PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Morningstar Oct 2015 – Feb 2016
Served as a senior unix admin while the team transitioned from one physical locality to
another.
Rush University Medical Center Mar 2008 – Oct 2015
A nonprofit, academic medical centerencompassing a hospital serving adultsand children. In addition to
having one of the nation’stop-ranked nursing colleges,Rush University also providesgraduate programs
in allied health, health systems management and biomedical research.
Instituted procedures for regular system evaluation and updates in a culture that valued
end-user image over system security or system maintenance. This includes:
Greatly streamlining and cleaning the jumpstart environment for building Solaris
servers
Implementing a patching program to regularly patch all supported Sun Solaris and
RedHat Linux systems. Most servers were not patched prior to my implementation
of a regular patching schedule.
Configuring and enabling IPFilters on Sun Servers and configuring IPtables on Linux
servers.
Added system hardening tools and practices to both Sun and Linux servers directly
tailored to SOX and HIPPA audit requirements. My system check shell script, which
has been tested on Solaris 7-10, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3–6, and AIX 6.1 checks
over 200 system settings at this point.
Wrote and implemented monitoring scripts to augment and in some cases replace
the existing monitoring software.
Aided in rebuilding the entire swatch system used to monitor all unix servers.
Used Virtualization in the VMWare environment.
Using Veritas Netbackup v 7.x to administer backups of windows, unix (Solaris, AIX,
and Linux) and VMS servers.
On call 7x24.
American Bar Association Dec 2007 –
Feb 2008
Voluntaryprofessionalorganization representingofthelegalprofession,servingthepublicand the
professionbypromotingjustice,professionalexcellenceandrespectforthe law.
ProvidedSun Solaris and Red Hat linux expertise and knowledge fora short-term consulting
assignment with the unix administrator team. During that time, I incorporated my fixup script into
the ABA environment, fixed several security issues, and wrote scripts to address issues unique to
their environment. I provided tools to automate regular web server, mail, and virus log rotation,
compression, and expiration. I authored scripts to automate regular system status reporting as
well as a method to greatly decrease the time needed forsystem patching. I documented heavily all
of my workso that the ABA can continue to benefit frommy improvements and innovations long
after my tenure there was over.

Lead Security Systems Administrator (2002 – 2007)
Senior Systems Administrator (1998 – 2002)
Primary responsibility for the administration of the infrastructure servers for the Chicago Board of
Trade including: website, DNS Servers, NTP Servers, mail servers, LDAP and UIM authentication
servers, anonymous ftp site, and their associated test, development, and QA environments.
On call 7x24 for any system issue.
Quickly, efficiently, and securely built any server for any use utilizing Flash Archive (FLAR)
or from installation media.
Maintained mission-critical infrastructure applications and their underlying servers such as
the Domain Name Service (DNS), sendmail environment, and the NTP environment.
Wrote and maintained a system fixup script to verify over 150 OS settings for a server,
resulting in faster and more widespread adherence to the Chicago Board of Trade’s security
policy. The script was also designed to correct any changed settings as a result of OS or
application modification. Automated the running of this script so that managers could
quickly ascertain the status their servers.
Developed scripts to modify the patching tools provided by Sun Microsystems for the more
security-conscious environment of a financial institution. This action resulted in a higher
security environment. Scripted much of this work so that it would be done automatically,
saving time and resources. Scheduled installation to minimize or eliminate any disruption
in service.
Customized OpenSSH (with the most recent version of OpenSSL) to meet the higher
security requirements of Chicago Board of Trade. In addition, configured the install image
to make it simpler for other admins to install on their systems
Implemented several Foundry (hardware) and Veritas clusters for mission critical
applications.
Developed scripts to summarize security and audit reports from Tripwire software for
higher management to determine the status of an individual or a group of servers.
Wrote many scripts to automate administration of our DNS environment, including
building separate databases for remote environments and automatically propagating those
changes hourly. Functioned as the sole DNS administrator for well over ten years.
Maintained the servers for the company website for over ten years with no unplanned
downtime to the service.
Designed the NTP environment for optimum time resolution and maintained that
environments as servers were added and removed.

electronic trading system. Applied system and application patches and updates with no
downtime of service.
