This document compares the total costs of responsive and efficient supply chain policies using a theoretical inventory model calculation and actual cost data. The efficient policy results in a total cost that is very close to the theoretical calculation, while the responsive policy has a lower total cost due to assumptions that orders are fulfilled instantly without lead times. The efficient policy calculation accounts for lead times and delays in ordering and carrying costs, while the responsive policy resembles a just-in-time kanban system without such obstacles.
