Respiration involves the breakdown of food substances to release energy through oxidation reactions. There are two main types - aerobic respiration which occurs in the presence of oxygen and releases more energy, and anaerobic respiration which occurs without oxygen and releases less energy. Respiration allows organisms to obtain energy stored in food which is required for cellular processes and life. The human respiratory system involves breathing mechanisms and gas exchange in the lungs to take in oxygen and remove carbon dioxide through diffusion.
