through living this hard life.

Popsicle Cross Bridge
During the Physics bridge project, teams were instructed to hypothesize and construct a Truss Bridge
from Popsicle sticks to learn valuable life and Physics lessons. One team, in particular, Physics
Abridged, may not have won but the team members have definitely learned more lessons any other
team. This team began its trek to greatness by conducting several hours of academic research. In fact,
the group had at least fifteen sources. In the first research phase, the team amassed ten sources;
however, Terence felt as if that was not enough, so he researched more in depth to understand the
Trusses that his team would be using. This resulted in what the group could label as some of the best
research ever conducted for the Bridge Project; however, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

lesson by yourself because the lesson was perplexing. The last option is seen in the Physics Bridge
project. Terence began without any knowledge of a truss but through bundles of research and
experimentation, he was able to understand. As stated before, everyone will go through a period in life
when they do not understand a topic. Therefore, they must take their education into their own hands
and they must apply themselves to the fullest of their capabilites until it comes to

Whale was one of the most important aquatic resources to used whale oil and other products. The

around Spitsbergen (Svalbard). After that, Entrepreneurs among English, Dutch, French, Basque, and
Danish developed a keen interest in a commercial whaling, and started to have made an expedition
and to have fished whale around the Arctic water. A sailor and a fisherman have voyaged and hunted
between the Spitsbergen (Svalbard) and the Davis Strait around Greenland. The English tried
voyaging and fishing for the first time around the area (1611), and followed by the Dutch (1612) and
other countries.
After 1612 Dutch whaling entrepreneurs suffered from the company. Dutch required the States
General to permission to establish whaling company. The States General have permitted to the
establishment of the Northern Company (Noordsche Compagnie) in 1614. The company had

A Rose For Emily And Psycho Analysis
Though A Rose for Emily and Psycho have two different plots, they have similar themes and
characteristics. Both stories have a murderous theme, with eerie abandoned looking houses. In both
Faulkner and Hitchcock s stories, the houses looked as is no one was taking care of them, but there
were still at least one person that came out of each one. Within the two houses were secrets
unimaginable to anyone outside of the home with a cloud of mystery hanging over them. This
comparison essay will cover the main characters, Ms. Emily Grierson in A Rose for Emily and
Norman in Psycho, who have similar themes of mystery, loneliness, and secrets. The mystery comes
from the lack of knowledge about what actually happens inside of the homes. Even though the town
was able to see Emily in town or later standing in her downstairs window, they did not know what was
going on in that house. Especially ever since she stopped her classes with the children. Norman also
did not have anyone looking inside his home. It was just him, his mother and no one else. Spectators
may call this sad, but to the ones that live in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With different plots and characters, both writers were able to capture the audience s attention with
secrets and murder. Faulkner s a Rose for Emily made the audience feel sorrow for Ms. Emily s losses,
even though she was the one that murdered Homer. She was only looking for someone to stay with
her. Hitchcock s Psycho made the audience fearful of Norman. In the town and to the guests at his
hotel he appeared to be a well rounded man, but what they did not know was that he was devastated
by his mother s death and to fill that void he became her, and was even able to kill an innocent woman
because he believed at that time he was his over protective mother. With character with loneliness and
a touch of psychotic breakdowns Faulkner and Hitchcock made life long classic

Odysseus As An Epic Hero
Lance Armstrong once said, Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or even a
year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts
forever . This quote resembles that one of the most important qualities of a hero is persevering through
rugged obstacles. As the quote refers to time, Odysseus s journey took 20 years to accomplish and
throughout it he faced many trials, showing how great heroes are made up of those trials in life.
Throughout the Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus journeys home to Ithaca and throughout the
journey, he gains qualities of an epic hero by facing and overcoming numerous challenges.
Odysseus shows he is an epic hero by persevering through his crews betrayal of him by the opening of
the sack of air from Aeolus. With home in sight and Odysseus sleeping, his men open the bag of wind
thinking that it contains gold and silver. The author explains, The bag of wind thus escapes and blows
the ship all the way back to Aeolus s island (Homer 10). Odysseus men betray him, by causing
Odysseus to navigate the crew all the way back to Ithaca again. Therefore, Odysseus men betray him
and go behind his back. He perseveres and sticks with them and starts the voyage again to return
home. He has to navigate to Ithaca all over again. Odysseus handles many major setbacks and huge
obstacles along his journey. For instance, when the laestrygonians hurl boulders at Odysseus ships

  • 4. The Nature Of Discovery In The Virgin Suicides By Sofia... Discovery is often provoked when the actions of others act as a catalyst, often stimulating personal growth. However, the ramifications are dependent on individual perceptions and the unique context they bring to the process. These ideas are amplified by Shakespeare s Jacobean romance The Tempest, with its array of characters who dramatise this instability through diverse human responses contrasting to the antagonizing nature of discovery. 1999 American drama film, The Virgin Suicides by Sofia Coppola, reflects the collective consciousness of a group reminiscing on past experiences and interactions, opening them to discover personal potential. This process acts as a catalyst for an evaluation of the impact of change, leading to new discoveries. In exploring composer s representations of discoveries, individuals learn the symbiotic relationships of new insights and their intrinsic value. Discoveries that are catalysed by unexpected an unprecedented human interaction, are often the most powerful and lead to immense personal growth. Thus understanding emerges through a range of dramatic forms and features within The Tempest, As the title suggests the work revolves around an extended metaphor, partly concerned with the forces of nature, evident from the very opening of the play as Prospero s elaborate scheme to inflict vengeance on his usurpers in a manner much like the chaotic nature of a storm or tempest. As such, Prospero s, lack of empathy and self awareness is reflected ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. William Golding´s Lord of the Flies and How Jack Changes... Lord of the Flies was written by William Golding in 1954. Golding s experience in the war had an effect on him and changed his views on humanity. His book was written to demonstrate just how naive the book The Coral Island was. Golding conveys how mankind deteriorates when one has no rules, order or morals. He shows no matter how young or what nationality one is, humans have an internal battle of right and wrong and that without virtues and principles all can go down the path of savagery even innocent children. The third person narrative that Golding uses lets the reader observe how the story develops. Jack is initially a responsible head strong boy who follows the rules that society had given him. Our first impression of the choir is that of an army. They were marching approximately in step. The use of word marching suggests a uniform military movement. Therefore the first sighting of the choir leaves a lasting impression of anonymity on the reader. This is conveyed when they are described as a creature . Ralph s group cannot see the choir so they are unknown and mysterious. Furthermore Jack is presented as an arrogant yet an authoritative character. In the sentence I ought to be chief because I m chapter chorister and head boy, Golding emphasises Jack s arrogance and ignorance as Jack believes that he is suitable for the role of chief due to his role in school which has no relevance. In addition, Jack is also spiteful and cruel towards Piggy. This is conveyed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Effects Of Coal Ash On The Health Of Water Systems Introduction Coal ash is a byproduct of burning coal in power plants and is composed mainly of aluminum and silicon oxides. This ash is commonly stored away in dump sites, only to leach out solutions of concentrated toxic heavy metals. Such issues are detrimental to the health of water systems, posing both a human and environmental health risk. However, there are solutions to this problem. Coal ash possesses unique chemical properties that allow for the remediation of other environmental concerns, such as the treatment of soil polluted with heavy metals, the removal of nutrients from wastewater, and the remediation of acid mine drainage in streams. Coal ash is known to contain a number of different toxic metals, the exact content dependent upon the coal it is formed from. Containing this potential pollution hazard is an expensive problem, as approximately 75% of all ash generated is stored in landfills. In these sites, rainwater can leach out toxic metals including mercury, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, molybdenum, lead and selenium. As over 500 million tons of ash are produced each year, there s an increasing environmental health hazard to the surrounding water systems of these landfills. Pollution can spread to municipal water systems and potentially poison humans. As such, figuring out a better solution to deal with the unused coal ash is of significant importance. Current uses of coal ash primarily include the formation of concrete due the pozzolanic properties of coal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This shows that Helena isn t just a jealous friend, but a hurt girl with low self esteem; she is desperate to have love and happiness again to extent of giving Demetrius what he wants at the expense of her friends wellbeing. Despite the late hours, dangers of the night, and Demetrius annoyance with her, Hermia expresses her desperation and relentless love for him by proclaiming ...you [Demetrius] draw me, you hard hearted adamant , I love you the more , and ... spurn me, strike me...only give me leave... to follow you . Humorously enough, even when Demetrius does not grant Helena permission, she still devotedly follows him. Due to the constant flow of insults and abuses from Demetrius, Helena s character is pushed to the point where she wallows in self pity and despair as well as further compare her darker, less attractive complexion to Hermia s. When Lysander awakens under a love spell and professes his undying love for her, she runs away in distress believing he is implementing a cruel joke on her. When Demetrius follows in the same love struck manner, she becomes exasperated and falls further into her self pity. • 20. The Importance Of Social Deviance Deviance is a concept that sociologists tend to struggle coming up with one widely accepted definition for. It is a concept that impacts everyone in a given society, either directly or indirectly, and is generally defined as Variation from a set of norms or shared social expectations. (Laurence Basirico, Barbara Cashion, J. Ross Eshleman 2014:195) Society often views social deviance as a negative thing that disrupts that natural order and guidelines of a society, but it also has many positive functions to it. Society can help, define the limits of social tolerance , Increase the solidarity and integration of a group , Serve as a safety valve for social discontent , and indicate defects of inadequacies in the existing social organization. (Basirico, 2014:195). All of these positive functions of a deviant behavior tend to lead towards positive change in a society that although may serve as a culture shock to the society at first, such as equality for LGBT groups, it will eventually become beneficial to the society and make it a healthier and more sustainable one. Without deviant behavior, the society becomes stagnant and will die, much like a living organism s cells becoming stagnant, and the organism dying. Although social deviance can bring productive change to a society, it is still important to understand that it can lead to dysfunctions and be harmful to the society, as well as the people within it. Dysfunctions of society can be things such as, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 21. Summary In The Lottery By Martin Niemoller What do you think Then Lottery by Shirley Jackson means? I could bet some money that you are wrong. What about First they came by Martin Niemoller, you know what that means? The plot in The Lottery is, that you should speak up even if it s the wrong thing to do. The plot in First They Came is, justice indifference Martin Niemoller. The three claims I have are justice indifference, standing up may not be the easiest, following the crowd (peer pressure). Now, the claim is talking about justice indifference. The justice indifference in The Lottery First they came are similar yet different in its own ways. This is how. In the lottery their justice is the town s lottery they have a yearly lottery but it s not what you are thinking (most likely) it s not that you win money, it s that you win rocks. You ask how? Why? What do you mean by rocks? Well the answers to that is, how? They don t do money but rocks and what so they do with the rocks? They throw them at you, why thought? Because it s their towns tradition. The indifference in the Lottery is that you expect yourself or someone else to win money not rocks thrown at you to your death. Now the justice in First they came is that he/she was not helping others and the justice in that was that he/she got no one to help them out. The indifference is that you expect someone or anyone to help you out in the time in need but you have to do something in return. In both of these stories you expect something else then what you really got. What do you think of when someone says standing up ? Do you think it is an easy thing to do or hard or a little bit of both? We all have different answers but let s just say it s not ALWAYS the easiest thing to do. In the Lottery Tessie is the one to stand up but it s not easy because she is by herself. No one is on her side. She tries to stick up for herself bur that was the first time she stuck up for the lottery she never stuck up of anyone else so who do you know would help her out right now. Same goes for first they came . The Nazis are going after Jews but this person is not a Jew so they don t worry about it so they don t stick up for the Jews being taken away. B2b Exchanges And Business Activity Perspective Business to business (B2B) exchanges or marketplaces provide dramatic opportunities to automate collaborative business processes with customers and suppliers, generate internal efficiencies, and reach new markets at minimal cost. The key differentiating attributes of the B2B Exchanges from the Business to Consumer (B2C) exchanges are: the target customers (Business customers such as Resellers, Industrial market, etc.); the nature of demand which is derived based on consumer demand; and the exchange process which are more formal in nature (more purchase ... • 24. Analysis Of David Hanson s Carnage And Culture Essay Question2: In Carnage and Culture, Victor David Hanson expressed a slanted perspective about the crucial battles in western history in order to support his theory that western militaristic strategies are superior to alternative forms of warfare. He fostered his sentiments by explaining how specific battle tactics can unify or divide a nation in a matter of moments. However, his reference to the concept that western warriors continuously triumph in war, is expressed in a manner that does not fully evaluate both perspectives of the conflict. Hanson alluded to his message behind Carnage and Culture in his thesis: A sense of personal freedom, superior discipline, matchless weapons, egalitarian camaraderie, individual initiative, constant tactical adaptations, and flexibility, preference for shock battle of heavy infantry were themselves the murderous dividend of Hellenic culture at large ... Yet for the past 2,500 years even in the Dark Ages, well before the Military Revolution, and not simply as a result of the Renaissance, the European discovery of the Americas, or the Industrial Revolution there has been a peculiar practice of Western warfare, a common foundation and continual way of fighting, that has made Europeans the most deadly soldiers the history of civilizations. In most cases OCD is treated through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, exposure and response prevention, and/or with the use of medications. Exposure is repeatedly exposing the subject to a trigger of obsession. If a person is afraid of getting sick, they would expose themselves by sitting in a hospital. Response prevention is asking the patient to refuse contributing to their compulsive behavior. The behavior they perform is to reduce rising anxiety levels, but while participating in ERP the patient will experience levels of anxiety while facing the fear. In the hospital situation, the patient would have to refuse leaving or excessive handwashing. Since OCD habits are usually created out of anxiety or distress the use of anti anxiety medications are commonly used to suppress anxiety. Without the anxiety, the need for a compulsive behavior is not as strong. Cognitive treatment was formed to redirect misrepresented cognitions that might persist having not been considered or dealt with while under behavioral treatment (Whittal, Thordarson, McLean, 2004, p. 1560). Both published in 1925, the time when the jazz age at it s peak, The great Gatsby by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald and Soldier s Home by Ernest Hemingway depict the fragmentation of the soared society by narrating the experience of characters. Soldiers Home and The Great Gatsby show some aspect of the society at their time, though not as a major intent of the books, and we can see how the trend of the society influenced people. Both pieces of work have settings in the same time period, 1920s, but slightly different interval. In Soldier s Home, Krebs returned to his hometown about one year after the war. The perception that the indigenous people of the Americas were naturally subordinate, immoral, and resourceful was vital to the Spanish colonial conquest. • 34. Parental Neglect By Roald Dahl s Matilda And Neil Gaiman... Child abuse, in any form, is cause for outrage. This makes the question of whether neglect, benign or otherwise, is better than violence hard to consider. According to Canada s Public Health Agency, parental neglect, at 34% of cases, is the most commonly reported form of child maltreatment (31). In Roald Dahl s Matilda and Neil Gaiman s Coraline, parental neglect is contrasted against violence as both are shown to be psychologically detrimental to a child, while the impact of these imperfect parents is able to help a child redefine their sense of self. The overt neglect of her prodigal intellect experienced by Matilda leaves her feeling misunderstood and an outsider in her family which differs from the perceived neglect which leaves Coraline struggling with her sense of self. Born to parents described as gormless (Dahl 4), Matilda is both blessed and cursed with a prodigal intellect. Causing Matilda to crave knowledge, it is her intellect that leads her at the age of four years and three months (9), to defy her parents and everyday walk to the library. Matilda admits to this neglect to Mrs. Phelps, the librarian, when she tells her of her mother, She doesn t encourage reading books. Nor does my father (10). Due to the lack of medicine and clean hygiene, the life expectancy of people during this time was very low. It was common for families to lose a child from illness which is why having many children was common. During these centuries children were regarded as adults at a very young age and were expected to be involved in adult like behavior. Thus adults were less likely to romanticize their children s childhood experiences. Additionally, privacy was limited within the family due to the large numbers of members in a household. A common myth that people today believe about family life from this era is that people were happier, they had fewer problems, and families were stronger. We often hear the phrase, the good old days . Many of us cherish romantic notions of what life was like in earlier times because we know so little about it.
